Reviews

kensai-5 It is a rare thing that I would give only a single star in an IMDb review. Unlike most people who are writing these reviews, I have an awareness of how bad movies can get. You haven't seen the "worst movie of all time" (a shallow phrase I despise), if you haven't watched many dozens of extremely low budget productions. That said, although "Atlantic Rim" is far from being one of the worst movies of all time, I still cannot undo a feeling of embarrassment for my responsibility of ever so slightly increasing its rating, which is 1.7, at the moment. A more appropriate score might be a 2.5, though. The writers, director and actors would have good reason to be ashamed of their involvement with this production. It's hard to know how much of the script was changed during production, on the whim of the producers or director. The dialog is sometimes of prepubescent quality, the events and action almost always are. Whenever the dialog was less irritating any positive effects were quickly undone by the incompetence of the director and editor(s).My suspicion is that the director, Jared Cohn, is incapable of work any better than this. I have seen examples of his writing, acting and directing now, and they have all been in the cringe category of awful. I would advise people who're going to work with him to use utmost care. If anything good is to be taken from his example, it's that you can get a job in any field, regardless of your absence of skill or talent.Watch this movie if you prefer your heroes extremely dimwitted, with the dialog to show for it. Also watch this if you prefer soldiers to do whatever they please and whenever they feel like, regardless of the commands given to them. The soldiers in this movie behave a lot like party-addicted, bullying teenagers, who are treating their commanders like spoiled, aggressive pupils might treat their teachers if they have absolutely no respect for their authority. According to the movie that behavior is absolutely fine, commanders will laud you for it and express their pride, as long as you're the best at your job.The action, dialog and special effects are never interesting or engaging, but rather cringe inducing and confusing. Let me give you one example of "bad special effects" caused by utter lack of competence, rather than lack of money. In one scene we see the biggest monster stand up while leaving the ocean next to a beach. At least that was the idea. What we actually see is the ocean and the horizon meeting up in the very very far distance, which is also the place where the ankles of the monster rise up from the ocean. Yes, the person who made the special effects for this scene placed the ankles of the monster at the farthest end of the visible ocean. If you correlate the distance of its ankles with its size on screen, the monster would have been at least several miles high. In later scenes we're shown that it's actually rather around 50-100 m (or ~150-300 feet) high, while walking through streets. Money was not a factor here. This dire mismatch of size relation is the result of giving the special effects job to a person not remotely skillful enough for the profession. The scenario described in the previous paragraph is exemplary for just about any part of the production of this movie. The people involved were fully incapable of predicting what the movie would look or feel like when finished. It also seems like they stay unaware of their mistakes and thus never learn from them.
Granger The first hint one should get is that the original title of this movie was "Atlantic Rim"-- apparently trying to grab the few viewers that might mistake it for "Pacific Rim". That they have now changed the title could be only for one of two reasons: 1) Legal troubles with the Pacific Rim people or 2) Atlantic Rim got such a bad reputation they're trying to re-release it under a different name. This is one of the few movies that I would give 3 stars on special effects alone (not great, but interesting)... except that I don't really want to raise the current 1.7 rating. So I chose to not rate it at all, because even a 2 would up the scale a little. The script, acting, logic flaws, senseless storyline... it all adds up to a "rainy Saturday afternoon when the internet is out" movie. But then, anyone who watches a giant robots vs sea monsters movie made by Asylum and expects anything but goofy really is not acquainted with this company. I gave this one a chance thinking "Hey, even Asylum can't totally ruin a giant robots vs sea monsters movie." And I was right. They didn't totally ruin it; they just mostly ruined it. It did contain giant robots and sea monsters after all.Seriously though, recognize there is a reason for that (current) 1.7 rating, and spend time on a hobby or with the family. There, I just saved you a couple of hours out of your life that may have been spent in Asylum drivel. If you're still tempted to watch this, just remember: TRUST THE 1.7... TRUST THE 1.7...
buttyfrench SPOILERS!!!! OK, I saw all of the bad reviews and said, "Hey, this must be a terrible movie without much of anything that I would like because so many other people hated it!". But, then I said, "Hey, why not watch it anyway because I know that I won't live forever and there is a chance it could be good and I will die and NOT know it was really good.". So, I decided to watch it and found out that it was well acted and had a great plot with really, really, dootedly CGI effects. The bots looked like they could walk right off your screen and into your bed with your girlfriend. Several of the actors were sweaty all of the time, I noticed, BTW! We were all like shouting that they needed to wipe off the sweat or get sudsy in an all out soapy shower scene with hot babes and milfs. It's all good anyway with out the shower scene.
sinspired Not really spoilery, but vaguely mentions things that happen. So, the other reviews are right. The direction is bad. The acting is wooden. The dialog needed work. The lighting isn't subtle. Interior SCI Fi sets don't match exteriors. Settings and scenes and plot aren't logical. The music is meh. Makeup artists were possibly non- existent. New York City mostly looks like someplace in California (or maybe Florida). But you kind of expect that. I mean, it's a knock-off, low budget, Fi-Sci interpretation of somebody else's idea. What's amazing is picking out things that they did BETTER than Hollywood. Like the headsets the guys on the oil rig are wearing. Although for movie shooting, the lady's mic should have been lower, it was a smart way for them to get along without boom mic operators AND it's something real people would need to wear. The conference between the admiral and the others after the oil rig disappears? That could really happen, and if it did, it would happen with iPads on a desk instead of stupid holographic displays. (Although who buys magenta light bulbs for their office, you must tell me!) And by putting two women in their really-way-too-big submarine interior, they passed Bechdel in the first set of scenes, without really even trying. The cast looks like a group of real people rather than modeling school rejects, and the effects were MUCH better than I had any reason to expect. Don't expect too much, look for the craft, and mentally write teleport platforms just offscreen in about half the scenes, and you should have no trouble enjoying this.
