Maddyclassicfilms UFO was a live action series created by Gerry Anderson and his wife Sylvia. The series ran from 1970-1973. The series stars Ed Bishop, George Sewell, Gabrielle Drake and Michael Billington.The Earth is under threat by Aliens who are abducting humans and harvesting their body parts. SHADO is a secret military organisation whose sole mission is to fight the Alien invaders and protect humanity. The SHADO headquarters are based underneath a film studio.The head of SHADO is Commander Ed Straker(Ed Bishop), his deputy and closest friend is Colonel Alec Freeman(George Sewell). Together these two are in charge of a team on Earth and of a team on their Moonbase. Up on Moonbase you have Lt. Gay Ellis(Gabrielle Drake)and her team of purple haired colleagues, why they have purple hair is never explained and is utterly bizarre. The Moonbase crew track incoming UFO's and warn the SHADO Earth base.Other team members include Colonel Paul Foster(Michael Billington), Colonel Virginia Lake(Wanda Ventham)and Captain Peter Carlin(Peter Gordeno).An episode called A Question of Priorities shows Straker faced with an impossible choice, does he use a SHADO craft to fetch medical supplies that can save his dying son? Or does he use it to help defend Earth against an incoming UFO? This is a very memorable episode and Bishop does such a good job of showing how this choice tears Straker apart.A very good series with a very catchy theme tune and memorable title sequence. Many of the episodes feature some quite dark content and creepy moments. I've never been a fan of Anderson's puppet series but I've recently seen this for the first time and love it. I wish it had lasted longer. I'm not a fan of remakes or reboots but I think a new series of this set now would work well.

jefffisher65-708-541158 UFO is another of those great childhood memories of mine of 1970s TV sci-fi & horror films, and television programs. I believe the series had a delayed showing in the Sates, as it seems to have been around 1972, or 1973 when I recall first watching it. Something of a surprise it ran at all in my area, really. I was too young to appreciate Gabrielle Drake's stunning beauty at the time(it's a shame she wasn't in all of the episodes), but the various spacecraft stuck in my mind, of course, as did the moon base. It seemed reasonable in those days we would have a real-life moonbase fairly-soon, after all.Upon watching the series through as an adult, some problems become obvious; i.e., how a moonbase could remain hidden on the Earth side face of the moon from even small telescopes, how SHADO technology was pretty much equal to the alien's craft, and how remarkably poor shots the aliens generally were. That said, it's a classic series which deserved better when it was originally produced, and deserves to be better known yet today. No doubt the various vehicles will elicit laughter as models from today's young CGI-jaded fans, but are still quite cool, anyway. Some of them stuck in my memory for years, like the one where the alien tried to defect to our side, and the installment where a SHADO probe follows a saucer back to their home planet.Yes, a darker series than most in the genre, as matters didn't always turn out for the best for everyone, but this perhaps made it a bit more realistic in the end. Highly recommended.

CatoTSR2 This is the second greatest TV show in the history of the Cathode Ray Tube, next to The Professionals. Only to be ruined by the non want, or desire of the U.S. market. The second series became a rehashed show, which was morphed into the dire Space 1999: Ed Bishop/George Sewell/Peter Gordeno/Gabrielle Drake, Made this monster hit into a timeless unrepeatable classic. The score by Barry Gray was a continued superlative musical masterpiece. Gerry Anderson's first real attempt, at Sci-Fi without the puppets, was a marvel in its own right. Often repeated or copied in flattery, the technology and realism of the ships have no equal. Its a jealousy thing once again and some countries, just did not like the idea that us Brits, could conjure up such a brilliant piece of work. The best advice I can give to any wannabe' Sci-Fi Buff, is by the box set and indulge, in what should have been....Da Da Da Der!!!
