Woodyanders Several teenagers find themselves trapped in a small town that's been overrun with ferocious flesh-eating zombies. The kids are going to have to fight their way out in order to survive this harrowing ordeal. Writer/director Steven C. Miller relates the gripping story at a quick pace, generates a good deal of nerve-jangling tension, ably crafts a strong mood of pure dread, stages the action and zombie attack set pieces with savage go-for-the-throat gusto, and delivers a handy helping of in-your-face brutal violence and graphic splatter. Moreover, Miller deserves extra praise for his harsh take-no-prisoners attitude (a zombie mother attacks her own son and another zombie not only tears out a pregnant woman's baby, but also eats it as well!). The earnest acting by the game no-name cast keeps the movie humming: Garrett James as the hunky Chris, Juliet Reeves as the foxy Jackie, William Howard Bowman as the tough Scott, Rowan Bousaid as the scruffy Tim, Ashley Elizabeth Pierce as the stuck-up Simone, Joe Hebner as mean bully Lance, John Youmans as a stressed-out bartender, and Larry Miller as gruff survivalist janitor Lee. Cinematographer Jeff Dolen's use of a shaky camera gives the film a jolting immediacy and galvanizing vitality. Jamey Scott's spirited shuddery score hits the heart-racing spot. Lastly, this movie possesses a genuine sincerity and raw energy that's appealing and entertaining in equal measure while the terse 75 minute running time ensures that this picture never becomes dull or overstays its welcome. A fun fright flick.
Timothy Shary This movie is so inept on so many levels, its only use is to study how cheap production values defeat all aspects of a film. The entire soundtrack-- and I mean dialogue, effects, and music-- must have been re- dubbed in a metal bathroom. (One person is credited with about 90% of the audio work.) The flat digital visuals look like they were shot on old 8mm stock with lights from a local hardware store. The attempts at blood-and-guts gore are entirely amateur. And the already flaccid script did not even merit an ending.Maybe some real zombie completists will want to see this to explore the truly worst of the genre. I wanted to see it as a teen horror film, and it offers nothing worthwhile in that regard.I enjoy recommending films that are bizarre or extreme, but this is just stupid.However... You might want to watch the "making of doc" that is included on the DVD, because it shows the sincere mania that is grassroots filmmaking. The people behind the film had delusions of grandeur, and so much more ambition than ingenuity. And again, you realize how any positive aspects of making the film-- and it looks like they did have fun making it-- are ruined by the failed production that came out.
phoebuz62 a budget of 50,000$ spent on this? i guess that all went into the fx-make-up and marketing, right? maybe they should have spent some more on a literature student to re-write the script or maybe some kind of continuity conductor. this is a good opportunity to mention clichés: on this world there is an uncountable amount of them which is, of course, natural because people have been here for such a long time. if you decide to create some kind of art (a movie, music, book, painting, sculpture, watever), you also have to decide how you want to deal with clichés unless you want to create something completely new. there are a lot of movies, even zombie flicks, that make clever use of those above mentioned clichés, but some, well, a lot actually, just don't get the distinction between a clever play on stuff that has been seen quite a few millions of times and... stuff like this. i kinda feel lost for words, just had to get these thoughts out of my head. im watching the movie right now and am glad im playing the bass right now, too... otherwise i might not make it through the movie. anyway, i hope they all die...
handfulofdice Where to begin... the whole movie has this awful jittery look to it, and it's because the filmmakers obviously to post-convert 30 fps down to 24 fps to give it a "film look." It's an epic fail. All the audio was recorded in post, because it all sounds horribly canned and out of place. Imagine a group of high school kids decided to shoot a movie one week. That's what this is. Everything about it is amateur. There's one or two good special effects, but there's no story. Just people running from zombies. One second they'll be in a jeep. Then all of a sudden they're swimming in a lake. It's mind-numbingly bad. They try to throw a stupid story at you about 70 min into it (which is right at the end since it's only 75 min long), and then it doesn't even have an ending. It just stops. One of the worst things I've ever seen.
