Reviews

merniesmith I loved Numb3rs just about all the way through. It started going downhill a bit, though, when they ran that Charlie-lost-his-security-clearance stuff through episode after episode, though. It became hard to hear him, much less understand him. He spoke in more of a monotone, than he ever did before. And he and Don got too philosophical, IMO!! The cop drama needs to focus on catching the bad guys, it seems to me!The episodes with Edgerton (Lou Diamond Phillips) were always terrific. He added a whole different angle ... precision thinking and precision shooting! Loved those episodes.Overall, it was marvelous, though. It'd be fun to have it back ... if they can get off this brooding philosophical stuff, that is!
Justin R Numb3rs starts out with a good premise - using math to solve crimes - and it uses that device effectively in differentiating itself from the other crime-dramas en vogue. The first 2-1/2 seasons are pretty good with each episode and it's story being self-contained, plot and clue development pretty good, standard action and chases, and a reasonable epilogue. Then half way thru Season 3, the writers/producers began tinkering with the the show and what had worked. They began introducing arching story lines, not the least annoying of which was the math genius's new love interest. That and the actress couldn't act. And at this point, the show jumps the shark. And as the series progressed, they began giving her more screen time - really irritating. Then they dumped Farr's character, Morrow and Sumika's bubdding interest and brought back one character they were right to get rid of, and finally half wrote out Peter MacNichols' character. Basically, they messed up a good thing. Oh, and they started getting all Liberal agenda on viewers at that point too.Overall it's a good show, and if they had just stuck to what worked when they started, it'd have remained fun. Rob Morrow, Judd Hirsh, David Krumholz, Alimi Ballard, Diane Farr, Dylan Bruno, and Aya Sumika really gelled as a team. It's not a bad series for entertainment, until season 3.
magisterfabrum I do confess that my vote is a deliberately excessive one: 8 stars would have been more in accordance with my sincere opinion. As for the science present in the show, even I, a math dead loss, realize that often "crazy equations" (Don Epps, "Dirty Bomb", 1st season) are displayed, or that Professor Fleinhardt's character is too mystic even for a theoretical physicist, whereas he blunders once and again in basic points of physics and astronomy (in "And the Winner Is", 6th season, he speaks about a star called M170, when such a thing doesn't exist: M catalog includes 110 objects only, and none is a simple star). On the other hand, what's left to say about performance, direction, storyline ups and downs or production issues that hasn't been said in the preceding reviews? However, emotionally I love this show, and morally I welcome it in a time when a pseudoscience flood is drowning TV: "Ghost Whisperer", "Medium", "Supernatural", loads of "Stargates", the everlasting "X Files" threat... Ugh!
tr_s As an engineer, I must say this show's first season started out very promising. Most of the applied mathematics were somewhat plausible, and the relationships portrayed between the Eppes brothers and father gave the show an interesting edge. But after the first season, the show started degrading, heavily. Most of the mathematics and technology used in crime solving is now utter gibberish and very laughable to all people involved in science & technology for real. The involvement from the actors still feels okay and I can imagine a fair amount of money is still going into producing each episode, but in the end, this has degraded to a very unpleasantly tasting dish which is a mix of a grade C action thriller and CSI style cop show.If you are gonna watch it, go for only the first season and possibly parts of the second. Thereafter I would not waste my time. Myself, I gave the show up midway through season 3.Season 1 - 8 stars Season 2 - 5 stars Season 3 - 3 starsLet's sum that up to 4 stars. Since Charlie doesn't know his math anymore, I won't bother with the correctness of mine either.
