Horst in Translation (filmreviews@web.de) I am certainly a bit biased when it comes to this movie as Oscar Isaac has not only become a lot more famous recently ("Star Wars"), but he has made it to my favorite actors' list a while ago. The Guatemalan actor stars here in this 15-minute short film written and directed by Brian Petsos and it was made briefly before Isaac's appearance in "Show Me a Hero" that won him a Golden Globe. Anyway, back to this one: Isaac is really the only prominent cast member here. He takes revenge after his girlfriend/wife cheats on him with his own cousin. Real revenge. Still, I cannot take this film seriously from a dramatic perspective. The brutal kid basically embodies exactly what this film is about. Violent comedy and dark humour. A solid watch, even if you probably will not enjoy it as much as I did if you are not as much of an Isaac fan. Still a thumbs up from me.
bob the moo There is a great sense of style and confidence in this short film. With Isaac at its core, and a Wes Anderson infused design to it, for sure it is easy to enjoy the tone of the film. A story of infidelity and betrayal plays out in the single location with only a handful of character, all done with an offbeat tone and a lot of energy. It is a short that seems bigger than its running time – well, not that it has the material to carry it for longer than this, but more than the confidence it has in the delivery makes it feel so.The problem is that it feels like it is really pushing on these pedals of style and confidence because it doesn't have much else going for it. And, being honest, this impression remains throughout the film because it is not as funny nor as smart as the design and delivery suggest it is. I did want to like it for what it did well, however it seemed all the effort was put into these aspects, and below the surface there was nothing that really that stayed with me for long afterwards.
