Spikeopath Could it be that the spirit of a dead cadaver is killing off all those who have medical dealings with her body?Judging by the unfairly low rating it has on the main internet movie sites, it's very likely that the slow pace and lack of gore has counted against Unrest, which is a big shame. Jason Todd Ipson (director) draws on his real life experiences as a Boston general surgery employee to produce a film of skin itching substance. The premise is nifty and the real location shooting really adds weight to this mortality gone awry tinged horror. There's a freshness to the film that leaps out, finding a film maker not merely content to pander to the formulaic hordes to win plaudits. Having an impossibly gorgeous female lead (Corri English) as the main protagonist would lend one to think that is not the case, but there's a rawness to English's acting that suits the character perfectly. There's a splendid realism factor to the picture, the blend of the real and the smart effects work nestling nicely together on the mortuary slab.Atmosphere is a word that has always been key in non blood letting horror parlance, and Unrest has it in abundance. It would have been easy for Ipson to rely on boo-jump shocks, but he doesn't, he uses his knowledge of setting and subject matter to craft a tight and tense thriller that manages to gnaw away at the senses, even ensuring that the cadaver, as dead as she apparently is, is a full and rich character holding court as the body count starts to tot up.The musical score (Michael Cohen) is a bit intrusive at times, a romantic sub-plot a little pointless, while the finale doesn't quite hit great heights given what has led up to it, but this is a smart dark mood accentuated piece and it is well worth checking out. 7.5/10
Peppered_Productions This is one of those movies I knew I'd seen before, then forgotten what happened. On this rewatch, I realized why. The movie is mostly slow-paced, and borderline boring. Overall, the concept and atmosphere were OK. The main actors work with their material, but for the most part, I didn't feel connected to the characters or the story. The reactions, in many scenes, were tame for the ongoing action. There is plenty of humor and realistic interaction to help identify with the characters, but overall, I felt it was too low-key.The basic story: 4 medical students are given a cadaver to dissect and work with. The one girl of the group senses something wrong with the body. She's left to be the worrywart as her partners work around her heebie-jeebies. People start disrespecting the body & wind up dead. A simple off-color remark, poking & prodding, or mysterious slight - they die.The story itself is muddled. I will have forgotten the ending again in short time, as it was anticlimactic. There was real potential to make this a mood-driven creepy horror movie, but it didn't quite get there.
loomis78-815-989034 On the first day of gross anatomy class four doctors in training team up to work on a cadaver they end up calling Norma (Petroro). Allison (English) notices the self inflicted wounds and feels something is deadly wrong. She can't convince anyone and starts playing detective to find out who this person was in life. Anyone that comes across the corpse ends up dead and sometimes in gruesome ways. In life Norma was possessed by a demon and her soul still is in death. This movie starts off on a creepy note and is able to hold it for quite awhile. Unfortunately, as the story is revealed the worse this gets. There is enough blood and gore and gross moments to keep you going for awhile, but the reveal is disappointing. Director Jason Todd Ipson manages some good atmosphere and a sense of dread the film really needed, but the script and the movie starts getting away from him towards the end. Corri English is an absolute head turner and will keep your attention along with this movie up to a certain point. A near miss.
Marc Davis We've seen it a million times. In horror films of this type, it's by the numbers: The main character has a vision, premonition or dream about someone that died, usually right after moving into a dark, creepy house (in this case, after starting an anatomy class in a dark, creepy hospital morgue). Then people start dying until the same main character figures out what the dead person's spirit wants, as if there's nothing better to do in the afterlife besides play practical jokes on the living. This movie has some really chilling parts, like in the beginning where we get treated to an intense close-up for about a minute of a woman obviously possessed. This same woman eventually turns up dead in the anatomy class where our star med student Alison starts feeling something isn't quite right about this cadaver. Corri English does a great job here as Alison and along with her love interest and fellow anatomy classmate, Brian (Scot Davis), they pretty much carry the entire movie. This movie had potential but was ultimately tripped up by the worn out plot and some of the circumstances around the deaths were over the top while others just showed up in scenes dead with no real suspense.
