choggs This movie is one of the most painful things I have ever experienced. As someone who goes out of their way to watch terrible movies I can attest to the draining power of this particular TV special. I'm a fan of the Star Wars saga but this makes me never want to look at Mark Hamill or any of his co-stars ever again. Everything moves painfully slow and goes on for far. Far. FAR too long. You'll see what I mean when it comes to the creepy dancing scene or the inappropriate scene of the grandfather wookie watching a provocatively dressed woman. Harrison Ford is clearly there for a pay check - or because he was being threatened at gun point along with the rest of his family and all he held dear (you can tell from the dead look in his sad and helpless eyes). Watch it for the Star Wars Canon. Not for fun.
thbehrens-82793 There's no words to describe how bizarre and terrible this thing is, so let me just explain some of the things that happen in this film, because it doesn't get any stranger then listen to annoying wookies grunting at each other with no subtitles for seemingly hours, having to sit through a cooking show hosted by a cross-dressing four armed cook (attempted humor???), Mark Hammel in thick makeup staring directly into the camera explaining that everything will be OK because Chewbacca is probably just running late for life day (WTF is life day???), Stormtroopers watching a hologram that plays a Jefferson Starship music video, listening to a bizarre musical number in a bar featuring a guy who drinks through a hole on the top of his head and a man dressed as a giant rat, seeing Han Solo and Chewbacca awkwardly hugging each other, and having to witness Chewbacca's father using a virtual reality sex machine. Not kidding. Oh look Boba Fett!
PrimeMisfit This is my first review on this site, and I can't really say why I chose this title over so many other, more qualified titles that hold a bigger place in my heart. I was not even alive when The Star Wars Holiday Special was released, so nostalgia is definitely not a huge factor for me, other than the general nostalgia of old television and Star Wars-related material. What I can say, is that I wholly disagree with those who may label this "Trash" or insinuate it is the worst thing to ever come out. As a matter of fact, for a TV special aimed at children, for the time, this isn't half bad. It connects with a more down to earth side of the Star Wars universe and reminds me of many holiday-themed TV specials I watched as a kid. The production values for this one is actually quite high compared to others I've seen. Since discovering this gem, I've learned to love it and now include it as a yearly tradition along with other holiday related movies and TV. The plot is both interesting and keeps you watching, and the characters, even though a tad bizarre, work within the context of the rest of the special.I think the reason The Star Wars Holiday Special receives so much hatred is quite similar to why Episode 1, 2 and to some extent 3 also received so much criticism. Many of the Star Wars fans that grew up with Star Wars forgot that they were kids back then. Over time, I feel like Star Wars has lost a lot of the magic and innocence it had when George Lucas first toiled over the first entry in the series. Grown up, cynical and jaded, we demand ever more from a franchise that holds a special place in our hearts. But people forget that the original trilogy isn't perfect, and is in fact, quite juvenile. For the same reason that a lot of kids enjoyed the prequel trilogy, I'd suspect children (who this special is intended for) enjoyed the Holiday Special immensely more than the adults who now are viewing it for the first time. Now I'm not saying the Holiday Special is perfect, and I'm certainly not saying the prequel trilogy is perfect either. What I am saying is that nothing will ever live up to the expectations set by the original Star Wars movie, and that this little, unappreciated gem should be seen for what it is. Just a whimsical, holiday-themed foray that dives into the more family-oriented, innocent side of Star Wars. I think it succeeds at that.
Jonathan Cwalina I just finished watching this god-awful thing and I can see why it never rebroadcast or was released on VHS and DVD. When I first heard about this I thought maybe it couldn't be that bad. BOY WAS I WRONG! This thing is so unwatchable I just keep begging myself to shut it off but I resisted and continued. So here is the story: Chewbacca's family (Whoever came up with the names has problems) Malla, Itchy, and Lumby are waiting for him to return to celebrate their version of Thanksgiving or Christmas (Life Day). So then we have constant shots of them talking to Luke (Who doesn't really care about them), We watch Malla doing cooking, Itchy watching a music video, and Lumby watching a cartoon about STAR WARS! So then the imperials come to look for Chewbacca but then Han Solo (Played by Harrison Ford who looks like someone forced him to be in this by pointing a gun to his head) brings Chewbacca home and they finally celebrate Life Day. I wish I could got back in time and stop myself from watching this. This thing is awful. If you are a Star Wars fan do yourself and George Lucas (Who also hated this) a nice favor and stay far, far away from this thing!
