MJB784 Boy did I just just watch a very disappointing comedy: The Internship. It had a few laughs, but was mostly boring and had nothing to do with internships. The characters were trying to get a job as interns and finally succeeded at the end of the movie. I usually don't give spoilers, but I was hoping the story dealt with how you intern Google rather than wanting to intern at Google.
TownRootGuy I love to watch Garret Dillahunt and Meryl Streep because they can sell any role. With other people I just want to see them do what they do. How much range have we gotten from Clint Eastwood or Mike Myers? Well, Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson give us exactly what we've come to expect from these guys. So Google gets a plug here, do you think we live in the Star Trek universe? Capitalism, it's a thing. Look it up. It's not like this is a first in movies, for 40 years the '77 Trans Am has been my dream car. This movie has great eye candy, outstanding naked eye candy, a good cast AND true to Google, none of the funny you came looking for is ad-free. It's basically a feel-good comedy. The only surprise in this movie is that these two clowns actually manage to deliver on the feel-good aspect. The Internship is a pretty good flick that I can watch every 2 - 3 years.
feyipuk Based on the IMDb page; Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson standing next to each other; buddy film. The first name on the writers credit is Vince Vaughn; he wants to pass on a message. The description says their way of life has been destroyed and they must change to be like young kids...but based on the previous statements, they're not going to, they're going to make the kids adapt. And like some real action Monsters University, that's pretty much what happens; the kids are made out to be geniuses who spend all their lives in the technology bubble and have no idea about how to cut it in the real world, while the lead actors are portrayed as Luddites, with a gift of the gab and charm. Their two worlds collide, they both rub off on each other and come out the other end with a mix of people skills and tech skills. Which seems to be what Google wants people to see its products. The premise is far fetched; neither of the main characters looks to own a smart phone or computer, yet they get an interview for Google. Yet that's part of the story; everyone has the ability to succeed, even if you're not part of the "in crowd". And while there is lots of yellow/red/green imagery, Android imagery dotted around, and plenty of tech related dialogue, there are no overly long coding sequences. The action flows. If it wasn't Google - with its wide base of user known tech - the story line would have fallen flat after a few minutes. The stereotypes fly thick, and I can understand why Will Ferrell would want to be uncredited; it's not his finest role. The good kids have a nice mix of character traits to make them interesting, though the intern protagonist is to stereotypical (with an equally irritating English accent). It's a pretty written by numbers under dog story, and if you haven't seen Dodge Ball or Wedding Crashers, watch them first.P.S. I can't put WYSIWYG as a summary (as it's deemed as shouting), but if I put wysiwyg it gets corrected to upper case! Glad I don't need to phone Vince Vaughn for assistance.
The_Film_Cricket It was a Wednesday when I saw The Internship. No wait! I think it was a Thursday. I remember it was close to the end of the week. For movies on either end of the scale – really good or really bad – my memory is always crystal clear about the time and the place. The Internship ebbs so firmly in the middle that I felt nothing. I strain now to remember anything about it. The only thing that I am sure about is that for one hundred and fifty nine minutes, I sat in front of this movie staring into its colorful maw with a feeling that could only be described as baleful indifference. The Internship had no effect on me. None. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Zero. Bupkis. It's a comedy. There are people on the screen. They say things in a humorous way in the midst of a humorous situation. It has the pieces that resemble a comedy and yet I could not care less about anything happening on the screen. Not that I carried a cup of apathy into the screening with me, heaven's no. It's just that I was ready to be entertained and the movie was giving me nothing. It's not the worst comedy I've ever seen. There were moments when I kind of smiled and I admit that some scenes contained a measure of comic energy. The movie stars Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson who have been funny together before in movies like Wedding Crashers and Starsky and Hutch. They have a nice rapport with each other and a natural ease on the screen. They bring some of that to The Internship. Vaughn and Wilson play Billy and Nick respectively, two old friends who have made a living selling designer watches for 20 years. Then one day, their boss tells them that they're out of a job because people don't buy watches anymore – they get everything they need by looking at their cell phones. Out of work, they become desperate to get back in the job pool. Nick goes to work in a mattress store and Billy gets the idea to join the internship program at Google despite the fact that they know virtually nothing about computers. He encourages his buddy to quit the mattress store and go with him.At Google, they meet the stuffy, hate-spewing leader of the program who reminds the new recruits – who are called Noogles and forced to wear propeller beanies – that they are all destined to fail. Billy and Nick see through his B.S. and set out to turn the Google think tank into a fully functioning frat house. That's it. That's the movie. The rest is a series of gags and set pieces in which Billy and Nick upset the establishment, have parties, take the other interns to a strip club, and get under the skin of the project leader who, naturally, wants to sabotage their chances.Again, I watched all of this with bored indifference. None of it stuck. I strain now to remember anything about it. If you see it today, you'll be bored too. Tomorrow you won't remember the title. Two days from now you won't remember the plot. A year from now you won't remember having seen it at all. I'm bored just writing about it.
