This was one of those films I was expecting to have on in the background but not really find myself being interested in. However, I was pleasantly surprised and found myself really paying attention to the film and the music.All the main characters play their parts very well and come out with credit for their performances. Especially the young male lead, Nicholas Galitzine, who performs the music as well as coming across as the shy, awkward teen.There is also a quite difficult scene involving self harm, that would have been difficult to put across without being condescending.The plot line in a bit predictable to some extent, as you can guess how things work out but overall, this is a feel good film with good music and I came away feeling that I had enjoyed the previous 90 minutes.

If you have ever gone into a movie with low expectations and later left feeling surprised that it actually blew you away, that kind of movie for me was Beat Beneath my Feet. For the most part, I was incredibly impressed by the depth of the narrative and progression of the characters. Starring Nicholas Galitzine as Tom, the central character who is so socially inept that his only friend in his world is rock music. Unfortunately for Tom, his mother (who is played by Lisa Dillon) rejects this music because his estranged father was a former rock star who spent more time on tour than with their family. Another former rock star, Steve (played by Luke Perry) enters their lives and things start to change for both Tom and his Mother. Though the characters are broken and feel out casted in some way, they strike a bond that helps them escape their shells. When the story felt like it could lose my attention, it managed to pull me back in by adding short music videos, which served to express what Tom was feeling while simultaneously providing you with enjoyable music. For a movie revolving around music, this is an important quality to possess and Beat Beneath my Feet certainly delivered on this level as well as many other levels.

Follows your standard battle of the bands plot and uses all the clichés that come with it. Which is fine because I had this expectation before watching the film. But what I was hoping for was something that would make the film stand out. Instead you get really mediocre music from the main character and so much cringe your face will hurt after watching this. Every scene is just pure cringe and cheesy. I am talking people walking on stage one at a time to join in with his performance. The bully who has his own band throwing a fit in the crowd as his girl now flocks to the stage for the main character. Then paparazzi rush the stage to take photos of a boy doing a mediocre performance of a song consisting of about 4 chords... Roll into this some cheesy cliché songs with even cheesier music videos that the main character imagines in his head and this is everything this film has to offer. It's pretty much the worst film I have ever seen! In fact I have never reviewed a film before but just had to after watching this I felt so strongly about how bad it was.

I watched "The Beat Beneath My Feet" last night at the Berlin Film Festival and it was great. It's a beautiful story, executed with style, and the three leads deliver strong performances. In particular, Luke Perry of "Beverly Hills 90210" fame excels as a down-on-his luck musician with a dark secret who hides on a council estate to avoid being jailed for tax evasion. He's extremely moving and memorable as a damaged soul seeking redemption who finds healing through a dorky young neighbor, played by convincing newcomer - Nicholas Galitzine - who is hell bent on being a rock star despite his crippling shyness. The cool soundtrack, in the vein of Coldplay, underscores the story beautifully as well as the animated sequences that highlight the central character's fears and fantasies. "The Beat Beneath My Feet" is a heartfelt, entertaining, feel-good comedy from the UK that I'd highly recommend. Thumbs up to the team behind the film.
