frankwiener I was alive and even somewhat conscious in 1958, and I don't remember anyone questioning whether the Artic would stay cold as they do today. Can we then claim that this B horror classic was very far ahead of it time?Based on many of these negative reviews, some of you young whippersnappers need to lighten up a bit. You seem to take life and B horror films from the 1950's far too seriously. This film should be rated much better than 6.4 for its sheer entertainment value and for its "cool as a cucumber" star Steve McQueen, who appears as his first lead in a full length Hollywood movie. Without McQueen's charismatic presence, would the film have been as successful and as watchable? I doubt it. Overall, the dialogue is weak and often even laughable, but I liked it anyway and would gladly see it again. The irony of the movie theatre audience watching a B-horror film while being threatened by a very real monster should escape no one. Was it my imagination or did the thing turn red from the blood of its victims? That adds to its yuck factor.Beyond the creepy creature at the center of the horror, I also enjoyed the sub-themes of a younger generation struggling to achieve credibility with the folks in power, especially when the lives of the townspeople depend upon it. I also liked the other sub-theme of the frustration of a police department striving to establish respectability and authority among the people it has been hired to protect. After 60 years, I find both of these themes universal and very relevant to today's world.Has anyone figured out how the cute little doggy managed to escape from the locked supermarket before Steve and Jane made it out? Anyway, I sure hope that it found a good home. Poor little doggy alone in a highly unpredictable world. Who knows what will come out of the sky next?
johnbrittain I don't begrudge anyone's fond memories of seeing this years ago but, please, this movie is really bad. It's the kind of movie that would go well on Mystery Theater 3000 or whatever that show was where these guys in the front row make rude remarks about the movie on the screen. To have someone say that this was good sci fi must mean that that person had never seen something like the original Day the Earth Stood Still. That was good sci fi.
Tyson Hunsaker The Blob is seen by many as a fantastic, cheap, B-movie cult classic that's fun because it's campy. It features a young Steve McQueen in the leading role with an interesting blob of an alien attacking screaming and wailing extras throughout this poorly done mess. Campy can be fun and enjoyable for what it is. The Blob isn't. If you can enjoy props to you! I however, found this film not only bad but bad in a non-humorous way. The writing is terrible with every scene containing ridiculous and incoherent dialogue that feels unbelievable you thought a teenager wrote it. Disappointed to say the actors don't help save this cringeworthy dialogue. Instead, every line feels incredibly forced and unintelligent you're constantly being taken out of the movie to even enjoy the badness. The screenplay feels less of a coherent plot and more like a series of unrelated events with little flow from scene to scene. With inconsistent pacing, it's impossible to feel any real tension for characters who come across as textbook stereotypes of just about any group of person you can imagine. With everything just messy, the film's only saving grace is the concept of the blob itself. Yes it's not the best movie monster ever but the ideas behind what it is and where it comes from are enough to raise interest at the most. Some of the effects are actually executed in creative ways that made me say "Hmm. I kinda liked that."Unfortunately, the blob couldn't save The Blob. It's not a good horror movie or even a guilty pleasure. It's cheap, lazy, and honestly a little rough to watch from start to finish. This film might better suit a fun Halloween party as background noise where no one will absolutely watch it. Better to just skip this one.
