joshgibbs-35276 I saw the entire first season and was fairly disappointed in the end. The story line doesn't develop in a pace and unified direction. Too many distractions and no thread to pull the plot thru the end. There are a couple of main underlying lines but the they don't develop coherently and lacks focus. Other than that I love the meticulous decor, wardrobe and sets. The acting is also very good. Its just not my taste in the end. No enough intrigue and mystery. lot of porn and edgy life styles in the 20's. One more thing, i don't know much about the 20's music, but I would bet the portrayal of music and dance in the night clubs are too strange and out of place for the period. it more felt like a David Lynch movie than historically accurate.
ppeddrrossa This is definately one of the best tv series I have watched in a long time. Set in pre-Nazi Berlin, it shows us a little about those obscure years between WWI and WWII in which Berlin was a liberal and vibrant city but where much was cooking in social an political terms. The acting is amazing, the plot is intriguing and the production is superb! I'm so thrilled to have found that more seasons are to come and so happy Germany is producing such great stuff.
s3276169 An atmosphere of 20's chic permeates Babylon Berlin. Its a detective tale at its heart that manages to capture a decade that celebrated a newfound freedom that was not repeated until the 1960's. There's a real sense of flamboyance and decadence, that's colourful., celebratory and sexually promiscuous. Overlapping this is a delicately constructed story line that mixes a detective tale, with political intrigue and cultism/militarism. The latter the earliest murmurs of an inflexible embryonic nationalism which will usher in an era of Nazism which is very much at odds with 20's Berlin.Rounding out this series is well crafted narrative, sensational sets and deeply human characterisations. The key protagonists in Babylon Berlin are flawed. There are no hero's simply people going about their lives. This series does not shy away from the confusion and mess that make up much of peoples lives. It embraces it in a simple, honest way that makes this series utterly immersive. There are two version of this series I'm aware of. One is dubbed and the other uses subs. My advice go for the subs version. Somehow something of the essence of the series is lost with the voice overs. A brilliant example of what exceptional writing, directing and acting can accomplish. 10/10 from me.
hamlet-16 Babylon Berlin is simply great television ... visually and aurally stunning ... historically accurate and brilliantly acted.I am not even going to start to discuss the plot. It is too complex and multi-layered for simple explanation and I am sure you can find better plot discussions here and elsewhere. There is a film made in Berlin over that summer of 1929 .. the exact time frame of the series, called "People on Sunday". Sequences of this film are shown when our characters go to the movies adding a just one minute detail in a series full of details. It shows a lost world ...soon to tumble over the precipice. As in Bergman's "The Serpents Egg" the thunderstorm that is Nazism is looming. But Hitler is mentioned only in passing ... in 1929 he was a small feature of German politics. The sense of doom is however palpable ... like the passengers on the Titanic they do not know what lies ahead.... sadly we do.Do not miss this series. This is very adult television at its absolute best.
