hoytyhoyty Yet another ranting anti-immortality film. A primitive story, based on stupid social biases derived from idiot religions. Write. Something. New. I wish, I wish, they would restrict the Arts qualifications people to just making the film look and sound good. And leave the writing to somebody with a brain and - particularly with SF - a knowledge of the sciences.Graphically, Renaissance is very impressive. Though, it becomes somewhat *Oppressive* after a while. The B&W is harsh. The voice characterisations are all excellent - it took me a little while to recognise Daniel Craig's voice. But, the whole thing is way, way too long. Suitable for a 40 minute special, but not a feature over one and a half hours long.- -- ---
Jordache Wee Renaissance is not your typical animation. A simple black and white like Sin City with specific bright colors for a specific item. A combination of The Matrix animation + Sin City + A Scanner Darkly makes the film interesting. Excellent dark and bloody plot too.According to Wikipedia, the producers used motion capture and computer graphics to create the film's unique look. The cast performed their scenes in motion-capture suits in front of a blue screen. Computer animators translated these animations to digital models used for the characters. The animated characters were placed in three-dimensional computer backdrops, with post-process effects added to achieve the film's final look.French automaker Citroën designed a car specially for the film, imagining what a Citroën might look like in 2054.The film cost 14 million € to make over six years. It was funded by Disney with 3 million USD provided from Miramax. The year is 2054, Ilona Tasuiev (Viriginie Mery/Romola Garai), a young female scientist who worked for a megalomaniac corporation called Avalon was kidnapped. Thus, Avalon corporation puts pressure on Barthélémy Karas (Patrick Floersheim/Daniel Craig)- a policeman who specialized in abductions, to find her alive as soon as possible.Karas is a moody and violent police specializing in kidnapping cases shows a boundless selflessness and also to the extend of which he sometimes breaking the police code. The key to his obsession with finding missing people lies mysterious somewhere in his past. And he is the only person who is in charge of finding Ilona's whereabouts. However, the mission gets more dangerous and important when other people tries to get to her first.Ilona is an intelligent young woman is involved in a conspiracy where she has found the secret to immortality.Karas recalls a conversation with Dr. Jonas Muller (Marc Cassot/Ian Holm) and Dr. Nakata (Robert Watson Barr) on the mistake they made when he found how the disappearance of the young children is somehow related to the secret project for immortality known as "The Renaissance Protocol".
Marc Colten My problems with this film fall into several categories.1. It's another reason why the French should not make Science Fiction - i.e."Fantastic Planet", "The Fifth Element", "Le Jetee" (interesting but like your uncle's slide shows if your uncle hallucinates)2. Why is this movie animated - same question as "A Scanner Darkly" and "Sin City". There really wasn't anything in it that couldn't be done in a non-animated film.3. Why wasn't it better animated - same question as "Sin City". If they were going to animate it - could we do it without eye strain?4. Why bother with spoiler alerts since it was so incomprehensible as to make any spoilers more like explanations? People come and go, events happen, but it made no real sense. I clicked on spoiler alert so - why the big deal with the stolen car? Why the whole - "You're out of control so we'll help the bad guys and suspend you" - the film takes place in 2054 and the plot is out of a film from the 1940's. Sorry just not a good film.
Cinemibus For all its visual delights, how much better Renaissance would have been in live action. The animation is fantastic in the big picture, yes, but the characters are cold and hollow, much like the story and the style of this film. With real actors, perhaps the world of the film would not have felt so lifeless. There is much to admire here, but at the end I found that all I could do was admire. I did not enjoy the movie that much, and it clarifies something that I did not see before: that the visual elements can be the defining positive aspect of a film, but without a good story and strong characters, it can all be for nothing. I will not go so far as to say that this movie comes to nothing, but sometimes it comes dangerously close. I love Dark sci-fi thrillers. Blade Runner and Dark City are two films I thought were wonderful. But Blade Runner had its tragic villain and Dark City had its thought-provoking story arc. Renaissance has shadow and light, but little else. I wish I could have liked this movie more, but the weak story and the empty characters stood in the way of that. The Renaissance was a historical and artistic burst of color and life. How ironic, then, that one of the most bleak and lifeless movies I've seen this year takes its title from the Renaissance.
