Woodyanders This film is based on an actual incident which occurred in 1996. Cocky and charismatic Roderick "Rod" Justin Farrell (an excellent and compelling performance by Drew Fuller) is the leader of a gang of oddball outcast teenagers who think they are vampires. Rod brutally murders the parents of the reluctant Heather Ann Wendorf (well played by Kelly Kruger) and steals their car so the gang can go on the lam. Director John Webb, working from a grim and absorbing script by Aaron Pope, nicely captures the mixed-up Goth kids' warped fantasy world and alienated nihilistic mindset without ever passing judgment on the characters or resorting to lurid sensationalism. Moreover, Webb and Pope firmly ground the morbidly engrossing story in a completely plausible everyday reality. Better still, Webb and Pope admirably refuse to explain the kids' actions; instead they merely present these crazed youths as they are. This film further benefits from bang-up acting from an able cast, with especially praiseworthy work by Alex Breckenridge as sullen Charity Lynn Keesee, Timoty Derriest as the loopy, nerdy Howard Scott Anderson, Marina Black as the willful Dana Lynn Cooper, Larry Dirk as the folksy Sheriff Mike Dane, Mimi Craven as Heather's concerned mother Ruth, and David Wells as Heather's weary dad Rick. The outbursts of violence are genuinely startling in their abruptness and brutality. Kristian Bernier's slick cinematography, Guy Harrington's moody, shivery score, and the cool rock soundtrack are all up to speed. Worth a look.
Nickolaus Pacione If you go into this knowing this isn't a vampire movie and based on a true crime you'll appreciate it. My ex-room mate got this one for a party she was throwing thinking it was a vampire movie, but I knew more about the case personally because when it happened I was working at College of DuPage. The killer in the story tries to portray his reality as a vampire but he's just a disturbed individual himself. He leaves the teenager girl an orphan because of it -- and this also leads into how the author of the book would also end up writing the book based on the case. One of those movies you'll enjoy if you know what really happened and what lead into the movie. It is a true story. The movie emerged when my own true crime outing, The Cabbie Homicide: October 13, 1993 was made live. When one examines the events of the crime then go into this movie, they're in for nightmare fuel when they realize this happened. Though the writers of the movie form took some liberties on how the murderer looked as he was making faces at the camera and had very long hair when they dragged him through the courtroom.
SpookGrrrl I read somewhere that the acting in this movie made it worth watching, as did the depictions of the crime itself and the accurate representation of the real-life facts. May I state for the record that I would like to thrash the person who said this repeatedly about the face and neck.I love a good true crime thriller, so I took a chance and got the DVD from Amazon; I had already read Aphrodite Jones' account of the case in her novel "The Embrace" and was clamoring for something a little mo' better. I'll be trading in this DVD as soon as possible to receive store credit at my local media outlet, and I'm kicking myself for wasting my money and time on this worthless piece of sensational trash. Seriously--there is nothing redeeming or worthwhile about "Vampire Clan," and I would strongly urge anyone even remotely curious to steer clear. The worst of it is that the story had potential; the sordid tale of Rod Ferrell and his blood-drinking, spell casting, Masquerade-playing groupies is just crazy enough to be the subject of a great movie. John Webb and Aaron Pope killed anything good about it, unfortunately. The flashback to the scene at the Vampire Hotel is unnecessary and stupid in light of the fact that it's the only reference to anything that happened before Rod and his lackeys showed up in Eustis, Florida (well, that and an unexplained bit about Jaden Murphy). Every other line of dialog between every character in this entire film is forced and unrealistic. I LAUGHED at the supposed accurate portrayal of the crime scene. I've seen scarier blood and gore in the worst B horror movies ever made. David Wells--portraying Rick Wendorf--looked less like a murder victim and more like a man who had indulged in some bizarre ritual with a jar of strawberry jelly. Drew Fuller, despite being exceedingly easy on the eyes, sucks worse than a Hoover vacuum with a giant hairball stuck in the hose. He is not a convincing Rod Ferrell. His desperate attempts to come across as an evil bloodthirsty murderer are just plain goofy. Ditto that for Timothy Lee DePriest, who was SUPPOSED to be goofy (Scott Anderson was nothing if not a big dork trying to emulate his hero, Rod) and made me want to smack HIM with the tire iron--please don't anyone ever hire this guy to act in anything ever again, not even a toothpaste commercial. To summarize...I dislike Kevin Costner movies, and yet I would rather have my eyelids duct-taped to my forehead and be forced to watch "Waterworld," "The Postman" and "Wyatt Earp" back-to-back than sit through another viewing of "Vampire Clan."
artstar04 Alright. SO it sounded good. It started to look good, while we watched it it seemed good and then it ended. It ended and the story didn't even really start. So i guess the massive problem with this movie is that of Terror Toons... the camera lense was off and the sound was on. Who in their right minds would read the script for this movie and say "oh gosh! I love it!" and then have the balls to go and actually film it?!?!? This movie sucked. Stay AWAY FROM IT!!!!!!!! IF you see this in the video store and say that it looks interesting run... run before its toooooooo late! GO NOW! Don't SEE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! its not worth your time or your money. even if its free to rent... don't GET THIS FILM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT SUCKED MASSIVE CULO!!!!!!
