MovieSonic Loved it! Watch the original though (don't be afraid of subtitles, you'll get used to them!)This was a fantastic bit of escapism. I thought the production value was on par with Iron Sky (2012) and there were some unique and memorable scenes like in the bathroom and then in the bath. There were beautiful sequences like the opening, the car chase and the fight scenes.I was expecting something like Vamps (2012) with Alicia Silverstone which I really enjoyed, but this was definitely not played for laughs and was fairly gruesome in some parts.Max Riemelt just became my new favourite male actor! Both he and Karoline Herfurth played their parts brilliantly and they had plenty of chemistry.I would have liked to have seen more backstory for the vampires, perhaps some flashbacks of their former lives but this is a minor criticism. If you're a fan of this genre, it's definitely one to watch! 8/10
WakenPayne Okay I have watched a movie that my brother cited as being one of the best movies of the last five years. I personally think that it did quite a lot of things right - I mean more than Hollywood movies have done in that time but then again there are a few really big gripes I have with this movie.Okay so the story. Lena is a delinquent who due to just being in the wrong place at the wrong time gets bitten by a vampire named Louise. When she finds out naturally she freaks out at what is happening to her and at first she loves the life of a vampire of staying up all night, having a lot of money, fast cars and... Well you get the drill. As time goes on however this lifestyle deteriorates into one that is out of control and does whatever she can to escape it.Okay my big gripe with this movie is that sometimes it just leaves the viewer to tie up stuff on their own. For example - The gift. It is established that vampires have some way of telling whether humans can be turned or not and... That's all there is to know apparently because I do kind of want to know "Okay, How can they tell?".The ending is also really ambiguous. I'll try to reveal as little as possible if anyone still wants to see this movie but the cops are on the tail of Lena and the other cop named Tom and it ends with the cops arriving to the spot where you last saw them... WHERE DID THEY GO! I was invested in what was going on - Does Tom have the gift and Lena turned him so they travel the world and stuff together? It just expects you to fill in these gaps.I guess another big complaint is that it actually has a scene that is kind of sexist towards men. Now I'm not saying "Us poor men" No, We've had it pretty good in terms of portrayal. But it tries to make out that the reason why Male vampires are extinct is that the men are stupid and power hungry and threatened to expose the whole "vampires exist" thing. Yeah because in this movie the vampires do a good job of that by climbing up and around buildings like Spider-Man in plain sight, setting people on fire faking a plane crash where apparently everyone's blood was completely drained and everyone died before the crash even happened. Yeah because that's keeping a secret okay!...Okay my point is that if you want to make a feminist movie - fine! I'll support that decision wholeheartedly but please don't have a scene which is devoted to building all men up as being like that and have the female characters do something similar by the movie's end.Okay my complaints are really big for this movie and after reading all that you'll probably be asking why I gave this an 8. Well As I said I was actually pretty invested with what was going on. I think one of the best scenes in the entire movie is where Charlotte is visiting her daughter in a retirement home. The directing and acting of that scene is handled so beautifully that it is hard not to feel at least something for Charlotte's character after that.I liked how instead of these vampire films that say "being a vampire is awesome" or "It actually sucks" this movie kind of does both by saying okay at first this lifestyle seems like every teenager's ultimate fantasy but over time it changes into basically "It actually sucks". It doesn't just make this transition out of nowhere either which I liked. The acting is marvelous. I will definitely be looking at other things that these actors have done. They pretty much elevate some of this material especially the sketchy parts. I'd say the acting is worth the entire watch of this movie alone.I also like the visual effects. This CG work is done really well especially in the scene where Lena changes appearance from goth girl to average person in the streets. I mean wow is this stuff well done. I guess other effects that I liked was the jumping out of a plane in the opening among others.I'd also say the directing is pretty good. The Cinematography is really good and the writing - while extremely sketchy in some parts it does actually hold up in parts as being dramatic and establishes character and the way vampires live really well too.If you want to watch this movie I'd say go ahead. I mean if you can get past some of the complaints I have (the only one I haven't mentioned being that Nora is annoying but I guess that's a nitpick) then I'd say go watch it. It is a really good movie if you can get past the flaws and it probably is one of the best vampire movies of the past few years. If you like this sort of thing - check it out.
Ash Hamilton I was going to start this review out with a little dissertation on how women are crazy even when they are undead... and then I thought better of it... Eastern European women are crazy even when they're undead. Now that I've alienated half my audience... We Are the Night is not about the crazy undead of the female variety, although it might appear that way on the surface. In fact, much unlike its English dubbed trailer leads you to believe, We Are the Night is actually very much about despondency and loneliness... OK, it might also be about schmokin hot lesbian vampires too... and thank God, right?!?!? All that loneliness gets a little depressing unless you throw in a little Transylvanian girl-on-girl!!! Woot!!! Dat's wat I's sayin!!! Ahem... We Are the Night might be misinterpreted as a movie that panders to the club going, sexually experimental, feminist ravers that, for the most part, are the cardboard cut out vamps of a lot of b-movie fare as of late. If that is all you take away with you, then you have missed one of the better vampire films to come out. One that I feel falls in the same arena as Let The Right One In, Near Dark, and their deserving contemporaries.Lena (Karoline Herfurth) lives a life dominated by running from the police, pickpocketing and navigating the German underground. Her life seems pointless, without substance, and more importantly without a sense of hope. Through her somewhat less than noble lifestyle Lena meets an overzealous adrenaline junkie cop, Tom (Max Riemelt) and three energetic, rebellious, glamorous and dangerous club goers: Louise, Charlotte and Nora.**SPOILERS** Ringleader of the three enigmatic, Louise (Nina Hoss), takes an instant liking to Lena's fiery spirit and inducts her into the supernatural world of the vampire. Tom continues to search for Lena whose free spirit has interested him as well and a very untraditional love triangle follows. The story here is simple enough and the conflict is as tired as the premise of most vampire movies to date. Lena rejects her new vampire habits, condemns her peers for their blood-lust and seeks to pursue Tom's affections. Again, I said simple and tired, right? C'mon... I can still have self awareness and like this movie... Don't hate!!! It is director Dennis Gansel that takes the tale and gives it life that reaches beyond the story. Gansel's vampires are struggling to hold on to anything that gives them humanity, and, in doing this, makes them somewhat more human than they're breathing counterparts. They are tragic, they are hopeless, and their animosity allows them to stave their misgivings, losing themselves in indulgences, creating each moment with enough intensity to erase those before it. We get the feeling that this is cheap band-aid psychological reparations and each vampire in the original core three is slowly losing themselves to their own despair. Louise has created a war on men, both alive and undead, almost singlehandedly wiping out the male population of bloodsuckers. Charlotte is lost in her bygone days of the roaring twenties, never giving up the grief that she felt for her loved ones, while Nora is living the life of a spoiled teenager, looking for the affections of men that she is doomed to destroy. They are sisters in bondage and Lena starts a chain of events that leads each to greater examine their immortality. It is Louise that struggles to create a world where she can no longer cling to humanity, finding companionship so strong and eternal that no world, living or undead has to matter anymore. Lena represents her golden ticket and it ultimately, is her undoing. German language with English subtitles, We Are the Night is heavy on atmosphere, not so much on dialogue and allows the actors to emote with more than just their words. Karoline Herfurth takes full advantage of this and allows it to flesh out a character that at times the script neglects to do. Max Riemelt feels the stiffest here, but slides easily into the love interest role and doesn't distract from the real star here which is Torsten Breuer's cinematography. Shot for shot, this is a gorgeous film. Breuer and Gansel manage to submerge their nocturnal shots in brilliant, saturated color while keeping our daytime in We Are the Night monochromatic and cold. The movie's pace is just right for its content and the conclusion is a torrent of roller-coaster camera theatrics. We Are the Night might not satisfy the most critical of vampire enthusiasts, but it holds its own enough to warrant repeat viewings and a place side by side some of the sub-genre's best offerings. Highly Recommended.
SilthDraeth I am writing this mainly because a couple reviews on here start making the "Twilight" comparison. *below will contain some spoilers* The only thing it has in common with Twilight would be vampires, but so does "Let the Right One In", Nightwatch, Bram Stoker's Dracula, etc, there are tons of movies with vampires in them, lest we make a comparison of them all? This movie definitely has adult themes, you even see a locker room with naked men and their penises, sadly, for a lesbian vampire film, that is the only true nudity.I had no problem following the story of a young girl, living in the drudge of society, not quite sure where she belongs. This is her story more than anything else. The acting by the main actress is superb, as is the trio of vampires. The main male lead pulls off a moonstruck in love young man just fine, wanting to play the hero for his heroin in distress.Superb movie. I rated it a nine. This, like "Let the Right One In" (watch the original, "Let Me In" the American remake is trash compared to the original), is primarily a movie about self discovery that happens to include vampires, than it is a movie about vampires. So give it a go, and stop comparing it to Twilight. I wish I could have wrote this review without having to bring up Twilight just to state how different it is.
