rdolphijn As Russia has nothing to be proud of, they opened a can withfictional heroes, who are bullet, flame and steel resistant.
paulclaassen Director Fedor Bondarchuk already won me over with films like '9th Company' and 'Attraction' (his latest film), which are both among my favorites. I finally got my hands on 'Stalingrad' and watched it in great anticipation, and wasn't let down one bit! 'Stalingrad' is among my favorite war films. It was also one of the more touching war films, and not detailed gore like some war movies. I really enjoyed the back ground stories of each of the main characters. All of them had a very definite reason for being there and being who they are. The film features some of the best visuals I've ever seen with great sound. The music was awesome, as well. The battle scenes were incredibly well done.
davidjrose-33359 Cant remember the last time a film lost me within the first minute of watching it, the very moment that a film depicts Russia as 'saviours of world disasters' its utter rubbish. The film was Cliche, predictable and over the top. There are better films about this epic and tragic battle that are worth your time that pay it more respect, and doesn't use it as a political vehicle to act as a PR exercise.AVOID
cwstone This movie is just atrocious. "Propaganda" films set during wartime can be still be great films, Hollywood has its classic as does The Soviet Union. This is NOT a film that is being "lost in translation" or one that is somehow inaccessible to me because I'm not from Russia. Someone below made a comment about how this no different than Saving Private Ryan and that if Spielberg had put his name on this film no one would know the difference. Sorry but that's bull, SPR was, unlike Stalingrad, a great piece of cinema. The quality of a film transcends language and culture. Stalingrad is terrible for no other reason except it's TERRIBLE. The hyper stylization of hand to hand combat, the idiotic use of slow motion, the cgi blood spray, video game quality battle scenes, boring characters, incoherent narrative... I could go on but won't. The Battle of Stalingrad, the largest, bloodiest and most desperate battle of the 20th century is made to look like the film 300 if it took place in 1942. There's one scene where an attacking unit of Russian soldiers take incoming artillery causing them to be set on fire. What do we see next? A couple hundred screaming Russians charging the German line, totally engulfed in flames and still firing their weapons. It was one of the most laughably stupid moments in film history because the intent was a dead serious display of how tough the city defenders were. I think Putin green lit this one personally to stir up some patriotism on his end. Wonderful films have come from Russia: Come and See, War and Peace, Solaris, I am Cuba etc. I don't need to be from that country to know those are good movies and Stalingrad is a dumpster fire.
