The probation officer abuses Wilhelm, who ultimately reacts by killing him and running. Viktor is expelled from the partisans for being a Jew. He crosses paths with Friedhelm, who kills his commanding officer, so Viktor can escape. After the German army falls apart, Friedhelm dies while leading a group of German militia, sacrificing himself to make his troops surrender. Charlotte is captured by the Soviets and becomes a nurse for them. Greta is executed by the Nazi authorities for her speech crimes. Finally, the war ends in 1945, and the three survivors, Wilhelm, Viktor, and Charlotte, meet in the same pub as before and grieve together.

A Different War

The invasion is being pushed back by the Russians, causing high casualties for the Germans. Wilhelm gets wounded and left for dead. When he wakes up, instead of going back to the base, he finds a cabin by a lake and lives on his own for a few weeks. He is discovered by the German Army and sentenced to death for desertion. Friedhelm is sent back home, but seeing his father's disappointment with Wilhelm's apparent death, and lack of appreciation for his survival, he enlists again. Viktor escapes the Germans and joins a group of Polish partisans, but tries to conceal his Jewish race because they hate Jews. Charlotte feels despair over Wilhelm's apparent death and starts an affair with a military doctor. Greta visits the front-line and becomes disillusioned by what she discovers there. She is arrested and thrown into prison for making remarks in public that disapprove of the war and the Nazi regime.

1941. Shortly before the German invasion of the Soviet Union, five close friends have a party in Berlin. The brothers Wilhelm and Friedhelm are respectively an officer and enlisted man in the military. Viktor is a Jew who works as a tailor. Charlotte has just passed her examination to become a military nurse. Greta is a beautiful bartender who wishes to become a famous singer. The friends are hopeful that they will meet again by Christmas. Wilhelm and Friedhelm witness some early victories as the German army heads toward Moscow. Charlotte gets used to seeing blood as she works near the front-line. Greta sleeps with a major in the Gestapo to advance her career as a singer, and to obtain documents for Viktor to flee to New York City, since the rights of Jews are being diminished. However, Viktor is arrested by the Gestapo and is put on a train.

Reviews

Jack Penman-Reid Watched this series on Netflix after watching a few clips of it on youtube and being impressed. This series is literally the only other thing I've seen apart from Downfall which successfully portrays the war from the German side. It does contain some great action but it's not overly heavy on it and the action is more there to further the narrative than for sheer entertainment value. Generation War does not shy away from the atrocities committed by the German army nor does it try to make it's characters seem exempt from the crimes committed by the Nazi's during the war. I found each of the 4 characters interesting and memorable with the exception of Greta. I really liked the way throughout the series it always shows how far they are from a destination. Starting 700 KM away from Moscow and ending up within just 50 KM of it. Then as Germany is losing the war you get to see how close the Red Army is to Berlin. I was happy with the ending and thought it was satisfying. The score is really well done and I'd definitely recommend giving the soundtrack a listen. Overall I thought Generation War was a refreshing new perspective on World War 2 as we get to see it from Germany's perspective and not just through the eyes of soldiers but of German nurses, Jews and other types and how the war effected them. Definitely give it a watch. Absolute fantastic.
zed-34276 This series is excellent if one views it as the witness of a minority of skeptical, unconvinced Germans who did not buy into the "rassenkrieg." Since innumerable eulogies in film of Danish, Dutch and French resistance movements rely on the same understanding it is hard to understand why this would not be acceptable from a German perspective. The emphasis on the total loss and unraveling of human existence in this series, compared to the usual nationalistic nonsense produced on this subject makes this a very, very good series. Anyone looking for a comparison in quality needs look no further than the product of modern Russian film companies.
kgianforti First of all, people seem to get extremely upset because of historical inaccuracies. Remember people, this is about a WAR. There will never be a movie that perfectly reflects what happened in a war whether you were an American, German, civilian, etc. Even with veterans/survivors sitting and helping the writers WRITE the script, it will never truly reflect what happened because everyone involved all had their own experience and you can never bundle those experiences into one movie perfectly. No one can ever fully understand what those people went through and the ones who went through it can probably never fully describe their experiences/emotions/thoughts. I loved this movie. I loved that it was from the German perspective. I was on the edge of my seat practically the entire movie. I would highly recommend it to anyone. It is definitely for adult viewers.
Lori Sloan First off... I don't think this contains any major spoilers, but if you want to be totally surprised by the mini-series, don't read it.This mini-series makes you realize that not all Germans were pro-Hitler/ anti-Jew. That many, many Germans were simply fighting for their country and ended up very disillusioned with Hitler and his lies. With his insanity and hatred. That blind loyalty to anything can be incredibly dangerous. That war is more Hellish than most of us civilians can ever imagine. The acting/ costumes/ sets were great. The characters did not develop they way I thought that they would. They all certainly aged in four years... they developed depth and wisdom that given a chance, they might give back for their innocence. It certainly didn't end the way I thought that it would. I wish there had been more to it. I wanted to see them after the war... I wanted to see how they readjusted to German society. Did they stay? Did they move? As soon as it was over, I was sad... I really wanted it to keep going for a while.
