daviddaveinternational I just bought the entire series on DVD. One of my better investments. Anyone who loves Leslie Nielsen's "Police Squad" series will truly love this farce on Dirty Harry. Nothing but fun violence. Like Harry Callahan, Sledge Hammer seems to always happen upon robberies in progress while eating something including a "sushi dog" (yummy!) I'm surprised Hammer didn't say: "Nobody, I mean nobody puts ketchup on a sushi dog!" Most of the guest stars are no-names but you'll recognize some of them even if you don't read the credits. In one episode Hammer deals with a black widow Cal Worthington-type used car salesmen-husband serial killer played by an unknown actress. I was thinking Carol Burnett would have been the perfect actress for that one. I guess maybe her show was on a different network or she was too busy. I'm sure she loved the comedy aspect of the show though. You've got to buy the series now available on DVD. Trust me. I know what I'm doing.
drew_atreides ...the year was 1986. My dad introduced me, then 8 years old, to a little show he found about a guy who loved violence and had a propensity for talking to and sleeping with his gun. (My dad also introduced me to MONTY PYTHON around this time, too.)When other kids at school were talking about the latest episode of Mr. Belvedere, ALF and the Cosby Show, I would always bring up "last night on SLEDGE HAMMER!"... Every kid would cower in fear, stating "oh my mom doesn't let me watch that. He talks to his gun!"Beyond being a cool dad, i believe my father must have had the greatest sense of humour known to man. The gags in SLEDGE HAMMER! were beyond anything i had ever seen before. I picked it up on DVD all these many years later, and there's stuff NOW that cracks me up like nothing else currently on TV. A true classic that should get more credit then it does for being on the cutting edge of comedy."Every breath you take. Every move you make. I'll be watching you....That's police talk."
OlYankee Probably the best TV satire of everything 1980s, which is astounding, since it premiered near the middle of the decade. I knew people back then who were Sledge, for real! Poor Anne-Marie Martin as Dori Doreau: imagine thinking that computers could help you do your work, when all you need is Gun.David Rasche was perfect as the maniacally serious Sledge. Harrison Page actually allowed one to identify with a boss who had a report who was, well, impossible. You knew any of Trunk's victories would be short-lived.The movie/contemporary situation send-ups were all wonderful and many still ring true re current events.Best line was at the end of Season One: Trunk: Hammer!
Rob_Taylor So we should be thankful they did it when they had the chance. Today's politically-correct nonsense would have people up in arms about a show that glorified violence and had a "shoot first, ask questions later" mentality. To be fair, though, Sledgehammer was not that bad. There was no gore and little sleaze on display. David Rasche (hugely underrated actor) gave the role just the right amount of manic-ness that it needed to be funny, but not so much that it became ridiculous. Not that Sledge's antics themselves weren't ridiculous, but you know what I mean...Much like the later "Brisco County Jr" I avoided this show when it first appeared, convinced by the name alone that it was little more than another cop show. Also like Brisco, I'm glad that I revisited it and found the joy that is Sledgehammer! Doreau (Sledge's side-kick) didn't really get to be much more than the straight-err..man to his lunacy, but there was a great deal of humour to be had from the interaction between the pair, especially the male-female differences of perspective. All in all, the show was good and deserved the run that it got (2 seasons) and probably more besides. At least, it got the chance to show what it was capable of, unlike a lot of more recent shows that get canned before the first season is done.Well worth a watch.
