carissecain First off.....the plot just doesn't make total sense. Allie is so destroyed by her boyfriend's infidelity and promises her new roommate Hedra that there is no chance of her reconciling with her cheating ex boyfriend. Then the two women bond, all while Allie refuses to take calls from her ex-boyfriend. The roommates seem to grow very close, as it brings Allie out of her sadness. I don't see any sexual thing between them and I think that's just another sterotype put on woman, and goes along with the theme of this movie. And I don't think Hedra shows any overt signs of psychosis, or even non overt signs. She erases one message for Allie, from the jerk ex boyfriend, but I think a lot of friends would maybe do that to protect their friend! And since she wasn't accepting any phone calls from him anyway!! So right at the peak of ladies new happiness, with the help of a cute puppy, Allie comes home to find Sam waiting with Hedra. This makes no sense why Hedra would allow him to come in and wait for Allie who had made it clear to this guy that she didn't want to have communication!! He says he sort of pushed his way in but still Hedra could have made him leave or even called the police or apartment security! And then the two ex-lovers talk and basically within a minute of talking they are back together and by the next morning they are engaged and moving in together!!!!! The makers of the movie then make these mundane totally normal things become stuff they aren't! Like insinuating the first couple of psycho or crazy things Hedra does is worry about her friend who never came home one night and get upset about Allie screwing her over really badly even though she swore that she done with Sam the cheater. Then, Allie acts like Hedra is insane for one: leaning on the door and making small talk with Sam and two: for masturbating in her own bed, in her own room when she thinks people are sleeping.....so is it now "crazy" to go to town on yourself in the middle of the night? Then the next day Hedra is trying to be sweet to Allie and making her and Sam breakfast and whatnot and of course the rudeness of Allie continues for no reason at this point. The woman totally screwed over this poor lady who trusted her and then turns around and acts so mean to her!!!!! So the girl has some of the same clothes you do Allie! For one she told you she loves your style and you took her shopping for basically the same outfit you were wearing, showing her you don't mind have some similar things. But of course that all literally goes right out the window with the whole puppy incident......but up to that point I literally was calling this plot BS. If we are to believe this shy slightly eccentric character Hedra can kill a couple times and almost kill a couple of more.....then why aren't we shown some real incidences that raise an eyebrow. To me this is just generic, male written (sorry, but true) story that compare or equate women's sexuality or closeness with each other, and anger into psychotic behavior. Building up these almost accurate characters and then turn them both into complete opposites of what we were shown of them. Allie being strong, yet sad, and leaving her cheating boyfriend Sam. Then out of nowhere and within minutes of seeing him she forgives to the point of getting engaged that same night?....... Or this sweet soft spoken, shy and eccentric girl that comes right in time to help ease the pain of Allies break up by being a good friend to her, not anything weird or stalker like or crazy like. And also reacting normally to some crappy news by a friend she trusted....and masturbating in her own bed at night, when people are asleep. And making everyone breakfast in the morning! To all of a sudden throwing puppies out of windows, getting the exact hairstyle of and pretending to be Allie, going to S&M clubs, killing Sam with a spike heel to the eye and knocking out the poor gay friend with not much screen time. It just is lazy, sterotpyical and lame and give these women a non-genuine feel. But, I love these actresses, Leigh more than Fonda. And I honestly decided to write this out of pure anger at Allie for breaking the girl code and going back to a cheater right away and then say yes to an engagement lol! But a lot of these reviews just irritated the living hell out of me and I needed to say my piece. PEACE!
Predrag This is a tense thriller about an obsessive woman who becomes too enthralled in someone else's life, and even gets herself mixed up in lies, deceit and other bad activities, and the cycle of problems just gets more momentum. The basic plot is that Allison (Bridget Fonda) gets a roommate for her Manhattan apartment (has anyone ever seen an apartment this large in NYC??) after her skirt-crazy live-in lover Sam (played by "Wings" star Steven Weber) runs around on her. It's Headra "Hedy" (Jennifer Jason Leigh) to the rescue! This is one of my favorite suspense films. The setting is amazing, an old spooky apartment building but a gorgeous sparsely furnished apartment within. There really isn't a lot of violence in this movie, mainly just at the end. It's a good suspense movie, though, which builds and builds. The film is stylish, thanks to Luciano Tovoli (Suspiria) cinematography. Fonda and Leigh give strong performances in this movie. This is an underrated thriller, which is surprisingly clever movie.Overall rating: 8 out of 10.
Irishchatter I thought the storyline of this film was pretty awful. I say, they thought that this would definitely look like the movie 'The Shining' and win lots of awards. It really doesn't go that far to be quite honest with you. Some people say it's odd, in my opinion, it actually is rather daft and stupid. I think weirder movies are rather good then non weird. I wouldn't like to be the one who sat the rest and didn't enjoy it. I sat down looking at this for 20 minutes and skipped to minutes of the credits. I would love to get those twenty minutes back but unfortunately, it's a human error you make when you hate something!I wouldn't consider people watching this, it's crap!
SnoopyStyle The movie opens with twin girls playing with makeup. Only child Allison Jones (Bridget Fonda) is living in a big rent control apartment in NYC with her boyfriend Sam Rawson (Steven Weber). She kicks him out for sleeping with his ex-wife. Her only friend is her upstairs gay neighbor Graham. She decides to place an ad SWF and applicant Hedra Carlson (Jennifer Jason Leigh) comes in catching her crying. Hedra comforts her and they become fast friends. Hedra slowly starts to infiltrate her life and copying her style. Her only client Mitchell Myerson is a creep. This is a great creepy sexy B-thriller. It's a great example of a well made exploitation movie. There are some memorable scenes and SWF becomes ingrained into the societal lexicon. Fonda is a good sweetheart and JJL is great as the disturbed mental case.
