xposipx "The most offensive, most shocking film ever!" Is the plot line given from the filmmakers. It's basically a found videotape of serial killer/rapist/thieves stealing, raping, and killing.Violence for the sake of violence. This movie ran about 82 minutes long and about 50 minutes of it were elongated rape scenes. They do a good job at making the gore look 'real' for the most part, but when there isn't a point to it....why should we care? The only interesting scene is when the man cuts off his own penis with a pair of scissors, which looks painfully real. The whole point was for the picture quality to be bad, but it's beyond bad. It was probably shot with a mid 90's VHS-C camcorder in a lot of low-light situations. You could even see the little rainbow at the top and bottom of the screen the entire time. The grain is effective, but not bearable for the entire 82 minutes. Second, the audio was way muffled obviously...I had to turn my speakers way up to be able to hear...as if there was much dialogue to hear anyways. The camera shook and moved way too much for me to understand what was going on some of the time as well....which was the whole point, but it's just not good film making. Last, there were maybe 7 edits through the entire movie, and they were just to cut off scenes that were running way too long. They were attempting to make this look like a real serial killing trio's tape of mischief. Therefore, they should try and do their best to act like real serial killers. What I saw was a few 30 year olds running around screaming curse words a lot. No one with an IQ above 10 uses the curses like they do in every sentence. All of the acting was just not at all creative, and when they were at an obvious loss for words...of course you would just hear them curse some more. The people being raped also never fought back, which was entirely unrealistic as well.Bottom Line: The point of this was to be an extreme gore/shock fest. It's similar to the Guinea Pig series in a way, but without the style or even as much gore. I satisfied my curiosity and was definitely dumbfounded on how blatantly mindless this piece of crap actually was. If these guys could maybe mix a bit of their special effect talent with some script writing or technical work they might be onto something. As for this, it's one long dragging uninspired rape scene after another. It's been done, and it's been done a lot better.
SpannersGerm669 August Underground is definitely an important film to underground horror film making. It had nothing to it, but showed that there are directors out there who are willing to go that extra step further to capture the depravities of humankind. It is everything that the word "Horror" stands for, so I thought that although August Underground wasn't my cup of tea, it understood what true horror is all about. Unfortunately with August Underground Mordum, they pushed the boundaries too far and as a result, lost the realism that the first one created. Mordum came across as a film that's sole purpose was to provoke an angry response. It was the rebellious kid at school who miss behaves because he wants the whole class to look at him. Seeking attention was something I didn't feel so much with the first one, but scenes in the sequel will have you thinking the exact same thing (that the sequel tries too hard). Now don't get me wrong. The first AU has scenes that are truly horrifying and disgusting, but never really elevated to the level of being unrealistic. It had a strange subtlety to it that made you think "this could be your next door neigbours", but AU Mordum just goes beyond that and to the point of a bad horror movie that you have seen before. Its basically a lazy film that was created off the success of the first. Nothing new, just increased the level of depravity to the point where it doesn't feel real anymore.
bp Smith Sickly-looking Goth Whites display their taste for acting out on camera in all manner of Shocking Ways (tm). From "August Underground" to "Sandman", too bad this and other examples of this 'sub-genre' are not legitimate filmmaking but rather the inevitable result of those with borderline personalities having access to video equipment. Needless to say, (or maybe not) *actual* human or animal suffering or death are never acceptable in *any* so-called film. As well, decontextualized acts of violence and silly-looking gore effects do not constitute a worthwhile experience for the end viewer. For those so inclined, watch a *real* genre film instead and learn to appreciate cinema- instead of just fake vomit and vicarious brutality.
Michael Blackpaw I feel that I need to take off my hat to this film, because it is extremely artistic, well executed, and clearly does exactly what the director would have wanted the film to be. However, as a consequence, it is not a wildly entertaining film, and it begins to lose it's iconic aggression as the film develops. There is no real plot that you need to know about with "Mordum", because the film basically hasn't got one. All the film does is it follows the lives of serial killers, who feel the need to carry out violent torture scenes to fulfill their fantasies. Since this is in fact a simulated snuff film, it does make sense that there is no plot at all. But that doesn't forgive the pathetic second half of the film. The first half or so of the film is an assault on the senses, as your ears are filled with the screams of victims, and the disturbing comments from the killers, while your eyes are forced to put up with scenes including self-castration and sexual assault. The film quality is low and grainy, which gives the film an arty touch, while the violent executions are worryingly realistic. I must admit I was quite disturbed by many of the scenes, and will stay with me for a very long time. The main problem with the film though is it's rather laughable second half. Whether it was designed to give the audience a break from the repeated face-beating they received from the first half or not, it turned from a horror into a comedy as it began trying to show that serial killers have a social life. I believe this may have been to suggest that anyone could be a serial killer, but despite that the execution didn't make it seem like that. The final execution that followed the social life element didn't make up for it either, being disappointed when compared to other scenes, which didn't lend it a hand either. While I am not a fan of the torture porn genre, I did find this film very impressive artistically. Unfortunately, the film dropped in standard just after the halfway mark, which ruined the effect the film had on me. If the film had had more of a story, or had been less silly towards the end, I may have enjoyed it enough to want to buy it on DVD from the States. But it hasn't. So I won't...
