Tweekums Paul Maguire used to be a dangerous criminal but he has been going straight for many years... then one day his daughter is kidnapped. Either those who did it have no idea who they are messing with or his past is coming back to haunt him. Fearing the latter he gets together with a couple of friends from the old days and starts asking questions. Then her body is found with a bullet from a Soviet Tokarev pistol in her head. He had crossed paths with members of the Russian Mafia before but this time he is going to war. The body count rapidly rises but nobody will admit to knowing anything about his daughter's death. It must be admitted that this film has some obvious flaws; most notably certain details about the weapon which when revealed make one wonder why nobody thought about it earlier... it is impossible to go into too much detail about this as that would spoil the film. There is plenty of action, some of it is fairly brutal, often meted out by the 'good guys'. This action is pretty exciting and should satisfy fans of the genre. Nicolas Cage is pretty solid as Maguire even if he does get a little over the top when he confronts those he feels are responsible for his daughter's death. The rest of the cast were pretty good although I was somewhat surprised to see Danny Glover playing a police officer... wasn't he 'too old for this stuff' back in the 1980s?! Overall I'd say this is fun if you can overlook certain details.
billchristen I'm not sure what's worse....Cage's hair dye, the wife that looks younger than the daughter or the tired plot. I'm now just using it as background noise while I write this review. If this was the only movie available to watch, I would probably schedule a dentist appointment to have a root canal done instead of watching this again. I like many movies that Nick Cage has done, and I will watch those. When I saw Danny Glover, I was really thinking that Mel Gibson may show up. More disappointment.
Floated2 Rage (2014) starring Nicolas Cage is another film in the recent catalog of Nic Cage where his film qualities have seemed to taken a hit. In the film, we see Cage in another film where he plays the same typical character of a hit-man or mob leader making anger expressions. Many of them are quite bad. But they're usually bad in an over-the-top or ridiculous way- they're rarely boring. This one is. It could have used a bit more of crazy Cage, and I believe the film swindles too much in the middle. A lot of predictability and nothing happening but a simple plot. The action is typical, very few between each scene and the acting isn't great. The standard of this film has a lot to do with Taken which seems like a direct lower in quality. The director also tries a twist at the ending, thinking with that in mind that it would make the film better (perhaps a little) but in general, it was too late and the film hadn't been that great either way. After watching the film, we all can see why this did not get a typical US theater release. ============================================================= As a rewatch (03/22/18'), the film is more engaging and interesting than initial lead to believe. It is a poorer version of Taken with less suspense, thrills and overall quality of a script but Rage remained enjoyable in some ways. Better than some of Nicolas Cage's more recent action thrillers. With a second viewing, the twist ending felt more predictable and obvious. Rating changed from 2 to 5. Worth a second viewing, though don't expect too much.
PepperPotts91 OK it's not the best action film your ever going to watch but I thought it was an awesome film with a great storyline!!! Don't understand all the terrible reviews and the comparisons to taken as it is completely different. A bad action film to me is a film that just tries to pack as much violence and fighting in as they can without any substance and this film wasn't that. It had substance and kept you guessing. I read the reviews before I watched it and decided to watch it anyway and I'm glad I did. Nicholas Cage is just as good as he usually is in all his other films. Enjoyed it all the way through and didn't find it boring at all! Don't let the reviews put you off...watch it!
