A small town, desperate to recover from hard economic times, is under threat when voracious Snakehead fish mutate and survive previous lake chemical poisonings. The fish transform from pests to predators when human growth hormones are dumped into the local lake in the hopes of reviving the local fishing industry. Thriving on the hormones, the Snakehead fish grow to monstrous proportions, devouring everything within reach. Capable of moving and eating on land, they are forced to leave the now barren lake in a desperate search for food - animal, vegetable or human.

harry-austin You've all been there, you are with a couple of friends, and you have flicked through the channels and the DVD collection. and you have found nothing. But wait....what is this channel that you never knew existed, or that gap between the sofa and the wall? That is where you will find this shockingly terrible piece of cinema, it is not even worthy of the bargain bin! So anyway, you have nothing better to do, so you turn on the DVD player, or select that channel that you have never heard of. You open a couple of cans of drink, rip open a bag of crisps (or potato chips) and be prepared to roar with laughter at this pathetic excuse of a film. It is an insult to the 'horror' genre. In a nutshell, we have a very simple, crude plot. Some teens, including the attractive teenage girls in tight clothes are at a lake in the middle of a forest. A local has been caught disposing of toxic waste into the lake, causing the once small or 'pesky' snake head fish to grow to unreal sizes (one is the size of a bus, this made be cry with laughter). And so, these overgrown, carnivorous fish have strong pectoral fins, enabling them to move on land by using them as limbs. They eat and kill countless people, but as the effects are so bad, all of the scenes involving this a mockable. And of course, the teenagers seek aid in the form of a shotgun, as always. If you are a traditional film lover, who wants to see a horror film on a league with Hitchcock's or Craven's films, please don't expect much. If you are a 15 year old boy who loves cheesy gore, and you have equally odd friends you will adore this film.
shiningmonk Rather funny looking fish turn up in a small American town, where the local population are literally dying to be eaten in the silliest of ways. Examples are the dude who crawls towards a hissing monster with a camera and gets eaten, the twit who, noticing a monster sitting next to him in his car, tells it that he's dropped his spectacles before getting eaten, and the particularly stupid duo who manage to crash their boats into each other before getting eaten. The monsters, realising that they're winning too easily, try to help the humans by moving incredibly slowly and hissing a lot to advertise their presence, but this doesn't stop the locals from getting devoured.Bruce (Babylon 5) Boxleitner presides over this piece of hokum, as a Chief (Jaws) Brodie-style Sheriff, befriending an implausibly young and attractive female scientist, while his daughter takes a group of annoying teenagers out towards the lake at night, looking for particularly hilarious ways to get eaten. At least this film explains one thing, why aliens and other dangerous monsters prefer small town America. The locals there make particularly fast food!
grislygus This movie is one of the most unintentionally funny movies I have ever seen. Flagrant use of poor CGI and muppets make the movie hysterical. Beyond that, the main characters are pitifully incompetent at anything. You wonder just how stupid they are. The characters continue to ignore obvious solutions to tight situations and escape certain death with ridiculous ploys.Don't get me wrong. I loved this movie. I was in hysterics throughout the entire thing. Mutant fish puppets attacking a bumbling populace is quite a sight to see. Midway through the film, a man is spied by our sheriff to be emptying a container of liquid into the lake. He looks through his binoculars, and sees that the words "HUMAN GROWTH HORMONE" are printed on the side of the container in friendly red letters. One could think that you could not possibly beat that moment of pure ludicrousness, but the movie easily surpasses it in an insanely funny climax. This movie is destined to be the cult classic of cult classics.
Paul Andrews Snakehead Terror starts with a flashback sequence as various newspaper & TV news program headlines that chronicle a small town's attempt to rid their lake of Snakehead fish who are eating all the other wildlife & ruining the eco-system. The town decide to poison the lake in the hope that all the Snakehead's would be killed off... Jump forward 'Two Years Later' & Ray Wilkens (Don MacKay) is walking his dog near the lake shore when the dog disappears under the surface, Ray wades into the lake to try & rescue it when he too is attacked by something under the surface. It's not long before the remains of Ray's body is found, Sheriff Patrick James (Bruce Boxleitner) is on the case, meanwhile his daughter Amber (Chelan Simmons) is messing around with her boyfriend James (Matthew MacCaull) when he too is attacked & killed by something nasty in the lake. Doctor Jenkins (William B. Davis) performs an autopsy & finds a strange tooth, Sheriff James calls the 'Department of Freshwater Resources' who send biologist Lori Dale (Carol Alt) to investigate. Working together they quickly discover that giant mutated Snakehead fish are attacking & eating humans which is a problem as it just happens to be the town's biggest fishing weekend with people coming from all over so Mayor Cole (Scott Swanson) doesn't want any bad publicity. Can Sheriff James & Lori put an end to the Snakehead's carnivorous ways & save the town's reputation as well?Co-produced & directed by Paul Ziller I thought Snakehead Terror was average at best. Personally I have never heard of the Snakehead fish before & wasn't sure if they had been made up but apparently they do exist, are very ugly & do indeed eat just about anything that moves. The script by A.G. Lawrence has all the expected clichés & it doesn't have an original idea in it's entire 90 odd minute duration. The Sheriff who becomes the hero, the female scientist, the official who doesn't want any bad publicity, the teenagers in peril & the disposable character's they're all here somewhere & they are as dumb as ever & make terrible decisions which will have you groaning at the screen. The film is perhaps best described as a cross between Jaws (1975) & Lake Placid (1999) as it has very similar plots, ideas & overall feel. The film moves along at a fair pace although it can become a little repetitive & drags a bit in places. That ending is also very stupid & it just wouldn't happen would it?Director Ziller does what he can on a TV film budget but it has little in the way of atmosphere, tension & has no real scares either. It was shot in British Columbia, Canada & the scenery is quite nice. There are a few gory shots, a few mutilated bodies, Snakehead fish feasting on a dead body & a decapitated head although I thought the body count was a tad low.Technically the film is OK but nothing outstanding, it's competent but forgettable. The CGI on the killer Snakehead's vary from good to bad, overall the special effects are decent enough. The acting was alright but no ones going to win any awards for it.Snakehead Terror is an OK creature feature, it has all the expected clichés, it follows all the rules & sticks to a pretty rigid formula. Having said that it provides reasonable entertainment & passes an hour and a half without too much trouble. Worth a watch if you can catch it on TV for free but not really worth spending good money on.
