HiPalmetto This must have slipped past me at the cinema - a big regret! But at least I caught it last night on TV and it was a fine way to spend the early morning hours. It's hardly highly original and it has a dark, comic-book (super-villain) feel to it that initially had me wanting to laugh, but dialogue , action, direction, etc., are so tight that it soon had me drawn into the plot. Boggs does a remarkable job in bringing the hardened mobster Truman Fisher sympathetically to life, in contrast to the complete soul-lessness of the evil killer he pursues. There are moments which reminded me of, for example, Saw and Se7en and though the plot falters slightly towards the end as we are led towards the significance of the intrusive flash-forward/dream sequences that pepper the film it redeems itself with a cute touch of Angel Heart.Shame about the title. Slightly too comic-book for the final content of the film. The sort of title that might better suit a Jet Li film than this little gem.
kerrybarger Glen Vorhis is a superb actor who plays a psychotic assassin who calls himself Rains (AKA "The Invisible Man") who has cunningly planned for years to bequeath his inauspicious legacy to an unwitting, abused pre-adolescent who must ultimately be molded into a like-minded psychopathic killer. Glen's subtle skills to portray his character are absolutely riveting in this action thriller… Glen's development of this pernicious character is reminiscent of Anthony Perkins's role as Norman Bates in "Psycho"."The Prodigy" is listed as a 2004 release, but just recently aired at a Texas theater for the first time and the DVD was released June 12, 2007. This is Glen's first public release and he plays quite the villain! "The Prodigy" was made a few years ago in the small Texas town of Denison outside of Dallas/Fort Worth. I absolutely loved this flick !!! It's definitely not for the whole family or the faint-hearted. The action is non-stop mixed with mysterious "dark" drama. The most recent movie I've seen that compares is "Saw", but personally I had a whole lot more fun watching "The Prodigy". It is almost 3 hours, but you won't even realize the time has passed because there are few moments when you will not be on the edge of your seat. Try to imagine watching Jet Li doing stunts for Al Pacino as "Scarface" in the next sequel of the "Texas Chain Saw Massacre". You may find yourself wondering, "Who is Rains & what is his connection with the protagonist, Truman?" Just as in all of the "Kung Fu" and "Kill Bill" flicks, there is an underlying theme that the compulsive need exists for all "masters of genius" (whether they are essentially good or evil) to perpetuate their obsession by developing an apprentice or student of the craft (like Batman's Robin) and to mentor him/her in order to perpetuate their art/skills/craft/knowledge/etc.. The Deleted Scenes and the Director & Editor's Commentary are very helpful in understanding the subtlety of the story progression.Grab the DVD!
bradkeller123 You will not see a better indie film ever and I still say if blows most of the studio films away. I'm not giving away any spoilers, this movie is so SICK you just have to see it for yourself. I don't know how they did it, but to have the combination of laughter and terror in the same movie is amazing. But what I took away from it mostly is pain. This movie wore me down, the fight scenes are so real and intense that they began to effect me physically as I watched. I really left the theater feeling like someone just kicked my ass. "The Prodigy" is a combination of old school and new technology film-making at it's best. It's a horror film, it's an action film, it's a drama, it's a martial arts movie, it's a sick and twisted comedy...Simply put this movie has it all.
jchilton-2 I was very impressed with this film as was the rest of the audience. It's hard to believe this was an independent film. It should easily be picked up by a major motion picture company. The story line and dialogue was excellent. The cast of the film could easily pass for any blockbuster cast seen today. The special effects and sound effects were beyond reproach. Having visited with much of the cast and crew on opening night, you can tell they put their heart and soul into this film.Ken Dundon made an excellent investment as executive producer of The Prodigy.
