poe426 SEVEN SWORDS is an epic truly worthy of the appellation. While some of the wirework is WAY less than convincing (I've come to expect these kinds of gaffs, as has any regular viewer), the overall athletic abilities of the performers almost manage to overshadow the cgi- almost (this one's less about Real World physics than super-heroism, anyway). There are scenes of great lyrical beauty: the seven swordsmen (one of whom is a woman) ride to the top of a mountain to watch a sunset; they later ride into battle as meteors shower the sky overhead; there's a poignant search for an ailing horse that has been cut loose from the herd to go it alone; etc. SEVEN SWORDS is not a movie without some genuinely beautiful moments. One of the players sums it all up rather nicely at one point: "Worldly matters always end."
J_Charles This is a great martial arts film that could probably qualify as just a good film in general. It has interesting characters, a decent plot line, some great cinematography, and excellent fight and battle scenes. For those who hate the wire-fu genre, don't worry. They sacrifice the acrobatics here for some real gritty action, lots of blood and guts flowing with every severed limb, gouged eyeball, and decapitated head. The characters of the "Seven Swords" are dominated by Lai Ming, Donnie Yen and Charlie Yeung. The other ones are there but have much less significant roles. The design and use of the swords they use are quite remarkable. I really liked the secret to Charlie's sword. The plot line with the Korean mistress was a bit of a misdirect but it did play an important part of the story and gave Donnie a chance to try speaking Korean. The ending was the one disappointing part. You can see the director/writing wanting to do a sequel so badly. But alas, it never came to pass (yet).8/10
ppsantos If the action scenes were removed, this film would have been painfully boring. With the film reaching a very long and tedious 2 hours and 20 plus minutes, I expected the movie to be at least logical. However, some scenes outright stupid or ludicrous. For example, why would someone even pay for the heads of children and women when the imperial edict was to ban martial arts? So the bandits just attack helpless villagers and get paid? Then there was a scene when the leader said to free the horses so the villagers can escape. Why would do that? Then when the two swordsmen freed the horses, one horse named Rifle, was following them. The two swordsmen had to hurry and hide from Rifle. But after they can't see the horse anymore, one of the swordsmen hurriedly and repeatedly shouted out the horse's name, presumably to say goodbye. Stupid. I thought they were trying to hide awhile ago from that same horse? How about when Green Pearl and the other swordsman decided to go to the general's fortress to loot its gold? How could the two quickly get out of the cave when the whole place is under siege with cannons and the general's army is all over the place? Then the two was immediately back in the general's fortress. Then, surprisingly, the general is back in his fortress with his army and cannons no less to surprise the Green Pearl and her companion swordsman. That was some fast transportation back then, eh? Maybe I fell asleep watching this overly long movie so I missed the explanations for the above scenes. Given that if you take out the action scenes, the film would be boring, I would not be surprised to fall asleep in the first place. The cinematography is OK, although the viewer can see the obvious camera filters effects that were used. In many scenes, the "afternoon effect filter" was so obvious that even plants had the orangy/afternoon lighting on top and normal color on the bottom.Over all, the film is mediocre and trying to be "artistic" but came out flat, illogical, and boring. The action scenes were entertaining and bound to wake up the viewer. The rest of the film is bound to make the viewer fall asleep.
Fijario Went into this movie thinking its good to be another crouching tiger, or hero. But wait its not, its a action packed movie where flying around is not a factor they stick to the ground with some cool swords and evil villains...I would by this movie and watch it without English dubbing and watch in the actual language. So if it was good with English dubbing got to be even better.Great cinama beautiful shots.must watch ...
