1920, rural Ireland. Anglo-Irish twins Rachel and Edward share a strange existence in their crumbling family estate. Each night, the property becomes the domain of a sinister presence (The Lodgers) which enforces three rules upon the twins: they must be in bed by midnight; they may not permit an outsider past the threshold; and if one attempts to escape, the life of the other is placed in jeopardy. When troubled war veteran Sean returns to the nearby village, he is immediately drawn to the mysterious Rachel, who in turn begins to break the rules set out by The Lodgers. The consequences pull Rachel into a deadly confrontation with her brother - and with the curse that haunts them.

jmix66 Gothic apparently equals dull in the minds of the filmmakers who created this yawner.Blah blah blah Ireland. Blah blah blah Ghosts Blah blah blah Something happens. Unfortunately for the viewer that something is 85 minutes after you stopped caring. Could have been a lot better if it had been a lot faster paced and scarier. It isn't and it wasn't.

davish_wulf-1 Eerie, misterious, with the perfect pace and perfect cast. A delightful Gothic tale with a touch of horror. This is one of the best movies in the past 10 years in the genre. Don't expect to jump on your chair or a zombie on every corner, this is not a typical horror movie, more like a eerie drama, set in a very dark landscape. Beautiful shot, much better than "Crimson Peak" (thank you guillermo for ruining a movie with again terrible CGI). A jewel and a classic, in the style of "The Awakening" but even darker, but a good base for comparison of genre.9/10 from me, that ending was a masterpiece.

sfairgrieve-908-872509 This is a traditional Gothic ghost story, and if you found movies like The Innocents and The Others slow and boring, then you will have a similar reaction to The Lodgers. But if, like me, you loved those earlier movies, then you will find much to like in this film.The Lodgers has the tone and atmosphere that are essential for a proper Gothic ghost story. It is set in a decaying, creepy mansion that feels like the one in Crimson Peak. (It also shares that film's uncomfortable theme of incest, but more explicitly.) And while The Lodgers pays obvious homage to the Gothic dramas that preceded it, I never felt that it was simply re-treading its influences.The story is original enough to take its own place in the Gothic tradition. It's about having to live with the sins of the past, and how those sins will follow you, like a creepy black raven, if you try to escape them. If you love a dark, bleak, and perverse ghost story, then The Lodgers is definitely one to check out.
