simona gianotti One of the best thing of summer TV, is that deprived of all trash programs, it offers a variety of movies. "Then she found me" is certainly no masterpiece, but it is a pleasant and heartwarming movie for a summer night, leaving the viewer with positive feelings. The cast helps in the positive perception of the story: Helen Hunt is here April, a New York schoolteacher, an almost forty year old woman, coming to terms with difficult situations and with a constantly frustrated desire of motherhood. Let's admit she is a little too haggard, and suffering, I mean, not all almost forty years old women with no children are that depressed and crabby, but she proves the good actress she always is, and she gets to convey the need to realize something in her life. The subject is probably very dear to the actress (and also director), who said this movie was ten years in the making and was probably very significant to her. Colin Firth, needless to say, would make every sensitive woman fall in love with him with just a single glance, and the role of a divorced father proves suitable for him, Bett Midler proves funny and intelligent. The script sounds sometimes a little melodramatic and unreal, but it is part of this kind of heartwarming movies. I will not spoil anything, let only say that the finale, although predictable, reveals an unexpected note, and sounds really moving.
Maz Murdoch (asda-man) "Then She Found Me" opens as something we've all seen before. Some sort of crazy Jew ceremonies (don't worry I'm not antisemitic) we've seen religious antics in all types of romcoms whether it be in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding", the wonderful "Sixty Six" or even in the opening of "Schindler's List" (not a romcom but nevertheless brilliant) and so we know what we've let ourselves in for. An average trip down predictable lovers lane. The plot is outlined in our heads already. Woman single, woman finds someone she likes, woman falls out with her fancy man due to complications, woman eventually marries love interest with some good humour and various subplots inbetween. Yep, that's basically what we've got here only we've got a long lost mum (or 'mom') thrown into the entertaining mix as well as our hero's quest for pregnancy. So we know it's predictable like most romcoms but "The She Found Me" is saved by the hilarious Bette Mudler who I would happily watch any film for. Not only is Miss Midler a talented actress and singer, but she has perfect comic timing and so gets all the best lines and rightly so! Bette Midler is the saviour of this piece and I don't think she's in it enough! Whenever our dear Bette is off screen we're just praying for her to make a return and on this occasion she plays an interfering yet endearing mother who magically reappears in a rather rough looking Helen Hunt's life.Helen has had a big trial during this film, not only being the main star of the film (even though Bette steals that from her) but she also wrote the screenplay (with two others so they probably did all the work) and also directed it! Helen the actress is OK, she has won an Oscar but didn't deserve it, Helena Bonham Carter was the worthy winner in that line-up but as Helen's the only yankee doodle dandy there, she has to win it doesn't she! Anyway, yeah she's OK, nothing special, she's actually quite an annoying character which isn't always a good thing. Helen the writer is good on the one-liners (if she wrote them) but not so good on the story development. Finally, Helen the director is very average, though there isn't much flare to direct with within a romantic comedy.Oh, and we also have our dear King of England, Bertie Firth (or is it Colin?) King George anyway, he's playing an English idiot who Helen quite fancies. Colin's character isn't particularly likable either so him and Helen are suited for each other.Overall, this is the type of film where you can put your knickers on the radiator, heat them up, put them on, get all comfy on your one-seater sofa with the massaging back (I have no idea what I'm typing here!) And get ready for some predictable heart-felt, cosy romcom with a few belly laughs amongst the mostly unlikable characters. Best enjoyed with a mug of chips.
Chrysanthepop It's great to see Helen Hunt back on the big screen. This time she assumes multiple roles, as director, co-writer and lead actress. Hunt proves to be quite a competent director as she tells a charming story set in a small town about a young woman (who was adopted by a Jewish lady) who desperately wants to have a baby but things go haywire when her husband leaves her, her adopt mother passes away and her eccentric birth mother unexpectedly shows up. 'Then She Found Me' is an unconventional comedy and Hunt has put a lot of heart into the making. With a solid screenplay, the film successfully keeps the viewer involved. She reunites with Matthew Broderick on screen after almost twenty years and her pairing with Colin Firth works very well. Even though Broderick and Firth have played similar roles earlier, it fun watching them matching wits with Hunt. Then there's a joyful Bette Midler who totally rocks as the eccentric talk-show host/mother. Yet, this is Helen Hunt's film. She's been playing supporting roles of late but with 'Then She Found Me' she proves that she can still lead a film. I admire that she has made her own thing and succeeded in giving us a gem of a movie. Hats off to the multi-talented Ms. Hunt.
Sean Daniel This was like a Helen Hunt ego trip. Oh, great I found a book and I'm going to make a movie from the book. I'll star in it. Yeah, that's what I'll do. Oh wait, I'll produce it too. Oh wait, I'll write and direct it too. Is there anything else that I can do? Nope, this is my Helen Hunt movie. And so she did.SpoilerI wanted to like this movie, honestly I really did. We planned it for a Frinday night movie, my wife and I. We got blankets and pillows and prepared for an hour and a half of romance and comedy. Nothing could have been further from what we expected. It was just awful. Her infantile husband leaves her, she meets the man of her dreams and blows him off to nail her "boy" husband in her car. And it gets worse and worse and worse. She wants to get pregnant and finally does with the man of her dreams but the baby is by her ex. Great, she's having the baby she's always wanted. But the baby dies. And all this time her real mother who blew her off when she was an infant shows up and Hunt treats her like crap. Then she treats the man of her life like crap and blows him off. She treats everyone like crap. And on and on and on. What a wasted night this was.
