serafinogm I saw this film when it came out in 1991 and just rewatched it (a quarter century later) and my enjoyment index hasn't diminished a bit. Dreyfuss and Murray are superb, in fact the whole cast was excellent but I particularly enjoyed the performances by Dreyfuss and Murray. Murray is a terrific comedic talent but Dreyfuss proved to be his equal. I recommend this film for all ages so that they may enjoy some relaxed down time and frequent laugh spasms. This was the first film I saw Murray in where he showed promise as an actor and he has had great success since. For all that Bob put Leo through I hope Dr. Marvin wins the lawsuit!

powermandan My views on this film are a bit lower than most. A bit of it comes from my own experiences with psychologists and a bit comes from true masterpieces of similar films. Either way, I can't deny the wonder that the movie brings.Bill Murray stars as Bob Wiley, a role I think is his best and the one he should have received an Oscar nomination for. Bob suffers from depression, severe anxiety, and phobias towards just about everything. He is funny enough to laugh but serious enough to sympathize. His latest shrink had enough of him and caused him to quit the practise. But before the guy does, he appoints Bob to Leo Marvin, played by Richard Dreyfuss. Leo agrees to meet Bob just to see who he will be dealing with when he gets back from summer vacation. Their brief meeting gives Bob hope and Leo gives him a copy of his latest book "Baby Steps." All Leo wants is to spend some carefree time with his family at their cottage and make his guest appearance on "Good Morning America" a success. But Bob becoming overly attached threatens all of Leo's plans as he crashes the cottage. The family loves Bob but Leo grows to despise him, sending Leo on the brink of insanity.The relationship between Bob and Leo is awesome. Being with a loving family is just what Bob needs, but is annoys Leo to death. I did think that the progression of Leo into madness. Leo wants to destroy Bob once and for all. The family loving Bob was also well done. But Bob progressively getting better was something that seemed to to be the thing that the writers just wanted to get out of the way. Bob's progression into normality was all-too quick. With as many problems that Bob has, it would realistically have taken him much longer to get at the stage he's at. The one flaw that I think made this movie suffer was Bob and Leo not reconciling. Bob loves Leo, but Leo's hatred of Bob remains. I know that this isn't much of a "buddy-movie," but having Bob and Leo becoming friends would have made the movie great. That would have added morals and sentimental values. It would have made the heart grow. Check out Planes Trainer & Automobiles, Rain Man, Big Bully (I know it sucked, but the ending saved it), and 3 Women, these films are great examples of reconciling that saved the movie. Leo learning to love Bob back would've brought him out of his self-centred world and the movie would have worked as more than a comedy.So have stated why this movie is good and not great. This movie being good is enough where I wouldn't mind seeing it again.

Predrag A nice surprise was to notice that Frank Oz is the director of this movie as well. He has also done the "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels", a movie I have in my top 5. What is common in these two movies, is for sure, the great locations both of them are filmed, as well as the chemistry between the protagonists. Also the soundtrack of this two movies is very similar. During the movie is amazing how your compassion shifts from Bill Murray to Richard Dreyfuss and vice versa. At the end of course Richard Dreyfuss is to be pitied. Admitedly in the beginning what takes place in New York can make you think is a so and so comedy but when the action moves at the country house of the doctor then the movie becomes a masterpiece.The reason why the film works so well is not the slightly humdrum script, but the central comedic performances. Murray is fantastic as Bob, a highly annoying character that you end up liking. However, the unsung hero is Richard Dreyfuss as Dr Marvin; he is excellent as a man driven crazy by Bob's incessant nature. The chalk and cheese comedy double act is a staple of comedy and when they are done as well as this you can see why. This is an excellent comedy that has heart, laughs and great performances.Overall rating: 9 out of 10.

calvinnme In fact, it is such light entertainment it is one of the few films that mental hospitals will let their patients watch! And no, I don't know this because I was an inmate.It's the story of two men - Bob and Dr.Leo Marvin. Bob is a man so tied up in his obsessive compulsions he can barely move. Thus he works at home in NYC and lives a simple life. However, he does see the value of therapy and apparently has been through a number of psychiatrists, all of whom he pesters to the point that they pass him off to someone else and leave town.The latest doctor to be duped into taking Bob (Bill Murray) as a patient is Dr. Leo Marvin (Richard Dreyfuss). He has precisely one session with Bob, gives him a copy of his latest book - "Baby Steps", and tells him he will see him next month because he is going on vacation. This sends Bob into a panic because the one constant in his life has been his tenacious hold on his series of psychiatrists. Bob's decision - he will "baby step" his way to New Hampshire and go on vacation where Dr. Marvin is.Now you see, Bob is actually quite likable to anybody who is NOT a psychiatrist, and he quickly bonds to Dr. Marvin's family and even helps the Marvins' son with some of his hang-ups in a way that Leo has never been able to do. You also have to realize that, like Bob, Leo is a guy with a lot of rigid rules about everything himself. In many ways he is as hung up as Bob is, but in socially acceptable ways. The result is that Bob violating all of Dr. Marvin's rules slowly drives Dr. Marvin nuts, while basically adopting Dr. Marvin's family makes Bob much better.I'll let you watch and see how this all turns out. Let me just say that this is not One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - it is a comedy for the entire family and a very good one at that. A ten year old could watch it and not be stressed. Kids much younger than that could watch it, but they just might not get it. Highly recommended.
