Scott LeBrun "Spawn of the Slithis" takes place in Venice, California, where a slimy monster born of nuclear leakage and contaminated mud goes on a murderous rampage. The hero determined to solve the gruesome killings is a journalism teacher and wannabe journalist named Wayne Connors (Alan Blanchard). Although authorities are quick to disbelieve good old Wayne, he does get some people on his side, like his friend Dr. John (J.C. Claire), his wife Jeff (Judy Motulsky), and upbeat diving boat operator Chris Alexander (Mello Alexandria). This movie, a LOW budget update of "Creature from the Black Lagoon", could have and should have been a bit more fun, but too much time is spent with the monsters' victims. There's a lot of character stuff that pads out the run time, not all of it that entertaining. Blanchard is a likable enough but rather bland lead. Fortunately, despite much of the acting being of the amateur variety, it's quite engaging nevertheless, especially from Alexandria. Bald pated, beefy Dennis Falt is priceless as an exposition provider who goes to great trouble to enunciate his words. Win Condict does an adequate job as the monster. However, it's character actor Hy Pyke that truly steals the show. He obviously believes that any role worth playing is worth OVER playing, and he tears into the scenery for a riotous couple of minutes as a police captain. The music score is entertainingly bad at times, there are some hilariously silly moments of slow motion, the creature suit is actually pretty cool, and there are little bits of gore here and there. The ending is very clichéd, but that's often par for the course with this type of dopey B level genre entertainment.Five out of 10.
Wizard-8 I had heard of "Spawn of the Slithis" for a number of years ever since I first heard of it from a showing on the CBS Late Night Movie, where I forgot to actually record and watch it. But thanks to its DVD release, I finally got to see it. I have to admit that my expectations were pretty low, hearing it was a really low budget movie by amateur filmmakers.Actually, I didn't find the movie completely bad. For a rock bottom low budget, the movie looks a lot more expensive than you'd expect. The "monster suit" actually looks somewhat decent, and the movie is directed in a way that suggests the director had some previous experience directing movies.Unfortunately, much of the movie is a chore to sit through. There are far less monster attack sequences than you'd think, with much of the movie devoted to endless scenes of the journalist character (who looks amazingly like game show host Bert Convy) going around and investigating. There are also endless conversations between characters, none of which is very interesting. It results in only a few minutes of slaughter and monster stuff. In the end, I can only recommend the movie to aspiring filmmakers wanting to make their own low budget horror movie - the movie shows both what to do, but especially what NOT to do.
beyblader0072001 Every review I've read on this page regarding this movie has been nothing short of outright "bad-mouthing"!!!!!!! if this movie sucked so bad, riddle me this: WHY IS THE CREATOR OF THIS FLICK MAKING SURE THAT EXISTING COPIES CAN NEITHER BE FOUND OR SOLD?! Answer: it didn't suck all that badly. I still have nightmares whenever I remember this movie. For some it might've been a bad "B" movie.....but it's shock value was a "10+" with all it's twist & turns. It did well as a remake for "The Creature From The Black Lagoon"....what gave it the shock value I believed it deserved, was the blood & gore. It wasn't off the scale like the movies today....but it still scared the hell out of you when the SLITHIS monster popped outta nowhere!!!! Give credit where it's due, folks----it was an OK movie for it's time. Truthfully.....I'd be tempted to do a remake of this movie & keep its original title....but with the passing of Stan Winston of late, it might be a bit dicey...but not impossible. THIS MOVIE RATES A "10" WITH ME.....AND I COULD GIVE A DAMN WHO THINKS OTHERWISE!
Andy Piantanida What a flick! I bought this one just for the front cover - it was in the 25 cent special bucket at a local pawn shop. This video was worth every one of the 25 cents I paid for it, and I'm guessing the producers lavished at LEAST 26 cents on the filming of this masterpiece. Looking for cheesy, overblown, low budget, backyard trash on film? Look no further!
