BA_Harrison As I sail past the age of fifty, I find myself reminiscing more and more about my formative years - carefree days spent with my friends, life with no responsibilities and no pressures. For me, that would have been the late-1970s and the early '80s; for Stephen King, it was the late '50s/early '60s, which is when Stand By Me, based on King's novella The Body, takes place. Brimming with nostalgia, the film tells of a group of young school friends who embark on a journey to find the body of a missing child. It's a heartwarming tale of friendship, camaraderie and adventure, but also a melancholic story about the loss of innocence and the inevitability of growing older, with all the burdens that adulthood entails.Expertly adapted for the big screen by director Rob Reiner, with an excellent cast (River Phoenix, Wil Wheaton, Jerry O'Connell, Corey Feldman, Kiefer Sutherland, John Cusack and Richard Dreyfuss), the film should appeal to all ages: youngsters will be able to identify with the central characters, while older viewers can watch and remember with fondness what it was like to be twelve, before reality came crashing down.7.5 out of 10, rounded up to 8 for IMDb.
nextfukinsong This is a movie that I have and will revisit until the day I die. My first time watching gave me a weird feeling of relating to my father, because he was the same age as the main characters during the film. If I want to go deep, I can say the train tracks represent the path of life, searching for something, but finding more along the way. Confronting obstacles and eventually having to choose your own path. It also encapsulates that feeling of going into the unknown, high school, college, marriage, parenthood, life. Still never forgetting the false sense of innocence of childhood. This is a movie that will forever be there, like a friend, family member or journal.
adonis98-743-186503 After the death of a friend, a writer recounts a boyhood journey to find the body of a missing boy. I kept hearing for years how great 'Stand By Me' is and after just finishing it i found it to be quite pathetic. All 4 of the boys were very annoying and i didn't like any of the perfomances, the pacing was too damn slow and Sutherland's part was just awful, this is a film that somehow got it's way on being inside the Top 250 Movies of All Time and i'm just wondering how it even managed to do that and something likes Goonies did not? It's just sad. (0/10)
cinephile-27690 Yes, I think pre teenagers should see this movie. It is rated R because there's about a dozen F words and more cursing but it is about 12 year old boys! I have seen this over a dozen times(it was my favorite movie for a couple years)and I love it each time! I first saw this when I was 15 because I sheltered but any preteener alive should see it!It's funny, sad, and touching all at once. If you love this movie, see some other of the director's movies, like The Princess Bride, Misery, A Few Good Men, When Harry Met Sally, etc.
