Red-Barracuda This film came to semi prominence in early 80's Britain when it was labelled a video nasty under the evocative sounding title Forest of Fear. The moniker I saw it under was 'Toxic Zombies' which really doesn't make an awful lot of sense. But no matter because it doesn't really make a difference what title this movie has, it's not going to improve it any. Its story is about a group of marijuana farmers who are sprayed with a toxic chemical by renegade federal agents. They turn into homicidal maniacs and terrorise various people in a forest.Sadly, despite being an honest enough effort, this is a pretty boring movie. It's amateurish in every conceivable way. Its video nasty credentials are somewhat questionable too. It's one of many films from the notorious list that have no right being in any grouping of films that were considered a threat to society. The very idea of someone sitting through this and then being either traumatised or inspired to commit acts of violence is patently an insane one. The only thing anyone is in danger of is in falling asleep to be perfectly honest. Acting is universally amateur despite the presence of John Amplas who was so impressive in George Romero's excellent film Martin. While the music is a very poor man's Halloween score. The only thing truly of note has nothing to do with the actual film and that is the fact that the director Charles McCrann was one of the poor unfortunates who perished in the World Trade Center attacks back in 2001.
Coventry Randomly stupid WTF moment #1: girl stands topless in the middle of the woods, washing herself, and gets shot a hole in the neck by a duo that appears to be couple of redneck hunters but actually turn out special service agents."Forest of Fear" is a Video Nasty in the purest meaning of the term. In other words, it's a crude and gratuitously violent shocker with an incredibly far-fetched premise, tasteless undertones and copious amounts of randomly absurd moments.Randomly stupid WTF moment #2: frustrated housewife starts complaining about her drunken and useless husband to a complete stranger when she picks up the phone. The incredibly incompetent authorities are searcher for a posse of hippie youngsters that build themselves a hidden camp in the forest to grow crops of illegal drugs. Suddenly an airplane spraying insecticides flies over and, in combination with their heavy consumption of soft drugs, the hippies turn into ravenous zombies! They take over the forest in no time and begin to extend their quest for human flesh to the camp sites surrounding the woods.Randomly stupid WTF moment #3: guy quotes completely irrelevant line from the Humphrey Bogart classic "The Treasure of Sierra Madre".Of all the once-infamous Video Nasties, "Forest of Fear" is definitely one of the most difficult ones to track down, despite being released under no less than three separate alternate titles and censored versions (the other two being "Toxic Zombies" and "Bloodeaters"). Maybe that's not too hard to understand, since you really have to be a very tolerant horror lunatic in order to enjoy this trashy piece of nonsense.Randomly stupid WTF moment #4: guy confronted with zombie assailants spontaneously runs off in the woods and leaves behind his wife; two seconds after giving her a speech about how adventurous he is… The gore is vile and sick-spirited but the effects are cheap, cheesy and probably couldn't even upset a 95-year-old grandmother suffering from palpitations of the heart. This stuff is nevertheless a lot of fun to watch when you're in front of the telly late at night with friends and a fridge that is full of beer. In that setting and ambiance, I even advise to play the randomly stupid WTF moment game! Randomly stupid WTF moment #5: secretary girl, clearly the type that closely watches the number of calories she consumes per day, has a greasy hamburger sandwich for lunch whilst typing out a report. Sexy!Writer/director Charles McCrann desperately attempts to generate suspense through rudimentary tricks, like ominous music and hectic POV shots, but it's all useless. "Forest of Fear" can only excel through its hilariously incompetent dialogs and spontaneous outbursts of splatter gore. Although I will give it one point extra for the downbeat twist in the end. This was Charles McCrann's one and only moment of cinematic horror glory, apparently, and according to the biography here on the website he was one of the people who died in the World Trade Center towers during the terrorist attacks on 9/11. Randomly stupid WTF moment #6 (save the best for last): imbecilic guy rudely starts pulling retard-faces at a mentally handicapped boy before telling racist jokes to his teenage sister. And this at a time when these kids have been separated from their parents since the day before and probably feel worried to death. Oh, how I love 80's horror!
Dan Forest Of Fear is a terrible film, I have seen it and I still feel sorry for doing that. It's can easily be a part of the worst movies of all times in my opinion. Forest Of Fear is a very low budget film, not that it bothers me, I love low budget/no budget movies, but Forest Of Fear is just awful beyond words. The zombies are pathetic as hell, the characters' dialogue bores so much that you feel like breaking your TV our of anger. The effects are lame, and everything else is just so bad that you want to burn the video shop that has given you the film. I can only recommend this film to people who truly hate themselves or just people that should be executed just for liking horrible movies like forest of fear. If you can find this rare and horrible film, just BURN it. Only by burning it, won't innocent people suffer as much as I have.
Krug Stillo Talk about a one-man vision! This film maybe very low budget with little to recommend it any department, but when taken into consideration that is was written, produced, edited, directed and starred the same chap, McCrann, the film becomes quite impressive. Chuck Austin McCrann was presumed dead on September 11th, but for us horror film fanatics who knew nothing of the man we have this cheap little zombie flick, known as Bloodeaters in the States to remember him by.Filmed in the ‘ZOMBIE CAPITOL OF THE WORLD', Pittsburgh, this film also has regular Romero crewmember, John ‘Martin' Amplas as a double-dealing FBI agent. He and his colleague decide to dump their new herbicide, ‘DROMAX' on a cannabis crop, similar in theme to Return of the Living Dead. The dust settles on the harvesting hippies too. Soon these poor fellas are running around the country searching for different kind of munchies. The rest of Forest of Fear involves McCrann, his wife and brother frequently running from place to place escaping the carnivorous hippies; a mentally challenged kid and his older sister trying to find their parents who were previously killed by the ‘zombies'; a touch of comic relief between an unemployed alcoholic and his mouthy wife. There is the occasional scene of violence too, albeit not too graphic. This isn't a great movie by any standards. The special effects, acting and cinematography all scream the word ‘cheap' in unison. But there is something in particular with the one-man vision, Pittsburgh country setting, John Amplas and its inclusion on the ‘Video Nasties' list, which make Forest of Fear rewatchable
