Reviews

BlackJack_B This is one of the funniest T.V. shows I have seen in a long time. A mix of Monty Python, Kids In The Hall and toilet humor, Little Britain is laugh-out-loud hilarious.Matt Lucas and David Walliams create some of the most memorable characters in a long time. Yes, the show runs their characters into the ground and it becomes repetitive but when they are fresh, these caricatures are winners. Some of my favorites:Marjorie Dawes, the hypocritical leader of the Fat Fighters, who calls her customers fat despite being overweight herself.Sebastian Love, the openly gay aide to the Prime Minister of the U.K.Emily Howard, the Victorian era cross-dresser.Vicky Pollard, the fast-talking teenage delinquent.Daffyd Thomas, who claims to be the only gay in the village when there seems to be plenty of them around him.Kenny Craig, master hypnotist. There's other characters I like, though some of them aren't as funny. It can be hit-or-miss.The show also relies on a lot of toilet humor and tastelessness at times, seemingly in the later seasons.Still, it's a tremendous show. I hope to see Season 3 on Netflix soon. However, I would definitely not allow kids to see this show. It's R- rated to be sure.
kittenkrushers I saw this series when it first premiered in 2003, and I really liked it! It had characters like Des Kaye and Ray McCooney, who were actually quite funny. I liked the show a lot, and couldn't wait for it to return. Then series 2 arrived. I was shocked by the drop in quality. No more clever, versatile characters like Ray McCooney. Repetitive, disgusting (and not in a funny way) characters like Bubbles De Vere and that puking woman (can't remember her name!) were the focus now. Even classic characters like Lou and Andy had become shadows of themselves.I saw series 3, in hopes it would improve, but to my dismay it got even worse! I left the series with a bitter taste in my mouth, and went off to re-watch a true classic (Brass Eye).I saw the rating of 8.0, and was amazed at how high it was. One great series, followed by two god-awful ones, does not deserve something higher than a 4.My advice, buy series 1 if you're curious. Save your money on the rest (including Little Britain USA).Rating 4/10
Syl Little Britain really surprised me and entertained me at the same time with Lucas and WIlliams's talents to spoof famous British figures like Dame Barbara Cartland. Oh yes, the two men do other bits of British life like the guy and his apparently disabled friend who is wheelchair bound but not who picks the wrong things and chooses to not go to the bathroom. Oh yes, he can't read neither. Then there is Emily Howard, the badly dressed Southern British transvestite who considers herself to be a lady. We get nice shots of the British seaside. Then there is the only gay guy in a small English village who refuses to believe that there are other gays there too. They also have the wonderful Tom Baker from Doctor Who and Anthony Head from those coffee commercials with his wife for Taster's Choice playing prime minister. Baker is the show's narrator. The show is overall quite a great comedy of characters and fun to watch and re-watch about British life. Too bad, the film industry in Britain does not have the same ability to create the same momentum. That's because British television comedies appeal to a certain audience including Anglophiles like myself. My biggest complaint was that there are only 6-8 episodes per season on British television while American television has an average of 18-27 episodes for each show. Little Britain does a fantastic job of spoofing British life without being too cruel or too mean but remember that it's flattering to have your life spoofed for the public. I love the Kelsey Grammar School and Steven Spielberg Hospital as proof that American culture has invaded the country with Grammar's humor and Spielberg's movies.
whitezombi I am completely and utterly baffled by the runaway success of this show. I had heard so much hype about it that when I finally saw the first episode, I expected to be laughing to the point of tears. Instead, not only did I fail to laugh a single time, I actually groaned in disbelief on several occasions. The jokes were plain and simply awful. The premise of this show is that it offers a hilarious caricature of life and people in Britain. This is only partially the case. Little Britain's characters do indeed resemble exaggerated versions of people in the UK, and they do mimic some Britishisms such as chavy 'yeah, but no, but yeah'. However, the characters are more like poor impersonations than true caricatures. And they most certainly are not hilarious. There is no intelligence, depth, wit, sarcasm or insight into anyone or anything. Instead, sketches rely on repetition of lame catch-phrases and complete gross out humor. Even then, the gross-out is so poorly done when compared to shows such as South-Park or Family Guy in which disgusting scenes are used in context and with intelligence. This show cannot possibly appeal to you unless you have a sense of humor which stopped developing in primary school (or you actually are in primary school). If you want a proper example of funny and witty caricatures of Britian, check out the Catherine Tate Show. The lewd and crude grandmother character is guaranteed to have you in stitches. For other great Brit comedies, check out the Green Wing, the Office, Black Adder and of course, the legendary Monty Python crew.
