Kath & Kim is a character-driven Australian television situation comedy series. The series was created by, and is written by Jane Turner and Gina Riley who play the title characters: a suburban mother and daughter with a dysfunctional relationship. The series main characters consist of Kath Day-Knight, a cheerful 50-year-old woman, her self-indulgent daughter Kim Craig, Kath's boyfriend and second husband, the metrosexual Kel Knight, as well as Kim's estranged husband Brett Craig and her lonely, overweight "second best friend" Sharon Strzelecki. The series is set in the fictional suburb of Fountain Lakes in Melbourne. It is primarily filmed in Patterson Lakes. The series was conceived by Turner and Riley in the early 1990s as a weekly segment of the Australian comedy series Fast Forward. The skit was then developed into a full-series. The first series of Kath & Kim premiered on ABC TV on 16 May 2002, with three further series following, while a television movie, entitled Da Kath and Kim Code, was broadcast nationally on 25 November 2005. Kath & Kim has garnered much critical acclaim since its debut, winning two Logie Awards, for "Outstanding Comedy Programme" and the "Best Television Drama Series" award at the Australian Film Institute Awards. In Australia, it has become a pop culture phenomenon, and is a success with audiences nationwide. Internationally, the series has spawned a cult fanbase, and in 2006 it was announced an American version of the series would be produced, to air on NBC. Riley and Turner served as executive producers on the US version. The American version was also picked up by Seven, which debuted the program on 12 October 2008, just three days after its debut in the United States.

Reviews

tatterwip Kath & Kim appeared on UK TVscreensa few years ago now, and I was drawn in from the start. It's a great comedy in every way - Rounded characters, cracking scripts and some classic comedy surprises. The show surrounds Kath and her daughter Kim who, after a bust-up with her fiancé, moves back in with her mother who herself is on the brink on moving in her new man, Kel - wonder butcher and creator of some legendary sausage combos. Most of the time though all does not go well for the pair, who's personalities constantly grate on each other. No of which is helped by "friend" Sharon, a net-ball playing foil who is always burdened with some injury. At first I thought it would be the type of sit-com that would play hopelessly on the Aussie stereotypes, but it really doesn't. All the characters have a great depth to them (if thats not too grotesque a phrase to use!) At the time is was a beautifully fresh comedy for the BBC who had be hit by a slump of pretty poor-to-no-existent home grown comedy. For this I have to rate Kath & Kim high ... A first class comedy and well deserving of it's three series (lets hope we get all of them over here in the UK soon!)
royu Kath & Kim is the best Australia sitcom probably since Mother & Son, but to widen it's appeal it needs a bit of a work over. It's funny, no doubt, the show has got a lot of potential, although it's missing out on some basic professionalism. For starters the scripts are a bit hit and miss, and it's the same with the acting. Some of the jokes are brilliant but for every brilliant joke there's a shocker, and some of the lines are delivered very well while others are delivered very poorly. Glen Robbins is a terrific visual comedian though. If the actors were of Frasier/Blackadder standard it would completely transform the show.Despite being rough around the edges, I actually like it. It's good to see some good Australian humour on TV again. And yes I know it's tight budget is the reason it isn't polished.Definitely worth a look if you've never seen it, just don't look at the details.
chuffnobbler To British eyes, Kath & Kim is unique. It's like a cross between Ab Fab (back when it was funny, before it became self-indulgent) and The Royle Family. Spiky, sharp edged, satirical and screamingly funny, Kath & Kim is completely addictive, I have almost completely worn out my DVDs, and am hopeful that series three will arrive before too long. It will take the UK by storm, just as it has Australia.Running gags, catchphrases (look at moiye!), daft stories, mad costumes and a genuinely high-energy, gag-per-moment atmosphere. Best bits? Kath's hen night. Kath's wedding. Sharon's boyfriend. Kath's poodle. Kel's wedding sausage. The Irish dancing sequence. Brett and his boss ("cardonay!"). The baby shower. Kath and Kim meeting "themselves" while shopping. Sandy Freckle. The 70s and 80s flashbacks in the last episode of series two. In fact, it's all so good, so funny and so surprising, I just can't praise it enough. "I'm not a housewife, I'm a hornbag!".
Samual Tompson As an international journilist I am increasingly interested with television shows that represent Australian society. I have always wondered to what extent your typical stereotype, bloke and sheila really exist in our everyday life. Previously i had never come across a show quite like Kath and Kim. And although i am not proud to admit it, it has become evident to me that the Kath and Kim stereotype is a very realistic representation of the majority of Australians! What makes Kath and Kim so funny is in fact the irony in the show. Who can honestly say that they don't know a neigbour, auntie or a friend who don't share some of kath and kim characteristics. The situation they are in is very common for typical aussies, living in the suburbs. How many of us are obsessed about being trim, are in disfunctional relationships are chain smokers. Even the bad fashion sense, cheap slang and horribly unromatic attempts to win our lovers reflect on our unique society and are exclusivley Australian ( even if we don't like to admit it!) Kath and Kim is a reality check for us australians showing us how we really are. It is my impression Kath and Kim best represents the reality of australian life, whether we like it or not.
