bowmanblue Sometimes you watch a film which doesn't really know what it is. You'll find the odd drama which sways heavily into comedy and then back again, leaving the viewers wondering what they're actually watching.'Botched' is indeed a 'multi-genre' film, however, it's dabblings in various genres does appear intentional. And, better still, it works. When I first heard about 'Botched' I thought it was about a bank robbery that goes wrong. The reason being that that's how it's billed. The promotional material doesn't really go on much from saying how a trio of thieves try to pull off a heist in Russia (with disastrous consequences). That makes it sound like a simple heist movie (or crime caper). However, what you may or may not know is that what transpires into everything from a slasher film to a madcap, tongue-in-cheek farce. The trio of bank robbers do indeed get more than they bargained for, but not from the authorities. The hostages they attempt to capture have more than a few skeletons in their closets, but even they pale in comparison to who's waiting for them on an abandoned floor of the building they're trying to escape from with the loot. It's hard to say who this film will appeal to, as it crosses so many genres. But, if you're generally into heads being severed and bodies being hung up and sliced at the waist (while at the same time trying not to laugh at the cheesiness of it all) you should be pleasantly surprised.Special mention to Geoff Bell who steals ever scene in his 'alpha male' persona.
GL84 Attempting to steal a valuable treasure, a group of thieves and their hostages find the building controlled by a psychotic killer and his sister who kill intruders in the area and try to get away with their stolen goods before they're all killed.A pretty strange horror-comedy, mostly in the fact that like so many of these kinds of films, the horror angle here is awesome yet the comedy aspect fails lamely, due to the common factors of either the joke not being funny or being weird doesn't make it funny. Scenes like the killer rolling around the corridors on roller skates to disco music playing on the speakers as a victim remains stuck through a trap in the area, using ballet moves to chase after a fleeing victim or arguing with the inside man about the job he's doing are just some of the different ways in which that's obvious, but as mentioned, the horror angle here is awesome with outrageously bloody kills, a mostly-imposing killer and some pretty neat twists later on. It's a lot better than it sounds, but it's still got some problems even though it's pretty watchable.Rated R: Graphic Violence and Graphic Language.
lemon_magic Well, I'd give this a 6 out of 10, but it's a "strong" 6. Combining horror, gore, and humor is a tricky business, and what works for one person might not work for another, depending on your taste for this sort of thing. I also think that since this was an Irish/Russian/French collaboration that a lot of what might work for that set of sensibilities (stereotypes, cultural tropes, plays on language, etc.) might not work so well for an American audience, unless that American audience wasn't too set in its own ideas about what's funny).I thought some of the setups were pretty effective here, and a few of the visual jokes paid off well. The dialog had a hit-or-miss quality that reminded me of other low budget/amateur efforts that showcased some real talent that could have benefited from a dialog coach. Visually, the movie works pretty well and the plot is original enough in a 2nd rate way to have some novelty value. Some of the performances are pretty good: Dorff is on cruise control here, but he's enough of a pro to make his role work, the female lead has some nice moments and some camera appeal, and the lead thug is pretty funny in an overplayed way.On the other hand, some of the supporting cast sucks on toast...but they may have played it this way on purpose, I can't tell. Not as squirmingly funny as "Evil Dead II", not as much heart or warmth as "Shaun Of The Dead", but it works fairly well for what it is. I don't know if I'll ever care to watch "Botched" again, but I enjoyed it once, anyway.
ZeroSwede I was at my friends place when he told me that a person he knows had recommended this movie to him and that we were to watch it. I asked him what movie it was and he told me its called Botched but knew nothing else about it,he had been told not to look up any info about the movie just watch it. So we watched it and i thought it was hilarious. My guess is when looking at the movies rating that this was not the way most people went in to this movie blind so to speak. You will first get the sense of a regular crime movie which escalates into a insane, hilarious and unpredictable film which was for me a movie that would not be easy to just forget about :D . I can imagine if i would have looked up the film online and read about it first or watched a review i would not have enjoyed it as much.I wonder why one does not view movies this way every time completely blind. But for some reason one always have to read or hear a opinion about the film before deciding to watch it.This time when i watched it blind it was one of the greatest movie experiences i ever had.
