ryanjgibbard Bland. The plot is very predictable and given away completely by the trailer. Characters are annoying or lacking in depth (why even get a well known actress, Sofia Vergara, for the opening five minutes for her to never return) and the ending is just ridiculously stupid. The redeeming quality is the hand-to-hand combat. A generic Statham film, you know what you're getting.
loevw Before going further, do yourself a favour and don't watch the trailer, they give away too much! Instead watch without even reading the summary and the surprises might make the movie more enjoyable. When checking out a Jason Statham movie the first thing I want to know is, does it show off his great fighting skills? And the answer is yes - but, there's a long wait and it's very scarce. This is a different Statham here, he does put on a different character, so some points for his acting. But the story just seems to lose focus after a reasonably good start and therefore lacks the intensity to keep the interest. They have some good elements but then throw it away and you end up wondering what's the movie all about. It seemed like a failed attempt at a drama or thriller. The (very) few action scenes are what saved it from being less than five stars. Homefront and The Equalizer are examples of films that didn't have that much action, but were good thrillers that kept me entertained in-between. This one took a bit of effort to finish. But if you're a JS fan like me, give it a try, who knows, you might end liking it a bit more than me, just don't expect much!
Paynebyname This is another team effort between Simon West and Jason Statham after they worked on the Mechanic and also Expendables 2 (the best one in the trilogy in my mind).I enjoyed the whole film. All the characters were interesting and as much as I like the great fight scenes I also enjoyed seeing an unexpected Stanley Tucci, Sofia Vergara (looking incredible) and lots of Vegas shots.I thought the film captured well the whole Vegas scene and I liked the scenes of Statham gambling and interacting with other characters.I like Statham and this has to be one of the most entertaining of his films that I've seen in a long time.I don't know why this has received poor ratings. It's entertaining, it's engaging and it's a Jason Statham film, what exactly were people expecting from a Statham film?Worth checking out if you have a remote interest in Mr Statham. I watched it at 3.30am and it kept me awake (which is always a good indicator in my mind!)
Dylan Gallagher I'm usually quite intrigued by Jason Statham's movies because he has this likable essence about him, and he usually plays a super bad-ass (If I'm allowed to say that..) but I feel that this movie was lacking in many areas. Most of the characters were seemingly 2 dimensional and hardly believable; the only 2 characters you really learn a bit about is "Nick Wild" played by Jason Statham and "Cyrus Kinnick" played by Michael Angarano; beside these 2 individuals, everybody else felt so paper- thin and out of place. There were a lot of scenarios in this film that seemed quite pointless because they didn't exactly fit in and the characters also felt pointless, and we had no idea who these individuals were as people because we didn't learn any details about them; they felt like small-time scenes to fill the gaps to meet the runtime requirements. I liked "Cassandra", the blonde waitress whom Wild seemed to fancy, though the chemistry between those two never really went anywhere because at the end, Wild got into a car and drove off, followed by credits. I was hoping for a more in depth conclusion, but it felt rushed, which made it uninteresting and unexpected (in a bad way). The most entertainment I got from this film was Statham's fight scenes. Once again, his "don't mess with me" vibe was brilliant to watch, but besides these moments, the film as a whole was a pretty big flop (in my opinion)..The film had potential but felt rushed and messy. Disappointing and sub-standard screenplay. 4/10
