'The Nines' may not be everyone's cup of tea in terms of films, but I can certainly see it acquiring a 'cult following' in time. About the one and only 'mainstream factor' of the film is its star, (a pre-Deadpool) Ryan Reynolds (it also has Melissa McCarthy, but this was long before she hit the big time). Apart from him, it's definitely a 'niche audience' film. For a start it's actually three different stories, all loosely strung together (or so it seems - I won't go into too much detail regarding the plot as there's more to what's going on than meets the eye) by an uneasy sprinkling of science-fiction. Secondly, when you realise what's going on, you'll find that it's one of those 'high concept' science-fiction films which forces you to ask questions, as it doesn't explain every last detail in the movie. However, if you're okay with all that, you'll probably find an undiscovered little gem hiding here.I can definitely understand why Reynolds took the part. He gets the opportunity to spread his natural cheeky charm across three - vastly different - roles, allowing him to show that he's more than just a pretty face (and body in red and black body stocking these days). He definitely carries the film, but it's worth giving Melissa McCarthy a nod, due to the great (and dare I say surprising?) chemistry between the two of them which really makes the film fly by. Hope Davies is also good, but can't compete with the other two leads.'The Nines' is one of those films where you can't say too much more about it for fear of spoiling it, as you'll only be able to watch it and try to figure out what's going on the once. Basically, if you like science-fiction, like Ryan Reynolds, aren't bothered about films with low budgets and no actions and - maybe most importantly - don't mind slightly 'out there' sci-fi concepts then give this one a go. Dare I say it deserves a 9?Who's have thought all koalas are 8s though?

Alright, so I saw this movie since I have a thing with the number 9, like Melissa McCarthy and this was supposed to be some mystery in it. Well, even after reading other reviews I cannot understand what's mysterious about this movie. The end reveals everything as well as why three lives are intertwined. The only question popping up my head was "is this it?!?!" I read some reviews to see if I got it right and yes, that was it. Although beautifully put together and wonderfully acted, in my opinion The Nines is a pretty dull movie.

A troubled actor, a television show runner, and an acclaimed video game designer find their lives intertwining in mysterious and unsettling ways. The Nines are gods. The eights are koala bears. Humans are sevens. The plot was ludicrous, and I say that with passion. The build-up and suspense was pretty good, but the film never builds towards anything but things we haven't already seen before. I saw THAT with confusion because although the film can be considered "original" it's originality has been done before, albeit the twist... So instead of putting it to the point by telling you it's not good, I'm going to list nine reasons why the film doesn't do it:1. Plot holes. Every movie suffers from these, but the Nines contains so many it's hard to count. Maybe the director thought it was a good idea to place NINE plot holes to make the film more unique. No.2. Donnie Darko. Yeah, the movie is so identical, it's hard to put it into words. Although the Nines is a much worse film, Donnie Darko at least contained some good into it. 3. Trying to be unique. It must of been a long, long night for the writers to think of this crap. I mean the twist is silly, and the whole numbers thing was just stupid. I know, movies are movies, but movies need to learn to make more sense too. And don't get me started over the three intertwined stories, that wasn't unique...4. The Sims. I think this was the director's motivation. 5. Complications. This is what annoyed me the most, sort of. Unique films are confusing, yes, but the Nines takes this idea and shreds it to pieces. It uses confusion in order to pace the film correctly, and ends up leaving us feeling like dumb people. But truth is, the writers are.6. Story is too draggy and boring. Now although the film wasn't the worst, I was seriously questioning the prolonged scenes. I got the point the first time, only followed by more minutes to fill in the film. 7. Artsy. This may tie in with unique factor, but the film tries too hard to become something it's not. If the twist was more relevant to the story, maybe the film would succeed coming off a different way. But this way, it failed... 8. Ryan Reynolds. Yeah, yeah, lame excuse. But I don't like him nor his characters he depicts. Me and him just have a hate/hate relationship, but he made the film worse than it needed to be. 9. The ending. Yeah, the ending was bad. Not because it wasn't satisfying, but because is didn't make any sense and it was just.. Bad.The movie is bad. 4/10.
