Reviews

Creepy-Suzie I post on a horror message board, where I can discuss films with other horrorphiles, and have done so for many years. This movie stayed etched into my mind, but my criticism had been that the story was disjointed. Now for those of you that are not aware, there is as much controversy for the content as there was around the marketing. I wasn't aware when I approached the thread, but I noted others posting aggressively about this film. One individual stood out however. He patiently explained that a large portion of the film had been edited out for the sake of a rating and distribution against the director's wishes. He later divulged that he was that very director. How very humbling to criticize someone's work to them. Still, he validated my assertions and encouraged me to watch an alternate uncut version. Upon viewing the uncut version of Murder Set Pieces, I better understood the deleted portions were cut because of the sheer brutality, nudity, and violence/ gore. (The Trifecta) If you can think of a taboo topic I'm sure it was present in this film or at least implications made about it; the bathroom scene being just one of the many reasons the film ended up being banned in the UK. Two words come to mind, "grit" and "nastiness". It didn't seem it was simply the director's intention to shock, but if you are indeed shocked it implies that you have a certain amount of humanity that the world in all its atrocities lacks. It's the dirty diseased underbelly of a disposable society that proper people would much rather avoid. It's more than a social commentary though- it's morbid, erotically stimulating, and you wince at the pain inflicted as it becomes so real. This was an entirely different film from the original neutered and flaccid chopped up Lionsgate version. This uncut film has teeth and hits you like a stark smack to the face unapologetically. The effects were realistic, the kills were not implied or cut away, coloration and lighting were impressive and dialog was extended to make a lot more sense. Traditionally sinister situations and people through history were vilified to emphasize that moral depletion. Here it's not a warning as much as morning daylight shown on the face of an ugly reality.
Nitzan Havoc Oh. My. God.Blood. Gore. Violence. Brutality. Sadism. Pain. Torture. Humiliation. And of course, sex.I don't even know where to begin or how to remotely address the 90 minutes I've just gone through. The two dominating scene types in this film are naked women with big breasts being brutally raped, and naked women with big breasts getting cut/beaten/choked to death. This film has more blood in it than the entire population of America. And as if that isn't enough - the sadistic psychotic misogynistic killer is also a Nazi. I'm shocked and appalled. Mission accomplished, Palumbo, you sick twisted f***.I'll attempt a little objectivity for the sake of a well written review, but forgive me if I fail, as I have no motivation what so ever to succeed.I guess that in a way you could say this was "hipster horror" showing a very very sick way of "art", De-Sade style. I guess showing us all these terrible horrible revolting scenes of blood, rape and slaughter was maybe an innovative way of depicting the sick sadistic mind of a sick sadistic man. Many many films tried to make an audience understand the sickness of the truly sadistically insane. This film aced it, and not in a good way (is there a good way for such a thing?)I've read many complaints about plot holes - I didn't actually notice them, I actually thought the story was told in a good way, in a "by the way" kind of manner through the murders and events in the killer's everyday life.As for acting - I can't really judge based on such a film, but the female characters did scream and "suffer" in a very convincing way (except for the little girl who was very unconvincing and amateur, especially in the final 10 minutes.Everything about this movie was sick and sickening. I don't know if this fact makes this film worthy of a 10 or a 1, as I'm not sure what scale to use with such a film. Settle for a 5, as I am more shaken up now then I've ever been after a Horror film. Heck, I didn't want to watch Hostel on account the "troubling" scenes, but now? It would be like Disney. All I can say is this: if you watch this film and truly have a good time - there's something horribly wrong with you.
KBambrick Murder Set Pieces is regarded as a twisted, sick, ultra violent and sadistic movie and rightly so. The problem is the production, acting and lack of emotion make it look like the director was just trying to see how much he could get away with and forgot to include a good story line to go with it. Sure there are some genuinely disturbing scenes but all the performances seemed devoid of emotion or even interest (Tony Todd looking at you). Its hard to find any positive points to this movie. Sure it pulls no punches when it comes to graphic depiction of violence but is that really enough to satisfy a viewer (i hope not). To conclude if you feel inclined to watch a degrading, nasty movie this might be for you, however i seriously doubt you will enjoy it.
Casper Jansen *** also contains minor a spoiler to "Hostel" ***An old saying says "curiosity killed the cat". Well, I guess I was that cat, because I have never thought a film would make such an impression as "Murder-Set-Pieces" did – and I don't mean that in a positive way! Before you sit down to see Nick Palumbos gorno slasher, know this: it is a ride to Hell into the sick mind of a madman with all the graphic nudity, blood and torture you could ever imagine getting to see on film.Normally I'm not into horror films, but both "Saw" (the two first!) and "Hostel" (the first!) was big hits for me. I really loved them, especially "Hostel", which has become one of my favourite films. As many reviews have compared "Murder-Set-Pieces" with those two film series, I thought it might be worth watching. But there are many reasons why "Murder-Set-Pieces" is NOT worth watching. Opposite "Hostel", "M-S-P" is missing a plot. In Eli Roth's film, the story of an organisation selling backpackers to people who wants to kill a person was very frightening in itself, and it was much more than just blood and guts. I usually don't use words like misogyny about a film, but "M-S-P" simply floats in EXTREME hate towards women. In scene after scene they get degraded, raped and killed in the most unthinkable and sick ways. There is not plot, no storyline, no character development and the technical site is hopelessly amateurish. The film is driven by pure hatred and nothing else! You can ask yourself what has been the point of making this film? I imagine that Nick Palumbo wanted us to descent into the mind of a madman, but after watching this snuff-like film, I wonder who the real madman is, The Photographer or Nick Palumbo himself? One of the endless unbearable scenes takes place in The Photographer's death- and torture chamber in his basement. A young girl is tied to a chair. She screams and is covered in blood and panics more and more. He finds a big nail which he jams through her wrist which makes her empty her urine and faeces into a bucket below her in pure fear. Then he wraps a rope around her neck and strangulates her more and more. Finally he puts on a pair of sharp special made set of vampire teeth and then shreds her beautiful face and neck. It is those kinds of scenes "Murder-Ser-Pieces" is build up around, and it is tasteless and degrading in every thinkable way!Who should watch this film? People who have a depraved taste in film would probably like this little piece of horror fiction. So would people who grows an enormous hate towards women and want nothing else but disgusting and sickening torture of beautiful girls and children. Everyone else have to stay FAR away!!!It is everything else but a pleasant journey, and I'm glad I didn't react other ways than I did.
