yeah1980 I started this with no expectations, actually all other Amazon Prime Video series did not get into me that much... OK, we are in the '80, so if you are born exactly in 1980 like me you are going to have a lot of revival moments, this is not sweating '80 like some other piece of TV streaming show (cough... stranger, cough... things, cough...), but there is a lot of quotes and reference everywhere. Then the whole plot is pivoting around niceness, and this is heart- warming, too many series are around just bad and evil characters, here you will find comfort after a hard work day. But the most important thing is: Time Travel. When I watch this show, time goes faster than ever! It is unbelievable how an episode slides smoothly to the end, while you think you are actually in the middle of it. This is actually the most sophisticated magic entertainment can do, and it must mean something if this happens.
Charles Herold (cherold) There were some great teen movies in the 80s, like The Breakfast Club and Better Off Dead. There were also a lot of really stupid movies about sex-obsessed boys "coming of age," and based on the pilot, that's what Red Oaks is. And my 80s nostalgia does not cover that particular sub genre. Why is the movie set in the 80s? Perhaps because it would make it more appropriate to have the ordinary-looking leading boy date a girl out of his league and make it look like his tubby stoner friend might hook up with a really hot girl (I can only hope that doesn't actually happen, but who knows). And as cover to make a movie which can, with no excuses, give all the personality and angst to the boys while the girls fulfill their role as cardboard cutouts with hot bodies. All of which I could put up with if the show were actually funny, but outside of an amusing opening scene where a heart attack causes an unfortunate series of confessions and some well-delivered lines from a tennis pro there's really nothing of note in the pilot. Maybe the rest of the series improves, but as someone who preferred 16 Candles to Caddyshack, I don't care to find out.
arampapik Show takes place in the 80's. If you've grow up during that time, you will feel a sense of nostalgia while watching this show. Big camcorders, no cell phones, big hair, colorful sunglasses, denim, aerobics, etc. Kind of makes me want to re-live the times. Show is very well made. Great cinematography , good selection of actors, lots of settings, easy to follow plot with just the right amount of side stories going on. I would re-watch the show... can't say that about many shows. Can't wait till season 3.
daveupbat I love this show, one of the better shows on TV, it's a instant classic, it takes you back to the days of Caddyshack, but without the slapstick humor... the subtle comedy and nice blend of a drama is the perfect mix. The love stories and awkward moments are the perfect mix to take you back to what life was like in the 1980's. It's so good, I wish the episodes were an hour long! I really love the cast, and the great young actors they chose.. everyone does an outstanding job! I am hopeful for a season 3, 4 and beyond... this is one of the great shows which I hope doesn't end anytime soon. It's really easy to get invested in all the different stories as the character development is well rounded and definitely keeps you invested. It's very easy to find yourself identifying with each of the different personalities and what we all thought back then. Please bring us more seasons!
