gary-444 A film that over reaches itself in ambition despite having a good Director, John "Hamburger Hill" Irven at the helm, and a good story to work with, the battle of Hurtgen Forest which preceded the Battle of the Bulge. However two obstacles become insurmountable, a puny budget, and a terrible script.Made in 1998, it attempts to be gritty and realistic, but the dialogue does not feel contemporary, and the action sequences are unconvincing with close up gore shots used to try to compensate. The battle scenes cannot match Saving Private Ryan, nor the epic sweep of The Thin Red Line. Irven is simply not good enough to reprise Kubrick's success with similar limitations in Full Metal Jacket.Ultimately the film does not go anywhere. The frailties of men in battle, once shown, dull after a while. The failings in US Command strategy are only hinted at. Combine a fuzzy story and bad dialogue and you have a formula for creating characters which are half formed and unlikeable, which is what we have here. When you make a film fifty years after the event it really needs to say something, to shed some light on a hitherto unilluminated corner – this does neither.
Santonamor This movie had everything a war movie needs. It had dialog that fit into war well and it had action that was perfect for war. You could easily see the emotion of war because it was portrayed so well. The battle scenes had so much detail, it made it seem so real. The battle showed what soldiers had to do, even if they didn't want to. The movie showed facial expression that also showed emotion. The movie had action that also showed emotion. The dialog expressed other emotions of war.The one problem I had was the music urning some of the battles Overall it is a great movie that I would see again.
Lil Wayne This is a great war movie. It depicts how the men feel about the tasks at hand. Sgt Manning displays his feelings about the situation right to his superiors, who tell him that he has no say in the matter. He has great leadership qualities but displays them in ways that make him seem barbaric. This movie is made with the materials they had and was done well, the firework explosions were a bit awkward. This movie is realistic in a way that American men can be hit by bullets. In most was movies you find that most of the men always "dodge bullets" or something like that. His squad develops to be a great one. The battle of the bulge started a few days after this Hurtgen Forrest battle. That is why you never really here about this battle. The acting was superior to that of Midway but it matched that of Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan. This movie also showed how in the war, men cracked and went crazy.
Cookie Monster At the beginning of the movie was are shown that Manning is a selfish soldier who isn't very loyal to his squad. Manning is shown to have excellent natural skills and is promoted for them even though he doesn't want to be promoted. In other war movies American soldiers are shown to have loyalty and bravery. During this miserable time all soldiers didn't act this way they were all wanting to return home without fighting. In the battles in the movie the U.S. is extremely outnumbered, don't have any advantages and is getting pounded by artillery and tanks. Sanderson in the beginning is a coward who is scarred of fighting. At the end Sanderson becomes a brave soldier and is very effective in the renegade assault. Once Manning is promoted he shows bravery and loyalty as he leads his troops on a mission to take out the tanks and artillery. Manning gave his life at the battle and Sanderson showed the same act as Manning did in the opening scene. Overall I give this movie a 9 out of ten. It showed how each soldier's life changed after experiencing the misery at the battle. One complaint was the music in the movie is didn't fit the movie. It sounded like peter and the wolf the music should be more fitting to the time that the movie was made.
