Reviews

john mitchell Apparently Pamela Travers, the author of the books on which the film is based, hated it That fact is made abundantly clear in the movie Saving Mr. Banks, about the many times Travers and Walt Disney butted heads (figuratively speaking of course over the process of bringing the movie to the screen I can't, for the life of me, work out what Travers found so terrible about it Call me sentimental if you like, but, to my mind, Mary Poppins is just about as perfect a movie musical as you could hope for. The story is great, the acting is pretty much brilliant (even Dick Van Dyke's atrocious Cockney accent, in my opinion, just adds to the charm of the film) and the songs are nothing short of lyrically and musically genius. The only reason I haven't given this the full 10 (and I'm thinking now that I may have been a little stingy) is that, tonally the film could have been closer to the books. There is darkness - moments that are positively unsettling and even a little scary in the books, which are nowhere to be seen in the movie. Kids can handle darkness and even things that are downright creepy. Some kids really enjoy that type of stuff and for me, if Mary Poppins lacks anything, it's that. For the most part though Mary Poppins is an absolute treat, and it's no wonder that it has stood the test of time the way it has. It's a legendary movie for one very good reason: that it's really, really good.
BeholdTheRiversofBlood Yes, these reviews are genuine and not carefully selected. An absolute masterpiece. Don't question it.
dierregi I may be in the minority here, but after having tried to endure the full 2 hours and 20 minutes of this as an adult, I fully understood why I never liked it much as a child. It is not focused on children but mostly on the grown-ups around them. Mary Poppins appears out of nowhere and leaves just as fast, dumping the children who got attached to her. Some of the songs seem completely unrelated to the story (the woman feeding the birds, etc…) and are quite sad, Mrs. Banks has almost no part of the story, Mr. Banks has way too much, but he seems a deranged character. There are too many song and dance numbers, some very loud, most overlong. Some scenes are irrelevant to the plot development (if there is any) and there is a lot of banking and old men, none in the least entertaining. The only part I liked was the one with the animation, which I just discovered, was the one the author (PL Travers) hated most. Actually, she hated the whole movie, but for reasons different from mine. Some may object that this movie got Oscars, to which I can just add that Oscars - now and in the past - do seem to be distributed randomly, or for politically correct reasons.
Filipe Neto This is one of the most celebrated and acclaimed musical films ever created in that it mixes comedy, music, animation and joy in the right measure. Julie Andrews carries the film on her back thanks to the enormous talent she demonstrates every minute. She is truly great in the main character. Beside her, Dick Van Dyke is the strongest male character with a contagious joy. The script is very good and tells the story of an enchanted nanny who entertains and teaches two children, changing even the life of the whole family. The film is full of great songs that have become immortal and constitute one of the best movie soundtracks of all time. A great movie for the whole family, timeless and worthy of being on the shelf of any home.
