Trey Yancy This is a complete and BS movie that has been Hollywood-ized to death. Ike, Bradley, and everyone else of note who was involved totally rejected this movie - using such terms as "disgusting" and worse. The bozos who made this film couldn't even figure out that a key issue was the extremely harsh blizzard conditions. Viewers should not view this film as history. It is a show-biz alternate reality version made by lazy, money-grubbing Hollywood morons.
cecilefiredog Why in the world would the Germans want to capture and American fuel dump and/or why in the world would the Americans ever want to capture a German Fuel Dump? Our Tanks used Av-Gas or Aviation "Gasoline" while the Germans Tanks used only Diesel! German Tanks that run on Diesel cannot use Gasoline and American Tanks that use Gasoline cannot run on Diesel so either opponents Fuel Dumps would not be "Captured" but would be blown up and destroyed instead! Another very important point is that Diesel when ignited does not explode so bullets hitting Germans tanks did not make them explode only their ordinance exploded, while bullets that hit the American Tanks would make them Explode and destroy them completely and these American tanks were so very dangerous due to the explosive effects of gasoline that was used that the soldiers could not smoke inside or near the American Tanks while smoking was OK in or on all German tanks. General George S. Patton himself actually sanctioned the use of Radial Air-Cooled Gasoline engines knowing full well the explosive problems! Our American Tanks were death-traps on tracks while the German Tanks were very safe using their "not" Explosive Diesel Fuel! This killed the movie for me like the Gasoline tanks did to a lot of Courageous American soldiers
jlthornb51 If the title means this is the story of the actual Battle of the Bulge, the horrendous offensive Hitler attempted in the west in 1944, then it is entirely in error. Just wrong and wrong in a manner that is an insult to the veterans of that bloody battle and to history itself. President Eisenhower described this ridiculously filmed garbage as obscene upon seeing it upon first release. It is certainly blasphemy. Not only is it totally and completely inaccurate in just about every way possible, it is poorly made. The special effects are simply terrible, below the standards of a Japanese Godzilla movie. The cinematography is awful, the locations ludicrous, and the acting wooden, if how the stars play their parts can even be described as anything close to acting. The worst aspect of this production is the script which seems to have been written by hacks who knew nothing of the Second World War in Europe except the Germans and Americans were somehow involved in a big battle before the final surrender. They must have read part of the newspaper headline back in December of 1944, not bothering with any details. This is trash. And not trash that is in some perverted way entertaining, humorous, or fun. This film stands as a towering monument of shame, a tribute to the stunning arrogance and incredible ignorance, the ugly insensitivity and utter indifference of Hollywood. The shocking moral bankruptcy of the producers, director, and screen writers is forever recorded here, in a horrendous film that reflects their collective contempt for the American heroes who turned back the fascist hordes that made one huge blunder in attempting to reassert Nazi evil in Western Europe. Thank goodness for motion pictures such as Battleground and television productions like Band of Brothers, made by people who cared about the dignity of the surviving participants who sacrificed so much for our freedom and honor them and history. There is little to be said regarding "Battle of the Bulge" other than this unholy film is a total abomination with no redeeming qualities whatsoever.
David Conrad Though often and rightly criticized for historical inaccuracy, the plot of this war epic is nevertheless coherent and engaging without succumbing to simplicity. The landscapes, from snowy forests to desert dunes, are beautifully-filmed. The sets—especially the town of Ambleve, which I was surprised to learn was constructed—are convincing. The characters, whether German or American, officer or enlisted man, all pop without straying too often or too completely into war movie archetypes. Telly Savalas and Robert Shaw are particularly effective at conveying a range of motivations and emotions. At its release this was perhaps the best WWII movie since "The Longest Day" (1962), also directed by Ken Annakin.
