I said at the end of the fourth chapter in the 'Resident Evil' series that writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson needed to do something different and fresh with the next two additions. Based on what I saw in 'Resident Evil: Retribution' I think he knew he had to as well, he just didn't know how to do it. This one is the most unique of the first five films, however that doesn't necessarily equate to quality. In fact if anything it ended up making things even more bland than before. The acting in this one was noticeably worse than any other entry in the series. There were some truly horribly delivered lines at times. Milla Jovovich on the other hand continues to be a bright light in the series. She does what she does well. She's likable and pulls of the "badass" tag very well. 'Resident Evil: Retribution' is almost certainly the worst entry in the series to date. This film is living proof that this set of films has outstayed its welcome. If you're not adding something to story each time then why are you continuing to the make the films, other than for money? There is still one more film to go, 'The Final Chapter' which I plan to see this week. I can only hope that the series goes out on a high note, and maybe achieves some originality and freshness. Based on this entry though, I'm not going to get my hopes up.

*****I would actually give this a 6.25 (I gave Afterlife a 6.0) but IMDb won't let me!***** If you read my review for RE: Afterlife, you'll recall i said the movie continued off of the previous BUT only for the opening scene; same with this one! The opening scene of this one was a more fleshed-out version of the scene where Umbrella osprey-looking ships come to the "Arcadia" (only difference now, is it shows Alice and the gang ATTEMPT to fight them off. Then, Alice wakes up back in Raccoon city and dies trying to escape. You find out there are still Alice clones and places like Raccoon City (2'nd movie), Tokyo (4'th movie) and the Mansion (1'st movie) are all simulations. These simulations, and clones make it really hard to tell what's real and what isn't throughout the course of the movie. All in all it just comes across as really confusing. I'd say it was a better story than the previous movie, just executed poorly (hence the .25 better score). The end of the movie pretty much makes sense; solid enough to not make more if it bombs too bad, but open enough for a sequel if possible (which luckily there was...and it was AMAZING!) FINAL VERDICT: Like I said, the idea for the story was good and definitely better than RE: Afterlife, but it could've been a LOT better! ON THE BRIGHT SIDE: RESIDENT EVIL: THE FINAL CHAPTER!

The Resident Evil series jumped the shark with Afterlife and I thought Retribution would be just that: retribution. I thought they'd use this movie as a means of making amends, righting the wrongs, correcting the blunders and all that good stuff. Instead they laid another egg. Again the acting was poor, the story half-brained and the fight sequences putrid. There was nothing redeeming about exposed gun fights with high powered automatic weapons yielding no target hits (besides the faceless goons), or the slow motion, bordering paranormal fight sequences that were horribly choreographed and terribly executed. And is it too much to show someone actually running when they're running? You know: arms moving, head bobbing, face contorted with heavy breathing and other known characteristics associated with running. Instead we get glamour running. Hair neatly flowing in the wind, face at ease and arms and legs moving symmetrically all in slo-mo. This movie did nothing to atone for Afterlife. This was no retribution.

The only reason I saw RE: Retribution is because I have watched the 3 previously made ones and so why not catch up with the rest. I'm glad I saw this at home on my computer than in theatre. It was what I expected anyway - an escapist movie with enough Milla Jovovich action to last my coffee & popcorn. If I were in a theatre, I'd have had huge expectations and left possibly annoyed. But at home, it's just a way to relax and be entertained for a while - which Retribution did. Decent visual effects, fair amount of kicks & shoot outs and also I get to see my favs, Milla(still gorgeous) & Michelle Rodriguez(lovely). Michelle, no doubt, got a poor role but I'm glad I gotta see her anyway. If you wanna see it, just relax, forget logic and yes, grab something to bite! It isn't bad especially when you have your drink or coffee around and a bag of chips -p
