GL84 Sent to a Christian reformatory school, a young teen finds that the other women there are just like her, gathered together by an ancient prophecy to open the long-closed gates to other dimensions home to ravenous demons, and that they have to stop it before they can arrive on Earth. This one was a really above-average film. One of the finer aspects of this one is the fact that this one changes the way a possession takes place which is a nice specialty. Rather than being able to take control of anyone, this one stipulates rules that the incredibly religious are off-limits, for it won't work on them. Through the use of voodoo, a pentagram and Latin spells, the demon comes forth and the victim becomes possessed which is quite different, and although it doesn't really go together since all of them conflict with each other, they do make for a fantastic scene. The location of the fighting also works, since the place is really creepy. The majority of this comes from the backstory given here that offers up a rather strong and impressive religious-based storyline that works in not only regular religious outcomes but also brings together several different setups into the main setup. Including the voodoo aspects of the scenes in the attic featuring their battle with the various students possessed by the demons which not only has the payoff from the beginning but adds in some more fun to be had with the final showdown being a long, action-packed feature that contains so many different ways to stay enjoyable that the film ultimately gets incredibly fun and exciting. Added together with the fine makeup on the ghosts as some of them can be quite shocking and get a few jolts, these here really make the film enjoyable. This one doesn't do a whole lot wrong, but there are a few problems with it. The first flaw is that the film doesn't capitalize on several key areas as well as it should. The fact that most of the gore comes from non-lethal wounds or aftermath is slightly puzzling as there's a whole amount of deaths that result from the demon jumping into another body and the previous host collapsing with nothing graphic happening. This really should've been the case where it really amps up the gore to detail the different outcomes of the demons' attacks, which really could've provided this one with some more fun to be had with the more obvious destruction of the bodies. That really could've helped the few actual deaths even more. The other missed opportunity is the closet lesbianism on display. There are a few nods here and there towards it, but hardly anything occurs of it and a little extra sleaze would've been fine. The last flaw is that the body-hopping demon is such a cliché and done to death. This little trick comes into play in other films way too often, and this one is just the same. These here keep the film down somewhat.Rated R: Graphic Language, Graphic Violence and Brief Nudity
jfgibson73 5ive Girls is the kind of movie that lets you know when a dramatic moment is happening by having one of its characters start praying. Most of it plays like an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Charmed, but with a less clever script. If you are a fan of low budget, direct to video thrillers, this won't matter because you already know what to expect.Five teen girls begin the new semester at a recently reopened Catholic School, run by a stern, icy headmistress and a weary priest. Weird things start to happen as we find out the girls have supernatural powers, while the girls begin to find out the school has a history. The story focuses on a demon being summoned by the arrival of the five girls. It turns out the headmistress is the sister of a girl who was abducted to hell 5 years ago, and the school was reopened so she could enroll students to trade for the life of the sister. The demon gets free, of course, and jumps from body to body, killing all but one character. The abrupt ending and the death of most of the characters were an unsatisfying resolution to what was a fairly entertaining movie. Like so many of these low-budget horror/exploitation films, we don't get a climax or ending good enough to make us care about the previous 85 minutes.Given between the choice of recommending it or not, I would say it was worth watching once. There was a lot of silly dialog, poor acting, and amateurish effects, but it kept me interested for at least two thirds of the running time.
boogie67 "5ive Girls" is such a run of the mill supernatural film that the concept never really garnered any interest my way. The characters are all so interchangeable and forgettable. One can walk through walls, one can heal through touch and yet I really couldn't point out which girl had which power if you asked me to. The sad fact is that the film really sells itself as a hip Gothic parade of black magic and evil and yet has the lagging pace of "Whispering Corridors." Sonoda's direction really doesn't add much to the lagging proceedings in the end, and in spite of all the attempts to spin the formula, this story has been done and much better. In a reform school of apparently only five girls, they do nothing but yap back and forth with no real substance or interesting exchanges, and the visions continue just to remind us that we're watching a horror film. We already know who the demonic entity challenging them is, and we're well aware that the girl power message will strive to defeat the demon in the end; "5ive Girls" holds no surprises, unless you've never seen the cinematic depiction of ritual humiliation of semi-clad, nubile teen-aged girls before.
nb2 Not the most original of concepts but made very watchable by seven of the most beautiful young actress ever captured in a single movie! Unusually for this genre, there is virtually no nudity and not much gore but these young actors are sexy as hell and they can all act. Jennifer Miller is stunning to look at and photographs really well while Amy Lalonde is beautiful and extremely sexy. Krysta Carter has looks that could stop the world. Every one of them showed real talent in their contrasting styles. School uniforms and Amy giving Jennifer an almighty spanking with skirt raised! Owch!! Looked quite real, followed by Jennifer on her tummy and the excellent Jordan Madley using her healing hand to make Jen's sore bottom better and the marks go away.Great fun!
