Lassie is a Canadian television series which aired from 1997 to 1999 on YTV in Canada and Sunday nights on the Animal Planet network in the United States, as a modified remake of the original Lassie series about a boy and his faithful dog. As with previous Lassie TV versions and several movies dating back to the original Lassie Come Home movie of 1943, the star was Lassie, a trained Rough Collie. Not to be confused with a previous, syndicated follow-up series entitled The New Lassie which aired 1989–1991, this Canadian-produced Lassie series starred Corey Sevier as 13-year-old Timmy Cabot in the fictional town of Hudson Falls, Vermont. The show was filmed in Quebec by Cinar Inc.. In this series' story line, Timmy and his recently widowed mother, Dr. Karen Cabot, move to Hudson Falls, where Karen takes over a veterinary practice. In the first season, Lassie was played by "Howard", an eighth generation collie descended from "Pal", the dog in the original 1943 movie Lassie Come Home. As with all previous Lassie movies and television series beginning with Pal, Howard was owned and trained by Weatherwax Trained Dogs, founded by brothers Frank and Rudd Weatherwax. Midway through production, Cinar replaced Howard with a non-Pal descended dog. Following Lassie fan protests, "Hey Hey", son of Howard and a ninth-generation direct descendent of Pal, was brought in to assume the role of Lassie for the final thirteen episodes of the show.

Wolfhawk838 I loved the series and would love to have a copy of it for my nephews. They are animal lovers and devour animal planet, discovery channel, etc. Did anyone copy the series? Could I buy it from you? Or could you make a copy. I cannot find the series anywhere I look. Does anyone know how to get it on DVD or VHS? The original series early in the last century, in the 1950's was cute and well done. And I see it is available periodically in catalogs. There have been movies, too, but the one with Corey Sevier is updated and more modern with current situations to hold the interest of a child in the present day. With all the violence and seriously bad influence of TV shows out there, this one is a keeper and should be available.
klaseriksson79 I've seen this Lassie series a few years ago and now it's being broadcast on a different network in Sweden. Great acting by all characters, a cute dog and handsome stories contribute to the overall quality of this version. The beautiful surroundings is also a reason why I enjoy watching it, the nature reminds me of Sweden. There is not much information about the actors on the internet except for Corey which surprises me a bit, maybe it's because it's a Canadian series with non U.S. people involved. I wonder why it didn't take place in Canada when that's where they shot it?To sum it up, Lassie 1997 is one of those productions I'd have liked to step into in real life....
studedude2004 This was a really good show; it stayed true to the original series, but updated it in a million subtle ways. The main character was still called Timmy, but Corey Sevier played him as a modern kid who just happened to have a fantastic dog. The rest of the cast was solid too -- Susan Almgren as Mom, Walter Massey as Doc Stewart, Tod Fennel as Timmy's best friend, Nathalie Vansier as --gasp! -- Timmy's girlfriend, and Chip Chiupka as the tenderhearted junkyard guy. There was a lot of humour in the stories; the series dealt with a lot of issues a normal kid would face -- like bullies, school problems, social issues -- but when it did straight dog-adventure stories, it did them with a big wink to the old series. Timmy actually falls in a hole, and Lassie goes for help -- but not in a way you'd ever expect. There were a lot of animal stories -- Timmy's Mom is a vet -- and they usually took some pretty strange twists; a baby goose thought Lassie was its Mom; Timmy and Jeff tried to impress a girl by raising chickens, but Hank's hawk kept killing them; Nathalie lost a boa-constrictor; Timmy and his Mom mistook a bat-infestation for ghosts; and my all time favourite, only Lassie could communicate with the aliens responsible for a series of crop circles!
Zane-05 I like this version of Lassie a lot since I'm half Canadian and its a Canadian production. The writing was really good and all the actors had the accents down cold. It was so cute when Corey Sevier got to kiss Natalie at the end of the series; you got the feeling he wanted to do that all along. I like watching Corey in Little Men on Pax TV also; he's a good actor.
