Monster Squad is a television series that aired Saturday mornings on NBC from 1976-1977 that is unrelated to the later movie of the same name. The series stars Fred Grandy as Walt, a criminology student working as a night watchman at "Fred's Wax Museum". To pass the time, Walt built a prototype "Crime Computer" hidden in a large stone sarcophagus near an exhibit of legendary monsters. When Walt plugged in his computer, "oscillating vibrations" brought to life the wax statues of Dracula, the Wolfman who here was named "Bruce W. Wolf", and Frankenstein's Monster who was referred to as "Frank N. Stein" in the credits. The monsters, wanting to make up for the misdeeds of their pasts, became superhero crimefighters who used their unique abilities to challenge and defeat various supervillains. In most episodes, Walt would send the monsters out to investigate crimes and fight the villains while monitoring the activities from the wax museum via the Crime Computer, presumably because his job required him to be at the wax museum at all times. However, Walt would sometimes join the climactic battle with his comrades in some episodes and come to the rescue when needed.

Reviews

Bill357 Who would have thought that a show with Dracula, the Wolf Man, and Frankenstein's monster teaming up to "save the world" would be so bad. Then again, what should I expect from a 70's Saturday morning show? When I read that this was from the makers of the original Batman TV series I thought this might be good campy fun but it wasn't. It was horrible! This actually makes Batman look highly sophisticated.Monster Squad tries hard to emulate the success of Batman ten years earlier but the writers don't seem to have enough imagination to bring us memorable scenarios or villains. The first episode's villain (Queen Bee) is probably the most annoying I've seen outside of a cartoon ever. Each episode appears to only have two or three cardboard cutout sets where all the "action" takes place. Speaking of the action, every episode ends with a jaw-droppingly awful fight where the monsters defeat the super-villain's henchmen. The Wolf Man, Dracula, and Frankenstein's Monster seem to just stand there and flail their arms while the people they fight fall all over the scenery! It's so bad it makes the fighting in the Batman series look like a John Woo movie! The only thing even remotely enjoyable about this TV series is the performance by the actor that plays Dracula. He delivers his corny lines with an expression on his face that seems to be saying "What the hell am I doing here?" They should have put him in a better show.
hijoderayo Monster Squad TV series on DVD would be fun for kids and adults to see once again or for the first time. It was a clean Saturday morning kids show that spun Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, and the Wolf Man in a positive light by fighting crime.Though I liked the Monster Squad movie very much, it had too much swearing for kids 12 and under to hear. However, the TV show that shares a similar title, featured the trio of monster waxed figures coming to life. Plus, one got to see Fred Grandy play the wax museum's janitor at the beginning of his Hollywood career. Please release Monster Squad (1976) TV series on DVD. It would be a gem to watch. - Thor
multivox I remember this show when I was a kid! Its combination of movie monsters as superheroes kept kids interested. It's tongue in cheek humor had adults laughing. It was both a kid's show and a satire. It reminded me a lot of the old "Batman" tv series, and for good reason: many of those who worked on the '60s tv classic also had a hand in creating "The Monster Squad". This show starred a pre-"Love Boat" Fred(Gopher)Grandy as a night watchman of a horror movie wax museum who brought to life the statues of Frankinstein, Dracula, and the Wolf Man to fight crime. I've looked into finding the episodes, but it seems that NBC has them locked away and won't release them to video. If anyone knows of anybody who worked on the show or any of the higherups at NBC, please let me know how to contact them. It would be great to see these episodes again...and I'm not the only one who feels this way!
