J M He swindles his clients, cheats on his wife, and endangers his daughter. Uses son of one of his former clients (who is beholden to him) to get himself out of the shithole, in the process exposing him to a jail time. This guy is a total, all-weather moral bankrupt. He is also extremely foul mouthed, using the f word every time he utters a word. What a garbage....
philipfoxe What really makes this movie come to life for me is the moral ambiguity at its heart. Richard Gere's character continually justifies his sociopathic behaviour by insisting that the importance of his business deal comes before anything else. He is continually perplexed and frustrated by the seeming inability of other people to understand this. This self centred centred Assurance and the sense of entitlement it brings is at the core of the meltdown that took place in our economic system. A well observed and interesting take on our Society.
Tina Tina This is one of those vain movies a person regret watching. If you want to waste your time with a movie that will leave you with nothing to take in or even think about - then go ahead. Otherwise, skip this movie that gives a glimpse of the lifestyle of the reach people who have both wives and mistresses and do illegal actions. Those characters are not elaborate, the film lacks deeper perspective instead of the cliché that rich people get away with crime, yet they lose the respect and adulation of their love ones which is what matters. It is all so superficial that does not leave the viewer with anything to take from it. The characters are stereotypical, the plot is not elaborate and it does not tell any story of the stock market well described other than some accounting illegal actions, which are also superficially told. All in all, wateful resources to make this movie.
statuskuo I'm sure the comparison has been drawn before. But what if Edward from "Pretty Woman" had moved on in life? The fairy tale is over and work has consumed him. Not only him, but his family. Sarandon, is the aging beauty wife, dedicated to keeping their family together and her charitable work and Pilates. Similar to what Julia Roberts would've become. Last we heard, money was the central idea of how he obtained Roberts and thus would be his own downfall. This movie is gripping. Despite previous reviews of how "boring" it was. It's not. It's one of the few times where I started to identify with wealthy people and the web they get tangled in when the ability to do right is so clouded by more personal issues. And it's an amazing balance of emotions, that I was throughly impressed with. I feel the reason this was largely ignored during Oscar time, may've been an undercurrent of the financial disaster of the U.S.A. It seemed to give a pass to greed. Not that it ever excused his behavior, but it made understand that most of us see black and white. Yes, there is a right or wrong and you want Gere to do the right thing. But in the shadow of financial disaster for a lot of people, is the right thing also the wrong. This type of dynamic is SO wonderful, because it's missing in most movies these days. And refreshing to see characters (especially the talent in this movie) slowly go into their own demise. I LOVED this movie. A wonderful look into decisions we make under pressure.
