lwalker-04596 Denzel is such a great actor who has the ability to make every character emphatic. This movie is no different. A real study of character and the overall justice system!
Isle1970 And sometimes so do movies. I can forgive the flaws though, because the message, the acting, and the call to action the film inspires are more than worthy of watching.I gave it a 10 to counter the people unjustly giving it 1 or 2 stars, but I would rate it a 9 otherwise. There were a couple of script choices I would have liked tightened up a bit, or made more obviously relevant to the scene. There were some characters that could have been a bit more fleshed out. But the beauty of being the director is that you get to tell your story, your way. I can respect that, and I didn't let those things distract from the underlying story.Denzel was phenomenal, and Colin Farrel was very good as well. It was so interesting watching the parallel of their existential journeys, and witnessing the truth that we can simultaneously be an inspiration to others while privately losing our own way. To know that even if the mighty fall, there is always something redemptive we can and should do. That forgiveness, and self-forgiveness heals the soul. Unlike other reviews, I didn't mind the ending. It left me wanting more, at first. But I watched that final scene one more time, and I had an epiphany: WE are the rest of the story. Colin's character is all of us. We are left facing the clerk of court, because WE are the change we seek. And there are many whose shoulders we can stand on to do so. Many whose work remains unfinished unless we pick it up and finish it.This movie has an indie vibe in that not every single thing is spelled out for you, but it also has excellent cinematography, excellent acting from all - but especially the 3 main characters, but most importantly, this film gently knocks on your internal convictions and sense of self. I do highly recommend this movie for the deep thinkers out there. If you're more into action/adventure/comedy, this is not the Denzel movie for you.
justin-fencsak This film is so underrated. Denzel Washington plays the main character of the movie, a criminal defense lawyer. When the film premiered, some footage was cut for timing reasons, which can be seen on the dvd. It didn't do well at the box office due to minimal promotion yet it's finding new life on home media. Go see it.
ianenderby I was admittedly skeptical about this film when I sat down to watch it. Being, like many, a pretty big fan of much of Denzel Washington's work I wanted to like it, but I just had a bad feeling. I pulled up the movie on IMDb before starting it and was very pleased to be reminded that this was Dan Gilroy's latest project. I am a really big fan of many of the films he has written and Nightcrawler (his most recent film and directorial debut) is one of the most critically under appreciated masterpieces I've seen in years. So with my spirits, and expectations, lifted I pushed play. The opening scene grabbed my attention right away and I was excited to see where things would go. Unfortunately the film lost steam pretty quickly and struggled to find solid ground for the first 40 minutes or so. I was disheartened as I thought I would be writing my second review in a row of a disappointing film by one of my most respected creators.Thankfully things turned around and began to engage both the heart and mind as the titular characters journey, so excellently conveyed by both writer and actor, became more twisted and honest. Real emotion was achieved as I felt both excited, afraid and ultimately relieved for Roman as he wrestled through his inner battles. From a technical perspective, I thoroughly enjoyed many of the visual style Mr. Gilroy employed as well as his use of music and score. Both lent themselves well to depicting an almost timeless version of both Roman and the city of Los Angeles. As for the writing, I was particularly grateful for his decision not to overly emphasize some of the more commonly highlighted civil issues at play in this story, but rather spend time focusing on the deeper issues at play in all of us. The ones that I believe truly lie at the root of so many of the issues we all face as human beings. All in all I would recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys stories about justice and all of the tensions created by our pursuit of it. It is well told and Denzel's performance is certainly in keeping with the high regard that I (and many others) hold him in.
