Edgar Allan Pooh . . . to fight Hitler and the Third Reich. As ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT documents, about a quarter of Americans already had been mobilized--by Hitler! NIGHT shows us U.S. singers, sailors, dock workers, auctioneers, club owners, cops, hotel clerks, moving men, defense plant foremen, bakers, bartenders, art patrons, night watchmen, bouncers, telegraph operators, pilots, etc.--all in cahoots with the Fuhrer and his minions. NIGHT revolves around a plot to sink a brand new American battleship. As singer "Leda" notes, hundreds of Nazi "Fifth Columnists" ("Fivers" for short) were embedded in each and every American city. New York had scores of traitors and spies to man most elements of the nefarious battleship plan, but the two key munition experts had to be called in from the headquarters of the Michigan Reich: Detroit. While even today most everyone is familiar with some of the more famous Wolverines for Hitler (Henry Ford, Charles Lindbergh, and the notorious Jew-cursing radio priest, Father Charles Edward Coughlin, whose still-standing shrine was just elevated to a Basilica by the current Pope!), it was the countless Common Man saboteurs under the sway of the Nazi One Per Centers (like the Detroit munition men "A. Holtmeir" and 'Hans Schroeder" here) that tacked on years and tens of thousands of gratuitous U.S. casualties to the sad history of WWII. Though NIGHT may paint an overly rosy picture of what was tantamount to a Second American Civil War, it perhaps may be excused since there was no way of knowing in 1942 that the War would drag on for so many years, prolonged by such a host of traitors. Since Rich One Per Centers such as Ford, Lindbergh, and Coughlin guided Hitler's Fifth Column in America, most of these people escaped justice and retribution Scot free after WWII ended. America's most patriotic slogan always has been, "Money talks." When it comes to high treason, Money Walks, too.
Dan Franzen (dfranzen70) All through the Night, one of Humphrey Bogart's lesser-known films, is an often-funny, tightly written spy caper wherein our antihero, playing "promoter" Gloves Donahue, finds himself in the middle of a nest of Nazis trying to sabotage a battleship in New York City.It seems that local baker Joe has been murdered by persons unknown. Then Leda (Kaaren Verne), a mysterious woman, shows up looking for Joe. Gloves, at the behest of his well-meaning Ma (Jane Darwell), looks into the matter, but soon he's suspect number one himself. What will happen when Gloves finds out who's behind Joe's murder? Who is this dizzy dame with the cool accent? And when will Gloves figure out that Nazis are involved? The answers may not surprise you.Surrounding Gloves are characters straight out of Damon Runyon or Chester Gould's Dick Tracy. His right-hand man is named Sunshine (William Demarest, not known for his sunny attitude). His gofer and second top accomplice is Barney (Frank McHugh), who throughout the film begs Gloves to give him a few minutes' leave to be with his girl - whom he marries during the movie and who's on screen for maybe five minutes. That's the life of a wiseguy. Also among Gloves' crew are a waiter (Phil Silvers) and Starchy, played by the one and only Jackie Gleason, billed with a middle initial of C. for this early role.On the bad-guy side of the ledger is ringleader Franz Ebbing (Conrad Veidt), his top man Pepi (Peter Lorre), and maybe Leda. Others, too, but they're not consequential. The ring operates out of a high-class auction house, where Sunshine and Gloves are just a tad out of place. But the dialog! Just check out some of the zingers. When Gloves spots a portrait of Hitler on the wall at the gang's headquarters - and this is before Pearl Harbor - he exclaims, "I recognize the face but I don't know where to put it. Hey, there's more here than meets the FBI!" When Barney is rebuffed again about trying to see his girl/wife, he laments having to spend his honeymoon with Sunshine, who deadpans, "Well, I can cook." It's a treat to see such tough, hardened baddies whip out such jumping lines.Essentially, this is a propaganda film made to convince America to join in the fun that would later be called World War II, but it's never over the top. It dabbles in patriotism and focuses its energy on the thrill of the spy chase and the juice of busting up terrorists. And terrorists these are, even in the modern sense, as a suicide bombing comes into play near the end. It's not one of Bogie's better-known films, but All through the Night is absolutely terrific. You tend to forget how gifted the man was at comedy (see his later We're No Angels, for example). He's got the moves, he's got the patter, he's got the girl, and he's got the moxie. Great job all around.
sol ***SPOILERS*** Humphrey Bogart as big time gambler and cheesecake lover, that's the pastry not the sexy women kind, Gloves Donahue uncovers a Nazi spy ring ring in Manhattans Yorkville section and with the help of his somewhat shady or mobbed up friends goes to put it out of business. Bogie or Gloves first got an inkling of what's was happening when his good friend and bakery owner German/American Mr.Miller, Ludwig Stossel, was found dead in his bakery with a broken neck. Mr. Miller has been working with the Nazi ring only because he has family back in Nazi Germany who's lives were endangered if he did't. It's when Mr. Miller's Nazi contact Pepi, Peter Lorrie, wanted him to go a step farther, in killing US sailors, that he refused which cost him his life! Despite Gloves efforts to alert the police to what's going on he in fact becomes their #1 suspect, in Pepi planting one of Gloves' gloves at the murder scene, in Mr. Miller's murder! As things turn out it's nightclub singer Leda Hamilton, Kaaren Verne, who also works for the Nazi spy and sabotage ring who helps Gloves out in that she finds out that her German born father who was being head hostage by the Nazis in Germany's notorious Dachau concentration camp was murdered by them. As Gloves and his friend and fellow mobster Sunsine, William Dmarest, find out from the head of the spy ring himself Ebbing, Conred Veidt, the big plan is to knock out a US Navy battleship docked in Brooklyn's Gravesend Bay. And the plan to do it is by using a motorboat loaded with high explosives with Ebbing and his fellow Nazi Pepi smashing into it, kamikaze style, at full breakneck speed blasting the ship to kingdom come! With Gloves on his own and wanted by the police he has to rely on his fellow mobsters to get the job, in stopping the motorboat attack, done all by themselves. And with time running out it would take next to a miracle for that to happen. But with Gloves Leda and the boys going into action that miracle can very well be achieved!Released on December 2, 1941 just five days before the Japansese attack on Pearl Harbor and nine days after German Furher Adolph Hitler's Declaration of War against the US the movie "All Through the Night's" release couldn't have been more timely! Even though when it was released at a time when the US & Nazi German as well as Imperial Japan were technically still at peace with each other! Even more ironic was the planned attack by Nazi fanatic Ebbing on a US Navy battleship which was eerily reminiscent of the Al-Qeada attack on the US Navy warship USS Cole sixty years later on October 12, 2000 in the Bay of Yemen on the Red Sea. Did the Al-Qeada terrorist organization get their idea to do in the USS Cole by watching the film "All Through the Night" that may have inspire them to do it?
John T. Ryan WE can well remember seeing this film about 40 years ago. It was shown over WGN TV Channel 9 here in Chicago As was their usual custom, it was part of their 10;30 P.M. slot on either Sundays or Mondays. They had the anthology of films on either night at one time or another; featuring mostly classic of the 1930's and '40's, under the umbrella title of "When Movies Were Movies!" WEEK after week our late evening time in the parlor were rewarded by the showing of titles such as DESTINATION TOKYO, DODGE CITY, YANKEE DOODLE DANDY, JOHNNY BELINDA, 20,000 YEARS IN SING-SING, CASABLANCA, RHAPSODY IN BLUE, THE FIGHTY 69th, ANGELS WITH DIRTY FACES, SERGEANT YORK and even THE JAZZ SINGER (with Al Jolson). Clearly, the folks at this Chicago Tribune owned station lived up to the platitudes suggested by the movie series title and gave the younger generation a great familiarity with the films of their parents' generation.AS for the presentation of today's disectee, ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT, it didn't go over so well with the young 'uns in our household. Perhaps be because it wasn't a true gangster part for Bogey, but rather more of a Damon Runyon-esquire type of character; as truly was all the rest of the picture. The storyline, characterizations and the odd combination of happenings gives the whole production an overall resemblance to a Comic Book story of THE SPIRIT by the greatest creative genius in that field, Mr. Will Eisner.(1917-2005).PERHAPS it was an unavoidable occurrence that should be chalked up to youthful inexperience and green naiveté, but it was difficult to accept such a film with one of its feet firmly planted in Drama, the other decidedly on the side of Farce. This lack of being neither here nor there is sometimes difficult to understand for us young people.TIME has a way of healing all wounds and removing all the youths from their preeminent places in the world, not to be replaced by others; but rather by their own selves in "Grown-up" versions; in much the same way that Jackie Paper did to 'Puff, the Magic Dragon." Indeed, making further viewings in that mean, old, nasty state of life variously called Adulthood or Grown-upness, it is much easier to assimilate the intentionally designed dichotomy of what is the heart and very fiber of ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT.WHEN viewing it recently on home video, without all of those commercial breaks that our friends at Channel 9 were and still are shackled with; we had a great chance to make some chronologically updating reevaluation. Now, when we watched the movie, the thought occurred to us that it bears more of a resemblance to a farce of a Stage Play, rather than to any film type. We thought that for sure, it was an adaptation from stage to screen. But alas, the credits reveal no such ancestry in the movie's family tree.WHILE we're on the subject, let's not forget to mention something about Warner Brothers' Films in general.MOVIES coming from Warners' lot also always had a fine group of supporting players who functioned almost like a stock company in giving fine performances in supporting roles. It is no different in ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT, which can proudly boast of names such as: Conrad Veidt, Peter Lorre, Ed Brophy, Kaaren Verne, Jane Darwell, Frank Sully, William Demarest, Judith Anderson, Wallace Ford, Barton MacLane and Frank McHugh. Additionally, they had the fine services of a couple of Up and Coming Funny Men by name of Phil Silvers and Herbert John "Jackie" Gleason.MORE than the products of any other of the Studios in Hollywood, it was those movies that came out with their name on them that seemed to have their finger on the pulse of America. In turn the various Melodramas, Cops & Robbers, Westerns and Biopics or what have you; all served as training for all of us on just what it is to be an American. Whether the leading actor's ethnicity was Irish, German, Italian, Jewish, Polish or whatever, they all came across as 100% American. We saw proof of same hundreds of times as played out by guys with names like: Bogart, Cagney, Edward G. Robinson, John Garfield, Pat O'Brien, Paul Muni and even Errol Flynn. Why even those Warner Brothers' Productions that bore the series names of 'LOONEY TUNES" and "MERRY MELODIES" seemed to have it right! "THAT'S ALL FOLKS!"POODLE SCHNITZ!!
