codymcmurray Finding ForresterFinding Forrester was a great movie in my opinion. It had every quality that a good movie should, suspenseful scenes, dramatic twists, and a great plot. Starting the movie off, we are shown Jamal, a troubled teen with a passion for basketball. As soon as his dad left the picture, he develops a love for writing which is shown throughout the movie. Jamal begins each day with shooting hoops with his friends, this continues for a while until they notice a strange occurrence at the top of an apartment complex close by. A mysterious man stares out of the window using binoculars to watch life play out. Jamal is then dared to climb up into this man's house and retrieve something that he would then bring back. Jamal finds his way into the house, looks around and picks up a strange knife which he then puts in his bag and begins to exit. Although the man was not asleep and noticed Jamal. Frightened, Jamal bustles out of the house only to later realize he had left his school bag in a fluster. He continues life only to later see a delivery take place for the man in the apartment. Jamal stops this man and carries out a conversation on the question of why he locks his car. Jamal questioned if it was due to his race, yet this is refuted. Jamal then showcases his impressive knowledge of BMW history to this man and then lets him go. Starting to walk back, Jamal is interrupted from a package of his own, his school bag which fell out of the window as if someone had dropped it. Jamal continues home and soon realizes that the man had gone through his notebooks and revised them. Average school work is not appealing to Jamal but his score on a test has caught the attention of colleges nearby. Mailor, a private institute had looked over Jamal's test scores and decided that he was intelligent enough to attend. Jamal is accepted on a free scholarship and allowed to play basketball for the school, although it may not be as enjoyable as it may seem. The strange occurrence perplexes Jamal, and he journeys to the top of the complex. Jamal knocks on the door but the man is not welcoming of Jamal, but Jamal has questions. Jamal is not allowed to enter his house right away, but the man is soon to forgive as he begins to see a skill in him. The man revises Jamal's papers and swears to never talk to anyone about it, but it strikes Jamal as to why he would help him. Jamal begins asking questions only to be countered with some of the mans questions which Jamal does not see as kind. They begin to argue, as Jamal realizes this man's identity, he is William Forrester. The first day at Mailor, Jamal is appointed an escort who is soon befriended. His career in basketball has made a turn for the worse when Jamal is confronted by the other players. They argue and challenge each other as if it was territorial. Being the new kid, Jamal is given a hard time but they eventually learn tolerate each other.Mr Forrester's desperation to not be noticed by the outside world has given Jamal the inspiration to take him out to a ball game. They enter the mass of people inside the gates, and are instantly parted. Jamal eventually locates him and they return home. Mr Forrester actually enjoyed the night. Jamals essays are getting better and better with the help of his mentor, but the essay competition is wrapping up and he needs a paper. He decides to take a paper from the apartment, breaking the promise that they had made. Jamal turns it in only to be told that the title was used in an article by William Forrester, his mentor. He is disqualified from the competition and is only able to stay on the basketball team because of his skill. Furious, Jamal returns to WIlliam with the news and they argue. Jamal's big game is that same night in which the victory relies only on his free shots. Flustered about the days events, he misses both shots. The next day at school is the competition. William makes a surprise appearance, reading Jamal's essay. Astounded, Mr Crawford lectures the class on how they should be inspired only to hear that these words are Jamals. The board and Mr Crawford argue on if he should be qualified but Crawford's decision ultimately does not matter. He is allowed to continue school and basketball. William Forrester decided to return to his home country, only later to die of cancer. This news reaches Jamal and then i had to go to the band hall for a pep rally. The linear progression of Jamal being announced the hero of the story to William being his mentor "trapped inside of the tower" who Jamal saves is great. The director chose Jamal to be the hero because he is relatable while Forrester is a very seasoned, and skilled author. Overall I believe this film is a great choice for anyone, willing to sit through no action of course.
joserivas-78973 WARNING Never expect the expected; Finding Forrester conveys a plot that leaves you wanting more from the movie. Each character supports one another profoundly. This film is recommended to anyone who's ever had a passion that become a drive to our constant lives. The movie allows the readers to understand clearly each character belonging as an archetype. In the beginning we see a city that intensifies mystery and hope. We see a group of teenagers playing basketball. Once their game is over they look over to a particular building next to the court. Then the camera zooms in to a particular window from the apartment building and then the camera zooms out again, but the teenagers have the look of curious on their face than ever before. Maybe it was curiosity or the fact, that every time the teenagers would come and play at the courts they would find the window's drapes moved to a different position. One night the teenagers dare the protagonist Jamal to climb the apartment building and discover what really happens in that apartment room. Once Jamal finally makes it appears to be a quite safe resort for someone. Jamal begins to search for any possessions that might be valuable, but soon he gets interrupted by the steps from someone. Jamal panics and begins to race off but suddenly he bumps into a man. Jamal is frighten but he continues to try and escape the room. What we don't discover at that moment is that Jamla begins his journey that will eventually turn him into the strongest conveying hero. This journey to Jamal begins as a blur and continues to be until he meets his mentor. Jamal has many situations that test his endurance as the person that he is suppose to be. For example he is tested over his intellectual ability and he has to prove that he is what most people this he is not. Jamal is willing to lose everything in order to save his friends rather than himself. That is why Jamal is one of the compelling movie archetypes there are.Without a doubt this leads us right next to the second most forceful archetypes there is in Finding Forrester. We find out about the man in the apartment and who he really is. This man is no other than Forrester himself. Forrester has become somewhat departed to society until Jamal meets him. The way Forrester and Jamal met was quite jocular at first and the second time was more of a second chance for Forrester. Immediately after Forrester literally opens his door for Jamal, Forrester accepts the challenge of being the mentor to Jamal. These two character become like a combination of yin and yang in order to have balance in their lives. Forrester has all the answers he is like the wise owl any piece of literature. He is perceived to be seen as that in order to serve for Jamal (the hero) as his conscience. Forrester teaches the key of writing to Jamal because Forrester is fully assured that Jamal is capable of having the capability of becoming a passionate writer like himself. Unquestionably at the end of the movie Forrester dies after completing every single aspect that he could do for Jamal… but just as we thought, Jamal is left with one last gift from Forrester. This gift has irony to represents the continuing of Forrester presence in Jamal's life even after Forrester's death, but also that this is just the being for Jamal's own story. In addition to Forrester, we find another reciprocal archetype character. She shows Jamal the challenges that he will face because she has faced them too. This character is Claire, she shares many common interests with Jamal which leads her to protect Jamal from any danger. Claire ends up falling in love with Jamal and he too falls in love with her. She is seen as both the herald and the lover in the movie because Claire in outcast that tries to fit in with the people she's has chosen to be around with. Claire is independent and tries to warn and teach this to Jamal in order for him help him understand what he needs to do with his life.Naturally, the hero has a shadow that tries to stop the protagonist from accomplishing his purpose in this case the shadow is Prof. Crawford. In the movie Prof. Crawford becomes the astonishing antagonist to have an enmity passion against Jamal. Jamal is tested by Prof. Crawford when he accuses Jamal that his writing is far too good for someone like him. Once Jamal embarrasses the professor in front of his class it's high fire throughout the movie. Prof. Crawford becomes filled with rage and assurance that Jamal is just a petty student who could never be better from where he comes from. Eternally there is a feeling that Prof. Crawford craves surpassing Jamal due to how much he lacks to be a writer. Prof. Crawford finally gets neutralized when Forrester shows up at the private school and surprises everyone for what particular reason he is there. Once he is done explain or more so reading Forrester explains to everyone that he has just read one of Jamal's pieces. Prof. Crawford is left in such shock he stutters and then is left speechless. For this reason, Prof Crawford is an excellent shadow that helps build the archetypes in the movie.Furthermore, Finding Forrester has many more character archetypes in the movie. These characters are the principal character archetypes that help move the movie's plot, they are like roots from Redwood trees that their roots intertwined together to help it grow into marvelous beauty. This is why Finding Forrester is one the best well driven movie plots where there is more archetypes and they play magnificent meaning to the movies message; friends help each other and will always be there even in moments where we lose all hope.
shinebrightlikeashyanne Finding Forrester Movie Review Gus Van Sant's (2000) film, Finding Forrester, shows a building friendship between a teenage athlete/writer (Jamal), and an old author incognito (William Forrester.) One day, Jamal was dared to go into what him and his friends thought was a murderer's apartment, to steal something, so he did. However, William Forrester was home, and when he found out that someone was in his house, he started yelling at the intruder (Jamal.) Jamal ran out of the grouchy old man's apartment, causing him to forget his backpack, which had all of his school work in it. The next day, Jamal and his friends see his backpack hanging in the crotchety old man's window, the old man throws it from the window and Jamal takes it home, only to find that all of his writing had revision notes all over it, written by the old man. Jamal is impressed with all of the notes on his writing, so he returns to the man's apartment in search of more help with his writing. After a few tries, Jamal finally gives up on asking for the man's help, so he sits on the stairs, when finally, an old bearded man opens the door and asks Jamal what he wants. After a few daily visits, and learning more about the man, Jamal finds out that the man is a famous author named William Forrester. William said that he would start helping Jamal with his writing, as long as he wouldn't blow his cover or take any of their writing outside of the apartment. Jamal's grades increase, causing a fancy private school, "Mailor- Callow" to offer him a full ride to the school. Jamal goes to the school to check it out and meets a girl named Claire that helps him find his way around, (which he also becomes friends with.) Jamal decides to attend "Mailor-Callow", and is placed on the basketball team as well as being placed in an advanced placement literature class with a rude professor, Robert Crawford. William continues to give Jamal advice with his writing, which results in his professor thinking that he his plagiarizing. In the end, William Forrester ends up going to Jamal's new school, and he reads one of Jamal's writings. The whole class is appalled ,and then William states that the piece that he read was Jamal's writing and they all start cheering because most of them had believed Jamal all along. A little while later, William decides to get out of his house and go see some relatives in Scotland. He says goodbye to Jamal and leaves for his new adventure, leaving Jamal with all of his belongings and apartment. There are many archetypes used in this film. One of the archetypes would be the darkness (in William Forrester's house), another archetype would be the birds shown in Williams's photo book. Another archetype would be 'the task' (when Jamal must score the winning shot), as well as 'a crossroads'(when William comes to save Jamal.) I believe that the movie director used these archetypes to make an 'ordinary' film into something more heroic. I really enjoyed this film and would recommend it to anyone, it has a great story and i believe that it should be credited more.
meaganpate A very unlikely friendship develops between two people, Jamal Wallace( Rob Brown) A 16 Year old kid who lives in the Bronx and William Forrester( Sean Connery), a reclusive old man who lives on the top floor of the building across the street from where Jamal plays basketball. Early in their friendship Jama receives a scholarship to a private school called Mailor;when this happens Mr.Forrester takes Jamal under his wing and really becomes his mentor. Throughout the movie Jamal becomes a mentor to Mr.Forrester too because he teaches Mr.Forrester how to live again; this is very atypical because mentoring usually comes from someone wiser and older, like Mr.Forrester. Mr.Crawford(F.Murray Abraham)would be known as the antagonist in this movie, his job as a professor is a substitute for being a writer. He keeps his students on a leash and doesn't give them a chance to rise to their full potential;nobody can speak out against him. Claire Spence( Anna Paquin) can be seen as the light in the movie, she gave him knowledge and helped him find his way. Her small role is important because she warns him about how Mr.Crawford is. That became a challenge for Jamal,by not letting Mr.Crawford keep him in a box like he does everyone else. Jamal's mother also plays a small but significant role in the movie. A mother's role in any movie is very important ,because whether they play a good or bad role that can have an effect on how you see the main character( the assumptions you first make of them).Janice Wallace plays a part in helping him reach his full potential by giving him the choice to go to this school. This movie is such an inspiring movie, the whole story line is based on friendship that wouldn't normally happen between two people like this; they come from two very different backgrounds. I will definitely be watching this movie a second time and a third, a fourth and so on. I would recommend this movie to anybody who is willing to not exactly be entertained by this movie but be inspired.
