Leofwine_draca An exciting, if superficial, slice of adventure from 1970, and in a classic contemporary '60s fashion - witness the numerous disco scenes if you need any proof of this. The film was widely advertised as bringing together the three top names in horror - Peter Cushing, Vincent Price, and Christopher Lee, but the campaign was something of a fabrication, seeing as Cushing only appeared in a tiny, one-scene role, and Price and Lee only shared one brief scene together. However, that doesn't detract from the film at all - it's a very entertaining romp, with lots of reasons to watch. One of which is the '60s ambiance, the fashions, jazz music, and everything are all very dated and therefore fun to watch.Unfortunately, the story itself is very confusing and doesn't make much sense. The location of the pseudo-Nazi organisation is never specified (is it in this country or what?) and who works for who and why is never fully explained. However there are a number of great scenes to watch this film for. The first is the opening, where a jogger loses his leg (and the rest of his limbs throughout the film) to provide Price with his necessary materials for his research. Also, halfway through the film there is an excellent long chase scene, which starts off by car, becomes a chase through a deserted building, then through a quarry. The suspect rips off his own hand and jumps into an acid bath, how cool is that? Witness the policeman who dips his hand into the acid overact amusingly "My hand! It burns!".This film is a lot of fun because it seems like nobody is really taking it seriously, especially Price who obviously has his tongue firmly inside his cheek here, he looks as if he's enjoying the mad scientist role a lot though and camps it up hilariously. Cushing and Lee don't have much to do, but Cushing does play the role of an army commander very well, while Lee looks dapper in his hat and with his umbrella. The blond-haired hero is played by Christopher Matthews, whom you may remember from THE SCARS OF Dracula (then again, maybe not...), and his acting is woodenly faultless. It's also fun to spot a lot of other actors in minor roles, from Peter Sallis to Yutte Stensgaard. The rest of the cast is also good, especially Alfred Marks as the superintendent, portraying his policeman in that essential early '70s fashion (makes jokes, harsh with his staff, dedicated to his role). This is an enjoyable British film with a hammy (what else?) performance from Vincent Price and a lot of action. Prudists beware, there is an awful lot of nudity in this film, which is somewhat surprising, but 1970 was the year when things began to become less stringent. If you're feeling down then watch this film, it's guaranteed to cheer you up. A minor classic.
Boba_Fett1138 This is a movie starring horror icons Christopher Lee, Vincent Price and Peter Cushing but yet it is still a movie only a handful of people know off and have actually seen. There really is a very simple explanation for that; the movie just really isn't that good. The main and biggest problem I had with this movie was that for 75% you have absolutely no idea what is going on and what its mystery is all supposed to be about. It's all being told so vaguely and loosely that you simply start to give up to try and make sense of it all. It's of course fine for a movie to be mysterious but they should at least had given the audience something and should have had explained certain things far earlier in the movie. Now, when the big 'twists' comes you just don't care about it anymore because everything that came before it was told in such a terribly non-engaging and uninteresting way.Even after finishing this movie, it still leaves far more questions than answers. Some things simply happen in the movie and you have to take a lot of things for granted. Such as for instance; what was with that whole Nazi-like group of people? Who or what were they supposed to be or represent and why and how exactly were they in so much control of things?I can definitely recognize the movie for what it was trying to be and do and I also still could really appreciate it for that. It tried to be more like early '60's mystery movies, that often involved a detective in the search off a killer and it often had a sort of horror/science-fiction twist and vibe to it all. And it's still truly being such a movie with its atmosphere, characters, main plot, music and whatever more, it just still isn't really a good movie at all. You could say and think that the movie should at least be watchable because it features Cushing, Lee and Price in it but the truth is that most of them are hardly in this movie at all and they get far too little interesting to do. The one that plays the biggest role is Lee, as the good guy for a change. And my goodness, at first I didn't even recognized him since he's using such a thick British accent in this movie and he really isn't using his own, very distinctive, voice at all. I still really liked him in his role and I though he did a great job at it but still his character was a bit of a stiff one and not all that suitable or likable enough to become the main 'hero' of the movie. Cushing's and Price's role is far more worthless. What even was the point of Cushing's character in this? And Price only shows up a couple of times and suddenly only starts to get more important toward the movie its end.It definitely does has some value to it and the movie also still has its moments but overall it's a far too messily told and written movie to become a good one.5/10 http://bobafett1138.blogspot.com/
tommy61986 I always loved Peter Cushing chasing Christopher lee as Dracula or better yet when Lee,Cushing and Price get together and scare us ,but not this one,all three are not together and have part time duty thru out the movie until Price took over at the end.it a roller-coaster of a film.what we see is James Bond chasing Frankenstein, chasing some Nazi crazies, some kind of mad doctor, don't forget the vampire.I would scream and scream again if they cut my legs off too. This is no Lee,Cushing,Price type of horror film..Cushing only last for 5 minutes and still get top billing.it go from action to finally see a horror ending with Vincent Price showing us once again in what he 's good at .but i wouldn't scream again for this so so movie.Lee stay as Dracula.Cushing stay as Helsing and Vincent stay as alway..the mad doctor.better yet ,see Madhouse instead
Prichards12345 My video copy isn't the original cinema version, unfortunately, but as Scream and Scream Again's not available on DVD in the UK yet, it'll have to do. The music sound track is not the original one - rights issues with Amen Corner's performances sometimes result in the lead singer giving it his all only for nothing to heard on the sound track! Well, enough of my dodgy videos! This is a bizarre and at the same time entertaining horror flick, with almost totally unrelated story threads being forced together at the climax to make some kind of sense. The main section concerns the hunt for "The Vampire Killer", although why Michael Gothard's character needs blood is never made clear. This is by far the best part of the movie though, and includes a long chase sequence between Gothard and the boys in blue when they finally catch on to him (in what must be the stupidest honey-trap in cinema history). One horror book I own describes Gothard's character as a sort of "bionic Mick Jagger." which is so accurate a term I couldn't improve on it.And we also have Vincent Price, Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee turning up at various points. Those cinemas goers of the time who went expecting a triple-teaming of three great horror stars were probably sorely disappointed. Cushing has one scene - not with the other masters of menace - and Price and Lee have only a couple more, sharing a brief bit at the end of the film. A great shame. The real star of the film is Alfred Marks as the dead-pan police inspector, dropping laconic quips by the minute, he gives full value for his screen time.We also have a Nazi-type dictatorship sub-plot, and a collapsed jogger who keeps waking up minus another limb. MI6 getting involved. And a downed spy-plane plot. This lot really shouldn't work at all, but somehow it does, holding both narrative interest and the odd surprise. It's all good fun. All it needed was Steve Austin and a few slow-mo fights to really make an evening of it!
