Suman Shakya As mentioned in the credits, the film is inspired from "The Godfather" and is Indianized in the setting of a gangster family. Well, it's not really the gangster family, but the head of the family is above the police or government and rules the whole Mumbai. The focus here isn't very sharp whether the story is on patronizing a mafia family or the conspiracies between different gangs. The work or the income of the family also appears unclear. The whole film runs in a tension, and is very hard to keep on watching it. Despite this, the film is directed very well; and has few good performances. Amitabh Bachchan, in the tile role, performs and gives a dynamic screen presence with minimal dialogues. Abhishek Bachchan too appears calm and suites as a devoted son of a gang leader. All in all both have relived the powerful performances given by Marlon Brando or Al Pacino in "The Godfather." As a whole, the film sets a different genre, plays with a conviction, and is greatly performed. Due to lacking entertainment values and its slow pace, the film unfortunately didn't get much absorbed by the viewers.Rating: 2 stars out of 4
silvan-desouza Godfather is one of the known Hollywood films, several times inspired by Indian filmmakers, be it Aathank Hi Athank or several films. RGV was a quality name those days SARKAR also was the second film bringing BIG B and Small B together after Bunty Aur Babli released just few weeks from this film. The film is set in Mumbai The first half is more on establishing the characters, the sequence at the start when Raju Kale attacks the goons is superb while the spat at the dining table is awesome, Till the interval except the romance angle the film keeps you involved. The second half gets more intense though the culmination of some characters does get filmy, yet the culmination of Zakir is brilliant. One problem with the fim is it's excessive usage of background music and extreme close ups and technical wizadry which became a norm in most RGV films.Direction by RGV is good Background Music is good in parts but overall too muchAmitabh Bachchan is restrained in his role and performs it brilliantly Abhishek Bachchan is good in his part though he reminds of Big B a lot. Tanisha is okay in a brief role, Katrina Kaif made her comeback after disastrous BOOM and she had no takers those days, she is okay here Her dubbing was done by Mona Ghosh Shetty who did her dubbing in most other films. Kaykay is simply outstanding in his role, Supriya Pathak is good too Zakir Hussain is perfect, Ishrat Ali, Deepak Shirke, Kota Srinivasa Rao and others are all good, Ruksar is okay
zubair3001 Every time i look back at this film i never see Amitabh Bachchan as Amitabh Bachchan, i always see him as Subash Nagre the 'Sarkar'. That's how captivating Big Bs performance is. This has loads of similarities to Godfather but who said it didn't. RGV said he had been 'inspired' by it. Facial expressions make this film, there is very little said by Sarkar but his expressions tells the story. As for Abishek, being father and son in reel life only made the film sweeter. He gives a great performance from being a normal person to going on to help his father. One person that also deserves a lot of credit is Kay-Kay, his role as the 'unloved' son that turns bad you could say, was portrayed masterfully. I give this film 10/10 because of how everything fits so beautifully, the scenery is black and white mostly giving it a drowsy feel while the soundtrack heightens as more tension is built, the direction by RGV is top class, every camera angle, every word, every expression is taken into account. And finally the performances alone deserve full marks, every person even with the small roles such as the Sarkar's right hand man put everything into it. Truly a great film.
umairali01 when i saw the trailer of this movie, i though it would be an outstanding movie. excellent plot, excellent direction, but what stopped this movie from being an outstanding movie is, i am afraid AMITABH. the great actor raj kumar said one'' i do not consider amitabh even a good actor'' how truth full was he. from an angry man, he has turned into an ''angry old man'' in this movie. would any one compare this performance to say kamal hassan's nayagan or nana patekar's tabrez alam? i am afraid not. don't take me wrong, good entertainment, however, even though i am a big fan of his....he is limited to what he can bring to a movie like this, i couldn't help thinking would any one else had done more justice to this role. i cant even imagine him as the new GABBAR SINGH. i am just hoping he comes out with something different, other wise amjad khan would be turning in his grave............
