Leofwine_draca THE GUY FROM HARLEM is an extremely low rent blaxploitation film of the late 1970s which is so cheap that the whole thing has been filmed in just a couple of locations. The story is about a black private investigator, who desperately wants to be Shaft, who is tasked with bodyguarding an African princess for 24 hours. He contends with various goons along the way, and after that storyline is finished, he randomly goes off to rescue a kidnapped girl. The whole thing is stately and slow, with poor production values and an entire lack of incident to make it the least bit interesting. They throw in a lot of skin to try to keep the attention of their viewers, but it's a waste of a film overall.
Michael Ledo Al (Loye Hawkins) is the title guy and is a Miami private detective....I guess from Harlem. We see him on two jobs, one is to protect a princess from Africa (Patricia Fulton) and the other is to rescue a girl (Cathy Davis) part of a gang kidnapping and ransom. Things go very smooth for Al who easily subdues the bad guys. The sound was uneven. The lines corny. It was nice to see the 70's wood paneling style as well as bell bottoms and wide lapels. It has been a long time since I have seen 2 brothers simply shake hands without a fist bump. Available on multi-packs.Guide: No swearing. Near rape. Sex and nudity (Cathy Davis, Patricia Fulton
usn2001 One of the worst movies ever. The secretary can't stop laughing, the African princess sounds like she went to school in Brooklyn, and the fight scenes (karate? mojo-jitsu?) appear to be what one would get if you filmed actors going through the motions as they choreograph the fights. It actually reminded me of a bad porn flick without the sex. In this case, a little sex might have helped. On the plus side, the daughter that is kidnapped is pretty nice looking, and she has a great shower scened (although its pretty brief). All the rooms look like hotel rooms. Lots of mistakes and weird plot devices. THe detective tells his secretary to destroy his files when he goes off to meet the bad guy, Big Daddy. Why? Also, Big Daddy sounds more like a harlem pimp, not the blond Italian body builder he turns out to be, but, what can you do? Two thumbs up on the badometer.
migspit First off.despite some comments, this is not the worst movie ever made. There is no doubting the facts that it contains awful acting, amateur direction and production values, however its not the snooze fest some truly "bad" movies are.I quite enjoyed the ludicrous hero who seduces every woman he meets(within mins) and beats people up employing no fighting skills whatsoever.I like the fact the same interiors are used for different locations and the dialogue is corny as hell and delivered terribly. There's plenty of laughs to be had so its never truly boring. If you want bad movies try Curse of the Headless Horseman,Cannibal Terror,The Killing Edge or Black Devil Doll from Hell! The Guy From Harlem is far more entertaining than those stinkers. Now where can I find the sequel?
